The Sound Blimp for the Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera from AquaTech is one of the most useful accessories a photographer can purchase. When shooting in "quiet" venues such as courtrooms, sound stages, or theaters, this tool can help you get shots that would ordinarily not be obtainable. If where you are is a "No Noise" photographic setting - buy a blimp. And, for the outdoor photographer who wants dynamic shots of undisturbed wildlife, a blimp is the way to go.

Made from a durable polyurethane material and complemented by stainless steel controls as well as hard-anodized aluminum and high-strength plastic, a sound blimp will also gain you the respect of the people you're working with since they will appreciate how you've gone the extra mile to be silent in their domain.

Using a blimp is easy. You're camera fits inside the sound proof housing and is connected to an optional lens port that accommodates the focal length of the particular lens you're using. The unit also features a built-in 1/4-20 and 3/8 tripod mount, quick-release clip with safety latch and a two-stage shutter release.

Note! The Aquatech sound blimp is not to be used in the water; requires lens port

Sound blimps have been shown to decrease camera shutter noise by more than 90%
The housing itself is sound proof due to the sound dampening foam used in the construction
Features a tripod mount - both 3/8 and 1/4-20 threads
Works in conjunction with an interchangeable lens port system

Comments about AquaTech 1041 Sound Blimp for the Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera:

I was disappointed in this product and returned it. Reasons... A recording sound test showed my old Jacobsen sound blimp (that needs refoaming) to be quieter. The latch was not aligned evenly making it hard to open and close (and noisy). The internal foam kept sticking to my lens leaving glue marks and seemed very fragile in it's attachment. Hard to get camera body in and out. I give it one star because the outside body and handles feels nice.

Comments about AquaTech 1041 Sound Blimp for the Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera:

I previously reviewed this sound blimp without the lens tubes... recently I got hold of the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lens tubes and used these on a film set. The result was that I could shoot freely for once, not having to be concerned about the sound guys revving me for shooting while filming was going on. The sound blimp system does a great job eliminating noise from my Canon 5D mkII. I can also use my 7D in the housing as well.

The lens tubes are a tight fit for my lenses, but this also ensures that you can use the zoom function of the lens. You quickly get used to shooting with the blimp and although it does add a bit of hand-holding weight is doesn't feel overly cumbersome. I'd say that the blimp cuts out 80-90% of camera noise.

Comments about AquaTech 1041 Sound Blimp for the Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera:

I recently bought one of these blimps for stills photography on a film set. At this stage I only have the blimp housing to review, and am still waiting on the arrival of the 24-70mm & 70-200mm lens tubes. To those who are curious about whether the lens tubes (sold separately) are really necessary, I'd say that they are essential. While the noise from the back of the camera is reduced significantly, the remaining noise coming straight out of the lens port is still too high for me to be able to use it on set.

While the hard plastic shell of the blimp does look durable and well made, the foam around the lens area does appear that it may degrade quickly, especially since you have to take the camera and lens out of the blimp when changing lenses. The 70-200mm lens is an especially tight fit.

It's surprising that for all the expense of the unit, there is no manual included with the blimp... only a sheet of paper describing how to set the back control button for focusing.

The two-stage shutter button does work ok (the button on the blimp acts as a remote shutter, with a cable going into the side of the camera). The image play button, scroll wheel and exposure lock (*) button are the other available functions.

I found I was also able to use my Canon 7D in this housing, although you have to play around with the foam insert so that it doesn't obscure the LCD screen.

Will review the blimp again, once tested with the lens tubes.
