The B800fs Drobo 8-Bay Network File Sharing Storage from Data Robotics is an exceptional network storage device for securing your data. In total, this Drobo holds up to eight SATA I or SATA II 3.5" drives and utilizes two Gigabit Ethernet ports for quickly transferring data while connected to your network switches or computers.

For securing your data, this Drobo utilizes both Drobo Sync and BeyondRAID technologies. Drobo Sync allows you to use Drobo's convenient Dashboard Management graphic user interface to backup whatever files you have on your B800fs Drobo to another B800fs Drobo in a remote location. Drobo Sync can setup a regular schedule for backups and will work with a normal WAN/Ethernet connection or through a VPN.

BeyondRAID offers the data protection that is delivered by advanced RAID technology, without the limitations, drawbacks, and stringent requirements required to create a RAID array. You won't be locked into using the same size disks, and you won't have to migrate data off the array to add capacity. When the array starts to fill up, simply add another disk -- or replace one of the disks in the array with one of a higher capacity. If a disk fails, simply replace it -- no data will be lost. All told, this Drobo is a sophisticated network storage solution for your business when you want to securely save your data on site and remotely in a complete different location as a safeguard against floods, fires, or theft.

Drobo BeyondRAID
BeyondRAID technology built into this Drobo addresses the shortcomings of traditional RAID technology and makes virtualizing disk drives usable by everyone. BeyondRAID provides these enhancements over traditional RAID:
  • Thin Provisioning allows you to expand the capacity of your Drobo by just replacing a smaller drive with a larger one

  • Instant Expansion occurs when a new, or larger, drive is inserted without any disruption in service

  • Mixed Drive Utilization allows you to insert any drive, of any capacity, or any type, and the Drobo will optimally use it

  • Automatic Protection Levels is a function ensuring that the best algorithm is used to protect the Drobo from drive failure based on the number of drives that are inserted. This security feature is automatic, so, unlike RAID, you need not configure it

  • Dual Disk Redundancy enhances BeyondRAID protection by guarding from multiple drive failures in a short period of time. Even if two drives fail, BeyondRAID will attempt to use the remaining drives to return to a protected state

  • Virtual Hot Spare cuts down on waste by utilizing all drives at all times so that no drives sit idle. With some traditional RAID systems, a drive can be marked as a "hot spare", waiting on standby for another drive to fail before it can take over

  • Drobos are Data Aware, intelligently handling data for added resiliency, performance, and management. Being Data Aware allows the Drobo to have a capacity gauge on the front, to quickly recover in the event of a drive failure, to enable intelligent tiering of data, and much more

  • Drive Re-ordering allows Drobo disks to be moved to another Drobo, and even re-ordered, while still functioning
  • Drobo Sync
Drobo Sync is the data offsite backup/replication tool integrated into this Drobo that's designed to provide simple, fast, and reliable data replication for your small business on a schedule of your choosing. Simple to setup and use, Drobo Sync seamlessly replicates your data to another DroboPro FS on your network or VPN in a remote location. This safeguard ensures that your data will be available in the event of disaster. It is integrated into the Drobo Dashboard and is configured with just a few clicks
    Drobo Dashboard Management
Drobo Dashboard is the easy-to-use graphic user interface for managing the Drobo. It provides you with the same status lights and capacity gauge that are on the front panel of the actual storage unit. All administration tasks are a single click away and there's even a built-in data protection tool called Drobo Copy to easily copy data to and from your Drobo
Seamless Integration with Apple Time Machine
Using Time Machine with Drobo is as easy as clicking one box in the Drobo Dashboard software
    Easy to Install
This Drobo is designed so that you can simply insert hard disk drives without needing special parts or screws
    Work Friendly
Although this Drobo is especially designed to be rack mounted, it is compact and quiet enough to place in an office or on a desk without being a distraction
    DroboApps
This Drobo supports DroboApps which is an entire world of community-created and community-supported applications that can be run on the Linux-based operating system embedded in Drobo FS and the DroboPro FS
Drobo Care Service and Support Program
You can optionally purchase the Drobo Care service and support program, which extends your peace of mind for three years beyond the standard warranty terms

This products was meant to be my TimeMachine backup device for my Mac Pro. Data Robotics has sent me out a new device, but having the same issues. They are currently working with me to get to the bottom of the issue. If it's resolved, I will update my review.

          Comments about Drobo B800fs 8-Bay Network-Attached Storage:

I have 5.7 GB of data on this with 7 GB free.
This unit setup quick and easily. I started with two 3TB drives and started putting data on from 4 sources (including a backup from my server) and the data went on quickly. Then over the next few days I started adding drives (still copying data from 6 locations) and switched to double-redundant and this thing didn't even hiccup - I was still able to watch a movie or listen to music from the unit. A nice bonus is the 10 PC license for backing up to the unit - super easy.

            Comments about Drobo B800fs 8-Bay Network-Attached Storage:

As I learned the hard way, computer hard drives fail, even in brand new computers. I had a funky back up regime for our office of 12 Macs consisting of each computer having its own external hard drive connected to it. It was bad because if the office burned down or was robbed, the back-ups would burn with it. So every two weeks I would make a back up of the most important data and store those off-site. And the individual hard drives daily backing up each computer had to be monitored frequently, and they often failed. It was a risky and time-consuming backup strategy. Our business has grown and that risk has become unacceptable.

After lots of research on the web, I hooked up this Drobo B800fs to our local office network. Quickly and easily I backed up each computer using Time Machine, the native and excellent Mac backup software. The Drobo then warns me by email if one of the 8 drives have crashed. Backup data is not lost if one or two or maybe even more drives fail at once (very unlikely) as there is enough space in the array to backup up all the computers several times over.

I ran an Ethernet cable off-site to a nearby building and put this Drobo there, installed 8 3TB drives. Then on each computer I downloaded Drobo Dashboard, the required software to set up each computer to back up to to the Drobo. There is even an option in the Drobo Dashboard set-up software to allow your Mac's Time Machine app to back up to the Drobo. How wonderful is that! Instead of writing from scratch their own backup app, the people at Drobo simply allowed Time Machine to do what it was made for.

Word of warning: visit Drobo's website to find out which Drobo is best for your needs as they have lots of helpful pages on this. Then completely read the user manual for the device and for Drobo Dashboard, the software you must install in each computer you want to back up. It's not too much reading. Most important chapter is the one covering "Shares," which are akin to partitions that are set up on the Drobo array. You must read this chapter to wrap your head around how it all works. Fret not, it's easy! You just have to read it, otherwise you'll have no idea what to do.

            I highly recommend this machine.
