Can be used with any camcorder that has an HDMI output! The two hot shoe mounts work on DSLR cameras and some camcorders. By using a clamp assembly on my tripod as a mount, I adapted this field monitor. You need to order a clamp assembly with a 1/4" 20 thread (several available here at B&H - listed in accessories with this review) and a HDMI cable that fits your camcorder's HDMI output.

My SONY HDR-HC9 camcorder outputs via a standard HDMI type output to the standard HDMI type input on the monitor. My camcorder does Peaking in RED, YELLOW, or WHITE. On this monitor, I get any of the three signals, but the monitor displays RED only. All other features of the monitor work with my camcorder.

This monitor's 5" screen is crystal clear with good resolution and displays a much better image to gauge precise focus. My camcorder's 3" LCD and viewfinder never let me reliably see the focus control I have with this field monitor.

The 16:9 display mode brings in the frame edges (narrow black box around image) so I know exactly what will be recorded within the frame.

All panning and tilting are displayed without any lag or delay. Once framed and in record mode, I'm now shooting almost exclusively by watching this monitor.

The battery lasts a long time when fully charged. Have not gone beyond 4 hours to see how long it will last.

The only limitation is outdoor, bright light makes the image on the reflective surface of the monitor a little hard to see, at times. The included fold-up monitor hood helps. In bright mid-day light I use a black out cloth over the monitor and my head for fine detail focus work.

A great addition for field shooting and for review of shot footage.

I purchased this monitor to use it with my Canon 5d Mk II. The resolution and creative design are fantastic for the price. The features are nice .... but they forgot the most important feature in my opinion!

Here's my only issue: when the 5d starts recording the image shrinks to basically the same size screen as what is on the 5d! This is a well known problem and Marshall and SmallHD both have products out to correct this issue (the screen adjusts and stays full size). Isn't this monitor selling because of the popularity of the Canon 5d? Therefore, I am extremely disappointed in Sony for not adding this feature and considering selling it because how can I attempt to pull focus when it shrinks? Defeats the whole point in my opinion. Too bad, because I was about to rave about this screen! -

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

Would have been nice for Sony to supply a battery to make this unit work - a big minus to Sony for that. My review: No Sync with Canon G16 although you can view photos taken with the camera on the Sony CLM-V55 (the viewer), but the screen does not appear to work otherwise with this camera. On the Canon 5D MkIII the Sony viewer does work in a similar fashion to the Canon G16, however, when switched to Live View mode (on the Canon 5D MkIII) the Sony unit will allow you to take movie and still pictures as desired, but once Live View is switched off the sync between the Sony unit and the camera is broken. When using the Sony viewer on the Sony RX1, the Sony viewer works as it should, syncing immediately with the camera and ready to use. However, when the camera and unit are both on, only the screen on the Sony viewer functions, whereas if the Sony viewer is switched off the camera's lcd screen kicks in again. My only gripe here is that in order to use the unit with this camera you will have to get an HDMI micro adapter to convert the supplied Sony cord, which is a regular HDMI to HDMI mini. The same applies when you want to use the Sony viewer with the Sony RX100II camera – needs a micro adapter. With the Sony RX100 II the Sony viewer works the same as it does on the Sony RX1, however the screw-on-wheel for the hot-shoe adapter obstructs the Sony's RX100II's flash unit from popping out properly, so to get the benefit of using that camera's flash unit you would have to use the Sony viewer away from the hot-shoe on this camera. Further, the shutter button on this camera would be quite difficult to press down for a person with a largish index finger to use this camera as the screw-on- wheel for the hot-shoe adapter tends to nearly overhang the shutter release button. Finally, the viewer when used with the Sony RX100II is really top heavy because the camera is so small, therefore making it quite cumbersome to use the viewer and camera together - I wouldn't be using it outdoors unless absolutely necessary – it's just too clunky. Overall, the Sony CLM-V55 viewer is ok for viewing indoors (like night time in bed viewing the day's picture take). As a tool for everyday use on any of the cameras I have mentioned, I would be hard pressed to find a use for it when taking pictures. However, on a tripod and taking macro shots of still life objects it would be ideal. Glen.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

I had a problem with the image-size too, using my Canon T4i, and was very disappointed with the monitor for that reason...until today! I messed around with the "info" button on the camera and discovered that by pressing the button a couple of times you can increase the image size on the monitor significantly. This must be some kind of problem with the interface with the camera.
Anyway, I'm happy now, but it took me a couple of years to discover this little glitch!
The only other thing I'm having trouble with is audio monitoring. It's fine in playback, but so far I haven't been able to monitor sound while I'm recording, which was one of the things I got it for. But overall it's well-made, and now that I've figured out the image-size thing (the image still doesn't completely fill the monitor screen but it's significantly bigger than the camera LCD image) I'm more or less happy with it. I wish I could figure out how to monitor sound through it, but I can do it another way (directly from my voice-recorder).
So in summary I think this is a decent unit but it has a few "issues". I haven't compared it to any other similar devices so cannot say if it's better or worse than similar products.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

The CLM-V55 5" clip-on monitor has some shortcomings; Many reviews on B&H and Sony establish on Canon and Nikon models that the screen size suddenly drops to the camera's native LCD screen size-- making it less than useful for full screen focus. I was concerned enough about screen display during recording to write Sony asking for clarification. Sony's reply:===Loren Miller,Thank you for contacting Sony Support.I understand that you want to know if the CLMV55 Portable Monitor would have a display on its entire screen during recording. The Portable Monitor will display the scene in full screen while you are recording. But during playback, black stripes may appear above and below or on each side of the monitor because of the monitors aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of the LCD panel of this monitor is 15:9 while the camera is 3:2 or 16:9 (depends on where it is set to).===Consequently, I purchased the unit at US $398 from B&H. New York. Shipping was free and prompt as usual. After driving it for a while, I can say without question, Sony's claim to full screen during Record is utterly false. Be aware of this. The live display attached to my Sony Alpha A57 is consistently less than full screen, whether in Standby or Record. The A57 camera screen shows 1080i or 1080p at 2.4375" wide. The Sony clip-on 5" shows it at 3.1875" amid a black field-- only a small improvement, and not what folks pay $[$].00 for, especially for an XVGA monitor as opposed to true HD.Sony's note about playback display is entirely accurate-- but not the topic I asked about. It feels like obfuscation. Here's the reason I'm keeping it-- it's got a "Qx1" pixel-to-pixel mapping function which *does* fill the 5" screen while recording, at about a 2X magnified view (unfortunately not adjustable back to full-frame), and also offers monochrome focus peaking. Neither feature affects recording image, of course.Audio monitoring, which largely drove this purchase, because my A57, and AFAIK all Alpha models except the A99, do not have a headphone jack. Using an inexpensive Sony headset plugged into the unit, monitoring is very good. It's what faciliates a good inexpensive DSLT camera into a compact semi-pro interview machine. The color appears a bit off-- I can't seem to match it to the camera LCD with the few basic color controls and balance settings available. Properly white-balanced reds on the camera LCD are accurate. On the 5" clip-on, they are more orange- and stay that way. It may be an early HDMI issue. Anyone needing supercritical color rendering on this during Record should look elsewhere.Unit runs off the same type of unsupplied Infolithium M battery as the camera, and I believe the unsupplied AC adapter is the same as the camera's, but I haven't tested it yet. For the price, one or both should have been supplied. The monitor is not powered in any way through the hot shoe, which would be very useful in studio work to avoid monitor battery changes and excess power cords. The monitor is supplied with a nice, short mini-to-standard HDMI cable, a nice detachable lens hood, and two solid swivel stems; one fits the proprietary Minolta/Sony autolock only recently discontinued in Alpha models; the other is a standard ISO 510 accessory shoe stem. Both work well.Shop carefully for your needs.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

I needed this for video work as well as stills. Based on other reviews of this monitor here and at Sony's website, which B&H directed me to, I wrote in to Sony for clarification. The main issue was whether or not the CLM-V55 monitor provides full screen display during Record-- on Sony's own Alpha series DSLT camera, in my case the SLT-A57, a fine model. Most of us view this as a reasonable expectation, considering the price and size. Here is Sony's reply:---Loren Miller,Thank you for contacting Sony Support.I understand that you want to know if the CLMV55 Portable Monitor would have a display on its entire screen during recording. The Portable Monitor will display the scene in full screen while you are recording. But during playback, black stripes may appear above and below or on each side of the monitor because of the monitors aspect ratio. The aspect ratio of the LCD panel of this monitor is 15:9 while the camera is 3:2 or 16:9 (depends on where it is set to).Thank you for choosing Sony.---The facts:1) Sony's comment on Record display is completely inaccurate. The camera displays a shrunken 1080 image on its XVGA screen (800 X 480) live while recording, which echoes complaints by others using it with Canon and Nikon. It's a little larger than the camera LCD display but far short of full width. The A57 camera LCD screen shows 1080 at 2.4375" wide. The Sony CLMV55 5" shows it at 3.1875" wide amid a black field.2) Sony's comment on Playback display is accurate.Pro's-Here's the reason I'm keeping it-- it's got a "Qx1" pixel-to-pixel mapping function which *does* fill the 5" screen live while recording, at about a 2X magnified view. This is not adjustable, but makes critical focusing far easier. Also offers monochrome focus peaking in case you've turned off the camera's own peaking function. Neither feature affects recorded image, of course.Playback display is sharp and clear, with limited color-tweaking with basic controls: hue, contrast, brightness.Audio monitoring through an inexpensive Sony headset I have here is very good (and a needed addition, as many Alpha SLT models do not for some odd reason have an Audio Out jack). My test utilizing a Sennheiser G2 wireless lavalier system revealed it can be set to optimal (-30DB) sensitivity for good interview work-- because you can hear what's needed and whether or not the camera's Auto Gain Control is flooding the track-- as it turns out, it's pretty mild.Speaker adequate for rough and ready listening. Both autolock accessory shoe and ordinary non-Minolta type shoe stands are provided-- thoughtful.Runs off the same type Infolithium M battery as the camera, even an older camera style M series-- such as the one I use for my tape-based HVR-A1U. Adds about a pound and a quarter total with battery.I believe the monitor's AC adapter port is the same as the A57's-- not yet tested. Cons -The COLOR appears off, regardless of camera colorspace I choose, Adobe RGB or sRGB-- I can't seem to match it to the LCD, which displays accurate reds. On the monitor-- they're orange. And they stay orange. And since the HDMI output cuts off the internal monitor, I cannot judge color live. That's NOT great for a small $[$].00 monitor, and if color is supercritical to you, look elsewhere-- unless a firmware upgrade addressing the HDMI output comes along? Sony? Hello? The autolock accessory shoe carries no data or power to the monitor. When the A57 is in "studio mode" I should be able to power both it, and any attached autolock accessory, through my camera AC adapter. Instead, I have to add battery weight. Very shortsighted.Audio: while not directly affecting the monitor, it would be incredibly useful to all Alpha SLT owners if Sony sent us a firmware upgrade with an option to DISABLE AGC and Dolby circuits, provide live AUDIO METERS on both internal and the big monitor, and a rudimentary way to control audio gain! I mean, really, Sony-- it's a Sony!

I am a semi-professional photographer and videographer for the Oil and Gas industry. We often shoot video on DSLR like the Canon 5D mark III. One item that I really missed on the 5D over the 60D was the ability to rotate out the LCD screen. This monitor solves that problem. It is versatile, and the image is very clear. You can rotate it as needed. We also shoot on Sony FS100/FS700 and it is very useful when attaching these cameras to Jib cranes. It gives accurate color representation of what you are capturing. It is super versatile, especially with the built-in sun shade. The only negative is that sometimes it takes a long time to synch with a camera. So don't expect it to be instant on.

I have a Panasonic AG-HMC 40 and a Nikon D5100 that I use for both work and pleasure. Both of the screens on these cameras were way to small, so I purchased this 5" CLM-V55. It is just what I needed...easy to set up with a built in sun/antiglare hood. The only two issues I had was the attachment bolt was too long so the screen was wobbly but I sanded down the bolt and it works fine. Also I need to buy a 18" HDMI cable for the Panasonic!

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

This monitor came just as expected and was very well built and the screen is amazing. The only downside to this thing is when using a DSLR, the resolution is brought down quite a bit upon pressing record.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

I purchased this monitor after the built in LCD on my a580 stopped working. Generally, I use in the same way I used to use the built in LCD on my camera (for image review, focusing in magnified live view, and video recording).
I like the mounting system a lot - the LCD can be mounted on a tripod, or onto the hotshoe of any camera with a provided adapter. Sony provides an adapter for both the standard hotshoe and the locking hotshoe found on Sony/Minolta bodies.
Handling is generally good, although the camera with a small lens can feel unbalanced when handheld with the monitor mounted.
Peaking was a bit of a let down. It requires high contrast edges to work well. Sometimes, nothing on the subject is rendered as 'peak'. You can turn up the monitor contrast (which affects peaking), but then peaking gives an overly optimistic prediction of what's in focus.
One problem with image review is that the camera sends 1920x1080 output to the screen, which only has WVGA resolution (800x480). Getting to the pixel level to check focus requires either additional magnification on the camera end (so that the 1920x1080 output from the camera goes beyond 1:1), or selecting the 1:1 option on the monitor.
The monitor does its job in letting me get more life out of my current camera, but I sometimes I feel like I'm not getting too much extra out of it. Most of the time, the central 4:3 portion of the screen is used, and when that happens, I'm not getting any extra resolution.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

Superb HDMI monitor solution for those looking to monitor their video recordings. It is very good for monitoring focus for those cameras that allow manual focusing. The peaking and 1 to 1 pixel checking is ideal for those shooting HD video and want to confirm focus for sharpness.
The only negatives are: Sony doesn't include a battery- so one must be purchased- be aware of that upon purchasing. The other small negative is that the monitor does take about 5 seconds of pressing the power button for the unit to turn on.....it's a bit bothersome but nothing too major- would have been nice to have an instant on button or a quick single depress and get the monitor powered......other than that the unit is perfect. Small other minor point is that the HDMI port is on one side so you may need to route the cable all the way around to reach your particular camera or setup.....would have been nice of Sony added a HDMI port on either side for easy cable routing.

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

Comments about Sony CLM-V55 Portable Monitor:

I use it as a viewfinder when capturing video on a DSLR (D7000).

The peaking function is pretty good. It only highlight the lines that are very in focus (instead of also highlighting the "almost" in focus area). Included hood is handle - easy to deploy; easy to collapse. Even small battery last a long time.

The screen is very reflective in bright sunlight. You will only see the reflection of your face on the screen than the actual content unless you also shade your face with the hood. There is no function to help adjusting the exposure (zebra, false colour). It cannot flip the image up side down if you want to mount the monitor that way.
