Product Highlights
  • Fits Wide to Short-Telephoto Lenses
  • Gearless Design for Fast Lens Changes
  • Dedicated Camera Base Plate
  • Sliding Focusing Plate
  • Easy Removal & Adjustment
  • Compatible with Zacuto Z-Finder

The SYSTEM ZERO Standard Gearless Follow Focus for Canon 5D MkII is an affordable and versatile follow-focus system designed to lend cinema-like focus control to your DSLR videos. The system's gearless design means that, unlike most other DSLR follow-focus units, this one doesn't require the purchase of dedicated gears to match each lens you use. An adjustable focus wheel attaches to one of four dovetail slots on the sliding focusing plate, which in turn mounts to the dedicated base plate beneath the camera.

The base plate, designed expressly for the Canon 5D MkII, can use any standard quick-release assembly for mounting onto a rig or tripod. It also accommodates iDC's adapted Hoodman loupe or a Zacuto Z-Finder, if you need to use a larger viewfinder for even more precise focus. When not in use, the focusing wheel can be slid away from the lens and locked in place, or the combined baseplate/focusing plate/wheel can be removed as one piece (using an allen wrench) for easy switching between video and stills shooting.

This Standard version works with most wide to short-telephoto lenses (see Compatibility spec). For larger, mid-range telephoto lenses, the XL1 kit--with its longer focusing plate--is required.

Completely gearless follow-focus is designed for accurate and smooth focus acquisition.
Accepts multiple LCD loupes including the iDC quick-release adapted Hoodman HoodLoupe 3.0, the Zacuto Z-Finder Pro, LCDVF, and other direct-to-LCD mount-style viewfinders.
The SYSTEM ZERO Camera Plate accepts the Zacuto Z-Finder Pro (not included) when the Z-Finder is equipped with a Zacuto Mounting Frame (not included). The iDC Camera Plate replaces the Zacuto Gorilla Plate in this instance.
Four dovetail slots on the focusing plate provide focus wheel positioning for a wide variety of lenses from wide to short tele-photo.
The sliding focusing plate design allows quick micro-adjustments of the focusing plate for lenses that fall in between the four provided slots.
The slots' dovetail feature captures the wheel assembly for easy fitment.
Focusing wheel accepts white graphic tape for making pre-focus marks.
The focusing wheel port accepts industry standard Arri-style follow-focus whips and cranks.
The system's included O-Ring is user replaceable.
Optional spacer elevates the camera for better access to the thumbscrew while using tripod and monopod adapter plates. It also helps the balance when nose-heavy camera and lens combinations are used. Spacer offers 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting holes for adapter plates.
Machined from high quality, aircraft-grade aluminum and finished with soft edges for sleek looks and handheld comfort.
Each camera-specific camera plate offers pin registration for accurate fitment.
SYSTEM ZERO is designed to be modularly compatible with iDC's SYSTEM ONE products. It can also be mounted to any shoulder rig that attaches by way of a 1/4"-20 fastener, or mounted to any adapter plate by way of either a 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 fastener.
Compatible with the iDC quick-release U-Boat with or without the SYSTEM ZERO spacer.
Differences in the build of each dedicated camera plate allow for the correct use of the product. Therefore a camera-specific plate is the only additional part needed to mount different camera bodies to the iDC SYSTEM ZERO Follow-Focus Kit.
Lens Compatibility Compatible with a wide variety of lenses with focus rings approximately 0.625" (1.588 cm) to 3.5" (8.9 cm) from the camera lens mount

Comments about iDC Photo Video SYSTEM ZERO Standard Gearless Follow Focus for Canon 5D MkII:

I have been a professional still photographer for 25 years. Like many of you I have been evolving into shooting hd video with my canon 5d MK 2. After careful research and a few testimonials from other IDC users I decided on the system zero follow focus. I only had a day to become familiar with its workings and feel but it is so smooth and simple that it is idiot proof. My focus was a sharp as a tack and as smooth as 20 year old scotch. This product smacks of craftsmanship and precision. A couple of colleagues have already purchased the same IDC follow focus that I have after seeing it on my rig. I can't recommend it highly enough. Buy this and you will instantly be rewarded with improved ergonomics and buttery smooth pulls.

Comments about iDC Photo Video SYSTEM ZERO Standard Gearless Follow Focus for Canon 5D MkII:

Pros: I use this with my short lenses with my camera mounted on a monopod for video. It works great and a traditional FF would not be desirable in this situation.

Cons: However...it's not very user friendly. It won't work with longer lenses so you need to buy an adapter and changing this follow focus is a real pain because there are so many parts involved. Not only do you have the plate that the FF attaches to but you have the plate that the camera body attaches to. Both of these have slotted screws that are easy to misplace and drop. Then you have the screw that holds the FF onto its plate. It's all very messy. It you're only shooting with short lenses than you'll be fine, but the way I usually shoot I'm changing out lenses constantly and going from monopod to tripod to my handheld rig so for most of my shooting this system will have to stay in my bag.

One solution might be to use a quick release plate or even two plates, one between the camera and the unit and the other on the bottom of the unit so you can snap off the camera w/o the FF and with the FF depending on your needs. I'm sure it would work under the FF unit but I'm not sure if it would work between the camera and the FF.

Noting focus marks is a pain since you have to tape up the FF and what's more the width of the unit where you would put the tape is too narrow for most tape you'll have in your bag. It would be great if they had an erasable ring.

Overall, however, I'm very happy with this product. I just wish it were easier to use.

I've tried several follow focus for the 5D, they are all around a thousand dollars and the rings, the settings, the precision is awkward. The system zero works perfectly, there's no friction, and you'll need a minute to change a lens. The system is light and the quality is great. The kit comes with everything you'll need even some spare screws, etc. It's a perfect alternative product and better than a 1000 dollars follow focus.
