The D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only) from Nikon is the ideal camera for those who want the best that Nikon has to offer without jumping into the ring (and price range) of professional DSLRs. It is a powerful, durable, well-designed camera that takes incredible photos and is also geared for those who want to shoot high quality video with a level of control not found in other mid-class DSLRs.

The 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS sensor works together with Nikon's EXPEED 2 image processor to produce extremely detailed images with rich tones and smooth gradations. The EXPEED 2, designed by Nikon, enables faster processing of images, reduced power consumption, improved noise-reduction and better color reproduction. And by expanding the ISO sensitivity range to a 25600 ISO equivalent, low-light photography is more detailed and fast -moving subjects can be captured with more accuracy and less blur.

The D7000 offers a customizable 39-point AF system with nine center cross-type sensors for accurate and extremely fast autofocus across the entire sensor.  The AF system works in collaboration with an incredible metering system. The 2016-pixel RGB sensor with a 3D color matrix is able to recognize a subject's shape and position for improved AF tracking as well as an optimized Scene Recognition System which better controls exposure, white balance and iTTL flash.

Accurate it is, but fast too. With a start-up time of 0.13 seconds, 50 milliseconds lag time and 6 frames per second burst shooting up to 100 shots you should never miss a shot. The 3.0" 921k-dot LCD with 170º display offers crisp image playback and precise Live View when shooting movies.  The pentaprism optical viewfinder is bright and covers 100% of the frame. And putting the D7000 a notch above its competitors is its pro-like durability including weather and dust sealing, a magnesium-alloy top and rear covers and a shutter system that has been rated to over 150,000 cycles. Also, the built-in Speedlight flash with iTTL and Wireless Commander makes it possible to trigger up to 8 off-camera flashes using the D7000.

Nikon calls the D7000, "a new class of Nikon camera", which refers mostly to this camera's ability to shoot pro-grade Full HD 1080p video. Manual exposure control and full-time continuous autofocus offer the kind of image control that sets this camera above other DSLRs. You're able to shoot in cinema quality 24fps or Internet-friendly 720p at 30fps - up to 20 minutes per clip. To enhance your production, utilize an optional wireless or hot shoe mounted microphone using the stereo mic input and when you're done shooting, there's an HDMI output for easy connection to your HDTV.

With video or stills, the D7000 records to reliable and easy-to-use SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards. And the camera has twin memory card slots - meaning there's no need to change media mid-shoot. Just move onto the second card without interruption or organize your videos onto one card and your stills on another.

The D7000 also offers creative and assistive features like Picture Control system. Choose from scene settings like vivid, monochrome, and landscape. You can also utilize scene modes with names like child, close-up, and night portrait. And Active D-Lighting optimizes high contrast images to restore the shadow and highlight details that are often lost with strong lighting. Other creative controls include in-camera RAW image processing and the ability to add in special effects like fisheye and miniature effect. A Virtual Horizon Graphic Indicator allows you to place a grid image over the scene you are shooting in order to guarantee straight lines when shooting architecture and landscapes.

The Nikon D7000 is an elegant, compact DSLR with features that put it at the top of its class and a price-tag that will save you money toward the purchase of one of the great 60-plus NIKKOR lenses with which it is compatible.

16.2MP DX-Format Sensor + EXPEED 2 Image Processing System
With its 16.2MP CMOS image sensor and Nikon's new EXPEED 2 image processing system, the D7000 DSLR delivers superior image quality with low noise. The EXPEED 2 image processing engine combined with a 14-bit analog/digital conversion brings a new level of even tonal gradations while managing color, contrast, exposure, and noise resulting in brilliant image quality. EXPEED 2 also manages the D7000's speedy 5-millisecond shutter response, blazing AF speed and rapid six frames-per-second (fps) burst speed for up to 100 images
Full 1080p High Definition Video Capture with the D-Movie Function
Building upon the popular D90 DSLR, the Nikon D7000 captures breathtaking full 1080p HD movies with full-time autofocus and manual exposure control using the D-Movie function. To keep critical HD focus, users can choose to engage a variety of AF functions, including face priority to track up to 35 human faces, subject-tracking and normal or wide-area autofocus

Advanced movie features also allow exposure adjustment on the fly while recording. The D7000 DSLR offers variable frame rates and resolutions, and can record 1080p at a cinema-like 24fps, or a web-friendly 720p at either 24 or 30fps for up to 20 minutes per clip. Once recorded, users are able to edit and trim video clips in the camera to save time in post production. Whether utilizing a wireless or hot shoe mounted microphone, sound can be recorded via the stereo microphone input for professional audio results

To further simplify movie shooting, Live View is activated by a single dedicated switch, and HD video recording is achieved by pressing a single button. The D7000 DSLR also incorporates a built-in HDMI output CEC compliant (Consumer Electronic Control) that allows users to connect it to a HDTV and playback with most HDTV remote controls

By adding versatile NIKKOR lenses to the equation, photographers can create a variety of photo perspectives with video such as isolating subjects with a shallow depth of field, and recording in low light conditions. Combining the D7000 DSLR with NIKKOR lenses also delivers the sharpness essential for HD video, and Nikon's innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) II technology helps to eliminate the effects of camera shake

39 Point AF System
The D7000 DSLR features a 39 point AF System, which includes nine center cross-type sensors that operate with more than 60 NIKKOR lenses. The 39 points in the new Multi-CAM 4800DX AF module work together to provide superior subject acquisition and fast tracking capabilities, allowing photographers to confidently capture a player stealing third from the sideline to fast-moving wildlife. Additionally, photographers can activate dynamic or single point AF, configurable in combinations of 9, 21 or 39 or a 21 point ring to match a variety of shooting styles and situations. Photographers can activate 3D tracking, which continuously follows moving subjects within the 39 AF points, highlighting the activated AF point in the viewfinder

An additional feature of the autofocus system is AF fine tune. Photographers sometimes require an extra level of ultra-fine AF tuning. This feature allows you to individually fine-tune and register the autofocus position for up to 12 lens models, then apply that compensation whenever the same lens is attached. You can also register adjustments uniformly regardless of the type of lens used

3D Color Matrix Metering System + Scene Recognition System
Utilizing Nikon's exclusive Scene Recognition System, the camera analyzes subject information from a database containing more than 30,000 images to optimize focus, exposure and white balance. To assist in creating amazing imagery, the Scene Recognition System reads data from a groundbreaking 2,016 pixel 3D color Matrix Metering sensor that examines the scene's brightness and color data then optimizes the camera's performance prior to the actual exposure. Another revolutionary Nikon first, this system interprets scene data for improved control of light metering and i-TTL flash output. Additionally this sensor allows for an "Ambient" white balance setting which can be activated to allow warm rendering in Automatic White Balance
Built-In i-TTL Flash + Speedlight Compatibility
The built-in iTTL Speedlight pops up in a flash, and it offers wide-angle flash-coverage that accommodates 16mm lenses. The camera also has Wireless Commander support so users can maximize the potential of Nikon's creative lighting options. Using the integral flash set to Wireless Commander in combination with one or several off-camera Nikon Speedlights, the shooter can create a unique look for each and every photograph. Up to 8 Speedlights can be fired at once - including Nikon's flagship SB-900, as well as others in the series, including the SB-600 and SB-800/SB-700
Low Light Image Capture
The D7000 DSLR continues Nikon's tradition of providing photographers the confidence to shoot in low light, knowing they will capture high quality low-noise images. The camera's native ISO range of 100-6400 affords the versatility to photograph in challenging lighting conditions, such as when indoors or in the evening. The ISO range can be expanded to a Hi-2 setting of 25,600, which was previously found only in Nikon FX-format territory. The camera allows more light to be gathered, resulting in a correctly exposed image that has less noise and finer grain
Enhanced Build Quality, Durability, and Usability
The compact design is lightweight enough for a full days use, but has a reassuring heft that hints at Nikon's reputation for reliability. The durable camera body consists of a magnesium-alloy top and rear covers and a 150,000 cycle-rated shutter system. Additionally, the D7000 DSLR is dust and moisture sealed and features Nikon's dust reduction system to remove image-degrading particles from the image sensor. Among the well laid out ergonomics, users will immediately notice a Mode Dial that eschews traditional Scene Mode icons for more advanced manual functions and two user-defined settings (U1 and U2) to adapt to a users shooting style on the fly. Placed under the control wheel is a Release Mode dial, which allows access the burst modes, timer, or the Quiet Shutter, to soften the cameras operation when shooting in sensitive environments such as a ceremonies or nature
Pentaprism Optical Viewfinder + 170° 3" LCD Display
When framing lush landscapes or tight telephoto shots from afar, users will appreciate the large, bright glass pentaprism optical viewfinder has approximately 100% frame coverage and approximately 0.94x magnification. The 3", 921,000 dot super-density LCD monitor with 170° viewing delivers bright, crisp image playback and precise Live View and movie shooting
Twin Memory Card Slots
The D7000 DSLR features twin SD card slots with SD, SDHC, SDXC memory card compatibility that offers a several recording options including designating separate NEF (RAW) JPEG and movie files
Long Life EN-EL15 Battery
The D7000 was designed to provide maximum performance with minimized power usage. The camera employs a new EN-EL15 battery which enables up to 1050 shots when fully charged
Creative Controls
The D7000 DSLR contains many features aimed at empowering the user with creative freedom including the ability to process RAW images directly in the camera, and add in special effects using the retouch menu. Among the many editing options are color filters, distortion control for a fisheye effect, perspective control for a miniature effect, or a new color sketch filter that creates a sketch-styled image. As always, manipulated images are saved as copies while the original is retained

The Picture Control system also allows the choice for standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome, portrait, or landscape settings to apply a personal look and feel to their pictures, and it's versatile scene modes let them choose from portrait, landscape, child, sports, close-up or night portrait for stunning results even in challenging conditions

I bought this camera for my own personal use.
I mainly take photos of whatever I find interesting. I am a hobbyist photographer.

It can be from fast moving cars, to sleeping animals or a bright, colorful sunset. Up close or far away, the pictures come out great.

I took engagement photos for one of my family members and they were amazed at how great they looked straight out of the camera.

I love the presets, but what I love more about it is the tweaking you can do in camera!
You can adjust just about anything in the camera from sharpness to ISO, vividness, etc depending on the mode you are in.

HDR photos are also easy and come out great.

I also really like the two User settings on the thumb dial. You can create your own settings and save them to that specific dial setting (U1 or U1) and you can go back and forth to your settings and the presets with ease.

I also really love the dual-SD card feature. You can have the camera setup to mirror the cards, take a RAW on one and JPEG on the other or use the second card as an overflow. Make sure to pick up a very fast SD card though. This thing is quick! A 32GB card will last you 899 shots when using RAW.

The 100% viewfinder is a HUGE plus. I had a DSLR before this one and it was only 95% coverage. Some things I didn't want in the picture sometimes ended up on the very edge of it. But with the D7000, what you see in the viewfinder is what you get in the picture.

I haven't found anything I'm unhappy with. I'm pretty detail oriented and the photos this camera takes are quite spectacular.

I would definitely get a long zoom lens, such as the 70-300mm VR or 55-300mm VR lens. You'll be amazed at how close you can get to something while being far away.

    Battery life is very good.
    Screen clarity is very good.

The D7000 is also amazingly priced for the features and quality.

We used a D300 for the past 2 years and we are very satisfied with it. We purchased the D7000 because we needed an additional camera body.

According to the DxOMark website's overall rankings, the D7000' sensor is currently nr. 8 on the list, just below the D3. The ranking of the D7000 is impressive.

Compared with the D300, I want to make the following comments:

    1. It is difficult to remove the EN-EL15 battery from the D7000. Besides the clip holding the battery, a small ridge inside the camera compartment prevents it from being easily removed.

    2. Why can't Nikon standardise their batteries? The D300 uses the excellent EN-EL3E battery. If you need a spare battery, you need to buy a different model battery – and you need to carry 2 chargers with you!

    3. The connector cover on the D7000 is much better than the horrible connector cover of the D300.

4.I like the mode dial on the D7000. It is much easier to change settings for scenes on the D7000 than the manual adjustments you need to make with the D300. This is supposedly an amateurish feature, but I don't care and it makes the D7000 camera much easier to use. You can still make your own manual adjustments.

    5. I prefer the feeling of the D300 in my hands. The focus point selector, light metering button and multi-selector works better and easier for me on the D300. The D300 has a bigger control panel display.

    6. The D7000 is slightly smaller than the D300, but it still balances nicely with our lenses.

    7. I believe the D7000 is a nice addition to our photographic equipment, and it would do its intended tasks well. I don't believe it is a real & significant upgrade to the D300 … as it isn't supposed to be.

    8. The D7000 is slightly lighter than the D300. Weight becomes a real issue when you carry the camera for long periods.

    9. I won't sell the D300 to buy a D7000 or D300s; but I will sell the D300 to buy the D300s' replacement (D400?) when it becomes available.

I wish Nikon can add a GPS built-in feature as standard in all their cameras. Even cheap mobile phones have GPS's and it wouldn't cost Nikon more than $10 to incorporate a GPS in a camera. A camera needs only a very basic built in GPS, as add-on equipment are always troublesome or awkward to use.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

This is an excellent camera. I decided to upgrade my D90 and didn't want to spend the big bucks for $ a new D7100.
The camera I received looked almost new. No significant defects.

The only issue I had was that the LCD screen supplied was not a Nikon BM-11. It was a knockoff and wouldn't stay attached to the camera. It fell off several times during a shoot and I was able to retrieve it and reattach. However when I returned home I noticed it was gone forever.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I am a professional photographer and I use the Nikon D7000. It is a great learning camera. I have used it so much now it is like an extension of my hand. I don't even have to think about operating it. I love it so much I sold my old back up camera to buy another D7000 body because I don't want to use anything else in an emergency. I am sure as my skill level progresses I will upgrade cameras again, but I will always think of my 7000 as a best friend.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I got this camera after my Canon T3 bit the dust after being lightly splashed (and I mean like a few drops). I decided that I was better off getting a more dependable and durable dslr but after a lot of researching Canons beginer to Pro-Sumer dslrs I came up empty. The only camera I felt moderately comfortable with was the 7D but it was out of my price range. So I turned to nikon and in no time at all I found the D7000. The D7000 has everything I need and a lot more, sharp, high quality images, great ISO performance, and magnificent build quality and weather sealing for it's class. After having the camera for a few weeks I can say with confidence that the D7000 is completely superior to my T3 in every way, especially build quality, after using my D7000 the T3 feels like a toy camera. I completely recommend it to anyone looking for a tough, high quality Pro-Sumer level camera that will last a good long time. My only real gripe is the placement of the ISO button. It isn't on the top of the camera like in upper end canon models which makes it a bit of a pain since you have to take your eye away from the viewfinder to change ISO. But exposure compensation gets a spot on the top which I find very helpful, especially when shooting in the evening. In conclusion: get this camera, you will not regret it. And I mean that whole heartedly.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

My d70 was getting old use it as a kick around I have all these dx lenses so I was on the hunt. At this price (700) you just can't say no. It has all the usability of a pro, especially if you shoot in raw. You can set the k temp white balance as you shoot (no more gray card yippie!!!).
I do studio photography and use camera pro2 also you can get live view with the d7000 which is a big plus. I like the flash control if you're using it as the commander with multiple flashes.
Basically if you are d70 or d90 user this baby has all the bells and whistles you have been wishing for...

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

My first DSLR, after years of film cameras and a few point and shoot digitals. I was taking experimental pictures within minutes of charging the battery. And my old Nikon AIS lenses work fine. Also the D7000 has a focus motor in body so I can use AF-Nikkors too. Not to mention a couple Nikon DX lenses that I can't use on the earlier cameras. I am doing what I mostly do, which is product shots for the internet. I started with that the first afternoon. Put the D7000 on manual, pop up the little flash and dial back the intensity, to trigger a slave. Camera on a tripod with Arca ballhead. I am using a Norman P2000 with 2 heads and a slave unit in the socket. Now I am shooting at f11 again. And I can evaluate the results right then on the LCD panel. You don't even need flash meter, just find the exposure by trial and error. It has paid for itself in 2 weeks and improved the quality of my photos. It is also easier to work with than what I was using prior. But this cmera has far more capabilities than this. I am just starting to explore those features. Awesome as it is, it has a real learning curve. I am working through the Busch book on the D7000. I can recommended that, especially if you are new to DSLR's, as I am.
Other things to note are that this is DX format so there is a crop factor, thus a 50mm lens becomes a portrait lens rather than a normal lens as it is in 35mm. And the viewfinder is physically smaller than I am used to on say a Nikon F3. But it is a great camera and has double the megapixels of what it replaced. I am very happy with the purchase.

I'm very happy with my D7000. I'm using a 50mm f1.8 lens and the results are beautiful. Next on my list, a new flash and a 18-200mm lens or a wide lens. I wouldn't mind the 85mm f1.4 lens. Broke my tripod, so I need one of those. This camera is a leap from my D40x, it was much needed. It's quick, easy to navigate and not too heavy like most cameras.

I'm not a professional photographer. Mostly I take pictures of my family and friends, but I try to think beyond snapshots. I bought a D70 in 2007, loved it immediately, and it's been my workhorse camera ever since. When it gave up the ghost this winter, I considered the D5300 and similar models, but finally settled on the D7000 because it can autofocus my favorite lens, an old F2.8 70-200 tele.
First impressions of the D7000 are excellent: it's my beloved D70 only lighter, faster, better autofocus and more intuitive controls.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I mostly do landscapes and wildlife but am planning to transition to portrature. This was a perfect step for me from my D5100. I did not need more pixels but I wanted more control. That was what I got. The U1 and U2 settings combined with easy handling and the ability to use my older manual primes have made this an awesome purchase. I really cannot find fault at all with this body. If I had to nit pic, I would say the top LCD is superfluous to the rear display. Overall the D7000 was one of my best photography purchases.

Comments about Nikon D7000 SLR Digital Camera (Body Only):

I bought the D7000 last week. My first DSLR was a D50 back in the day. Then, I went on to the D5100. Then, recently came into a situation where a built-in autofocus motor would have been nice. Decided to sell my D5100 setup and go for the D7000 after reading many reviews in many different places.

I am so happy that I dropped the extra money and finally found a reasonably priced Nikon DSLR that competes with the big dogs.

I will miss my D5100 and have always held a special place in my heart for the D50 since that's where it all began for me.

Purchased the Nikon Battery grip for the D7000 at the time of purchase. Got an extra Nikon Battery and a DX zoom to bring it all in. Yeah, it hurt the wallet at first. But, I have been very impressed with the ease of access in regards to high-traffic functions that used to be in the menus. I'm not a pro so I'm not going to sit here and drop all that lingo on this website. All I want to say is that if you are considering moving on from the entry levels, this is a great option for you as an economical solution. There are a lot of videos online to help you get a grasp on the D7000 and the handbook that comes with it is superb. Take the time to do the research on how to use the functions and you will be amazed at what this tank can do. Since my purchase, I have found myself consistently shooting in MANUAL and developed many more skills by experimenting with all the options at my fingertips.

To summarize, I would like to say that the D7000 is a well made camera with multiple setting that can be controlled at the push of a button instead of menu adjustments. It is a very fast camera with 6fps continuous. It is compatible with many more lenses with the built-in autofocus motor. And, if you're in to vertical shooting, Nikon makes a battery grip specifically for this model.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

And, thank you to the excellent staff at B&H for answering my questions leading up to my purchase. I enjoyed my experience throughout the purchase process and will continue to shop on your website in the future due to your great reputation and knowledgeable staff.

                                THANKS!
