The Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition from Epson lets you produce high-quality professional grade prints right from your own computer. Thanks to its cost-saving large ink cartridges and small footprint, the 3880 Ink Jet Printer is the perfect solution for in-house photo printing. The 4 black cartridges, including a light black and a light, light black produce black and white photos of the highest quality. Epson's three-level black technology simultaneously uses black, light black, and light, light black ink to produce an accurate gray balance. Unlike other photo printers, the 3880 features auto-switching Matte and Photo Black cartridges, so you won't have to worry about which one to use.

The 8 pigments are delivered onto the paper in amounts as small as 3.5 picoliters while the ink-repelling coating ensures accurate dot placement. Epson's Proprietary Active Meniscus Control further enhances the ink delivery's accuracy by controlling the curvature of every ink droplet within each nozzle before it's released onto the media. Also, the Designer edition includes EFI eXpress for Epson.

Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology

A highly acclaimed, 8-color, pigment-based ink system, Epson UltraChrome K3 with Vivid Magenta has revolutionized the professional printing industry, redefining what's possible in color and black-and-white printing.
A high-density form of magenta pigments that produce an enhanced color gamut with vibrant blues and violets
Professional print permanence ratings for truly sellable quality prints
High-gloss Microcrystal Encapsulation for an improved glossy finish
Instant color stability, immediately after printing, with no short-term color shifting

8-Channel MicroPiezo AMC Print Head With Ink-Repelling Coating

One inch wide, the print head delivers a maximum resolution of 2880 x 1440 dpi. It produces variable-sized ink droplets as small as 3.5 picoliters to simultaneously optimize photographic quality and dramatically decrease print times.
Proprietary Active Meniscus Control (AMC) technology precisely controls the curvature of every ink droplet within each nozzle before releasing it onto the media.
A unique ink-repelling coating helps to prevent ink build-up around the nozzles, allowing for precise and accurate dot placement, and reduced maintenance.

AccuPhoto HD2 Image Technology

Created from collaboration between Epson and the Rochester Institute of Technology's Munsell Color Science Laboratory, AccuPhoto HD2 combines a complex mathematical architecture with an advanced screening technology to provide outstanding image quality.
AccuPhoto HD2 is specifically engineered to ensure precision placement of each individual ink droplet, resulting in smooth, grain-free images. Choosing from an extraordinary number of possible ink combinations for each color, this technology optimizes the ink use to maximize the color gamut and provide smooth color transitions and gradations. Reduction of the metameric index makes it possible to achieve consistent color under different lighting conditions.
Epson PreciseColor Technology
Every Epson Stylus Pro 3880 meets the standards of Epson PreciseColor manufacturing. This rigorous process applies colorimetric calibration to ensure that individual printers of the same model produce prints that are virtually indistinguishable from one another.

Three-level Black Ink Technology with Two Auto-sharing Black Ink Modes

Three-level Black technology simultaneously uses Black, Light Black and Light, Light Black ink, resulting in richer blacks, an unsurpassed gray balance and stunning tonal range. Whether a panorama of fall foliage or a black-and-white portrait shot in subdued light, your print will duplicate exactly what you saw through the lens.
The 3880 automatically switches between two different Black ink modes - Photo Black or Matte Black. This optimizes the Dmax (Black ink density) for various media types, so whether you're printing on traditional photographic media or unique, fine art paper, final print quality is dramatically improved.
Automatic Print Head Alignment and Cleaning Technology
A built-in sensor automatically reads printed data for highly precise alignment of all color channels, both bi-directional and uni-directional, resulting in outstanding accuracy. In addition, the automatic print head cleaning mode analyzes a printed nozzle check pattern and automatically cleans the print head, if even a partially clogged nozzle is detected.
High-capacity Ink System
Epson's pressurized ink cartridge technology enables reliable ink delivery at all print speeds, while dramatically reducing the size of the ink cartridges themselves.
Nine individual 80 ml ink cartridges ensure truly professional printing
On-the-fly ink cartridge replacement increases productivity

Compact, 17-Inch Wide Printer

Even with its surprisingly small footprint, the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 offers a number of advantages. Its print engine technology takes full advantage of the latest in precision mechanical design, resulting in a significant reduction in overall printer size and weight. In fact, it's equal in size to many competitive 13-inch printers.
Quiet operation that won't interfere with other activities in the studio - or the residence
Large, 2.5-inch, backlit LCD control panel for easy, direct printer control and status monitoring
Professional Media Handling
The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 supports a full range of professional, photographic and fine art media, not only to meet your day-to-day requirements, but also to fuel and stimulate your creativity.

I am a full time returning to college student and my major is photography. We use Epson printers exclusively in all our digital print labs so my choice for my own printer without hesitation was Epson. Last semester the print labs were so full that at times pulling a print off one of the printers was at least a 45 minute wait.

This printer right out of the box has performed far beyond my initial expectations. We all know that any equipment needs some tweaking along with a reasonable break in time. To give the printer a test I pulled a jpeg image off the internet pretty much at random. Epson included in the box 10 sheets of 8 1/2 x 11 of their luster paper. The first print out of the printer was no less than exceptional. I printed thru Photoshop Cs6 and used their color management.

I am using Canson's Infinity Baryta 17 x 22 for black and white printing with Canson's ICC profiles. The first black and white print was nothing less than stellar. It took a few minutes to print but the results were worth the wait. Breath taking tonality, deep blacks, highlights, mid-tones and shadows all were exceptional.

The setup instructions were clear and direct, everything was included in the box EXCEPT the A to B USB cord???, which you need if you are not using a network.

This printer is definately for the EXPERIENCED USER. If you have not spent time using this level of printer you will probably be dissatisfied.

I have had the printer a little over two weeks and I cannot say I have anything negative to comment on. I have printed a little over a hundred prints so far, I am very, very pleased.

OK, this may take awhile to write. While I love the quality of the prints that this printer produces, I question the build quality.

I bought this to go with my R2400 since my photography business has grown. The R2400 has been a workhorse for me for over 6 or 7 years. I bought the 3880 in October of 2010. By June, I had to call for service. It gave an error message. Epson promptly replaced it. I boxed up the original and they sent me a replacement. As soon as i set up the replacement, i found out it was DOA. I called, they apologized and sent another one. So, when fedex delivered the second replacement, I sent back two broken ones. I opened the second replacement and guess what? It had another service message. Epson apologized and told me to box it up and they were shipping out another replacement. I questioned them about what they were sending me and was told refurbs. even though they were very nice and apologetic it was still a PITA. I got the third replacement and it has worked since June of 2010. Now, my business has grown even more and i've just ordered a 7890 being delivered by 18 wheeler tomorrow. I have been really busy this Christmas season with family sessions and my High school seniors. My 3880 quit again today. I called Epson and was told that I was *hi* out of luck my warranty had expired. I told them that I am not so sure of Epson quality anymore and that i am considering refusing the shipment tomorrow of the new 7890 at this point. Finally, the Epson person finally agreed to send me out another replacement since I explained to them that i was told that my warranty would start over from the 3rd replacement refurb. They assured me that this was not how they do it but that they would make an exception since I was told this. Seriously I was told this at the time when I raised my concern over them sending me out 3 replacement refurbs to replace one new printer under warranty.

I am just really questioning Epson 3880 build quality. How the heck can they be up to par when i am now going on my 4th one? Problems mostly include paper feeding mechanisms and other things that i am not aware of.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition:

This is my second 3880 Epson printer. I made a mistake in trying to save some money by buying a refurbished 3880 from another company, but when it arrived it was not in a working condition. I was able to get a refund and decided to go back to B&H, where I got my first 3880 printer. The shipment was prompt and sent the same day I made the purchase. I purchased the second 3880 because I have had such a good experience with it. We use the Epson printers in our studio to primarily do restoration of older photographs. The majority of prints we sell are 16x20 and smaller and these printers, with our volume, fit our daily use very nicely

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition:

An entry level professional sheet fed printer with high running costs. We are running a toner based printer alongside Epson 3880 and the running costs are markedly different in favour of the toner based printer.
The printer produces good quality prints but cost-quality ratio is disproportionate.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition:

This is my second printer in this series. I had the 3800 previously. First let me say that I would rate the print quality out of these printers at 5 stars. Epson printers do make the best prints out there. But a what cost. The ink cartridges, there are nine of them, hold 80 ml of ink. They cost an average of [$] each. At 8735 ml per gallon we are paying not quite [$], yes, two thousand, 400 dollars, a gallon for the ink. If you don't use the printer often the ink heads will clog and you will have to clean the heads by purging ink through them or if you let it sit you will have to do a more through cleaning of the heads by purging a massive amount of ink through them. If you are using it regularly, it will occasionally self clean the heads. All of this is pumping your precious [$] a gallon ink into a waste tank. A waste tank that when about 40 percent full will tell you that it is totally full and the printer will not work until you replace the waste tank. Epson should give the printers away for free and be happy with the ink sales. With my old machine, I didn't use the machine or clean the heads often enough and the heads were so clogged that they needed replacing. The cost of a new head is about [$] plus the labor of about [$] which is not quite half the cost of a new printer. Thus my new printer. All that being said, the number of prints I do run through my machine is oddly still less expensive than having high quality prints made at my local professional print shop. I do very much like the prints the machine makes. I do very much feel abused at the true costs involved in making them.

I used this printer to create a series of exhibition prints from scanned film negatives. The results look as good, if not better than, prints made from the original negs onto silver-based paper. That in itself is amazing enough, but I am also amazed at how fast and quiet this thing is...also how reliable the sheet feeder is. I've had high end printers before from a company with two initials. The paper feed was so difficult and touchy with that particular brand that I nearly cried tears of joy when I saw prints spitting out of the Epson. You can walk away, leave this thing unattended, and come back an hour later to a stack of perfect prints.

This is *not* a plug-and-play device, but installation is straightforward. I spent about 3 hours on the process, not including about 5 hours of housekeeping to reorganize my study to accommodate the printer. There are four stages:

1: With help d/t awkwardness more than weight, postion the packing box near the printer's permanent resting place and lift it out of the box and plastic bag onto the table/counter where it will live.
1a: Make sure that USB cable you bought will reach from the printer to the computer (you *did* measure before ordering, right?). Ditto for the ethernet and power cables. When you measured before ordering, did you allow for enough headroom, rear space (6-8 inches seems essential),and front space (17" paper might be coming out the front soon!)
2: Tape -- there are many, many pieces of tape. Put on a headlamp and look into the slots. Take your time, made sure you have them all. Be gentle, some plastic parts feel fragile.
3: Ink -- It takes about 5 minutes to unpackage and mount all 9 ink cartridges and about 10 minutes for the printer to prime (with the printer *not* connected to the computer, so the computer doesn't get confused).
4: Software installation. You can begin this process while the ink is priming, but it's much briefer than the priming process. The installation process eventually asks you to connect the printer. But this request times out, at which point installation hangs.
4a: The solution to this is simply to start the installation (over again) *after* the ink-priming process has completed. The install package detects the steps that were completed on the first try, and doesn't repeat them.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition:

Amateur photographer who purchased printer to begin printing higher quality photos and graphics. Print quality is excellent and the printer is relatively simple to use.

I like the limited real-estate needed for a printer capable of printer fairly large formats.

Only issue I had was setting printer up. I'm using it over a Windows-NT network & installation not as simple as other printers I've installed. I usually can do this myself, but had to have help with from a local IT company who works on our network issues.

I'm a graphic designer and I use this for proofing purposes for my clients. I do some photography as well and I love printing out professional quality prints. The colors are fantastic. Easy to use and set up. It's a bit of a stretch calling it a 'desktop' printer but fortunately does indeed fit on my desk. The inks seem to last a good while. The RIP software that it comes with leaves a bit to be desired. It's very wonky and not very intuitive. And I work with RIPs for large-format printing everyday. But this EFI eXpress for Epson seems pretty junky. I only got it for it's Post Script printing abilities(otherwise, you have to convert all your files to bitmap images which is no good if you work in Illustrator or InDesign). But the RIP is nothing special. It has trouble dealing with an transparency in PostScript files. You're better of just converting the PS files to bitmaps by opening them in Photoshop. I don't quite get why RIP's cannot deal with transparency when Photoshop does a perfect job at it, everytime. Just a person peeve of mine.

But the printer itself is amazing.

So far I love this printer. I print on thicker paper more often than not and so far I haven't had a problem and I don't have to hand feed it. It will take a stack of paper no problem. I've printed on different textures, all with good outcomes. I haven't printed enough to have to replace the ink cartridges yet, but it is a concern of mine. I'm impressed with the image quality.

One warning is that the box it ships in is huge. It's 60 pounds and I would say approx. 4 feet wide.

I print posters and large portraits on glossy, luster and matte papers. This is a significant upgrade from my Epson R1800. It is odd seeing the same results without a gloss overcoat. I wish it could do matte and glossy black with different heads instead of having to purge one ink to print the other. The RIP should prove to be quite an improvement for exceeding the Epson 44" limit in some of my posters.

I am about to fill up my wall with allot of pictures. Thank you Epson engineers for desinging a wonderful printer.

I purchased the Stylus Pro 3880 Ink Jet Printer Designer Edition with bundled Efi software color management advertised as compatible with Macintosh computers.. I can't say how well it the color management works because it is not compatible with Lion, the current Mac operating system. I have called Epson to ask them when they will release an upgrade and they said they don't know. Lion has been out for a year. What is the hold up?

Don't purchase this if you are running Lion.

Comments about Epson Stylus Pro 3880 Color Inkjet Printer Designer Edition:

I purchased this printer for its "straight'thru" feed path, and the arhcival quality prints it makes. Having used the Epson 3800 for over two years, I was fairly certain this was the printer I wanted. The only minus (I bought the designer edition - because I wanted the RIP software) is that the RIP (EFI express) is NOT the same one that came with the 3800 (Colorburst). While I think this one will prove to be a better, more sophisticated RIP that will allow for more precise choices, it is difficult to get up and running with it very quickly. The software website is not very good, which makes getting up and running even more challenging.

The printer itself is everything the 3800 was; the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the RIP.
