The Silver Efex Pro 2 Software from Nik Software is a powerful plug-in application for Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom, and Apple Aperture. It gives you all the tools necessary to convert color images from your digital camera to stunning black and white photographs.
While many cameras offer built in support for shooting in black and white -- and any image editing program worth its salt can perform a standard grayscale conversion -- simply desaturating a color image can often produce a flat and boring black and white conversion.
Silver Efex Pro gives you the tools you need to bring life to your monochromatic visions. It can simulate several types of colored lens filters, and can emulate many popular black and white film stocks -- including popular films by Ilford and Kodak!
You'll also be able to add borders to your images -- perfect for wedding shooters and fine art photographers alike. You can selectively restore color to an object, making it visually pop out of the rest of the image. Dynamic brightness and soft contrast adjustment allow you to perfect the look and feel of your images. Thanks to a powerful history browser you will be free to experiment with all the tools the software provides -- there is no adjustment that you can make to an image that cannot be easily undone.
Silver Efex Pro 2 is compatible with the following host applications: Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended, Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, Adobe Photoshop Elements 7, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.6, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3.x, Apple Aperture 2.1.4, and Apple Aperture 3.x.

I hesitated for a while before buying this, wondering, 'Can I do things with it that I can't do with Photoshop? Is it really worth the price?' Then I tried out the trial version... Time after time, I would load an image into Silver Efex, thinking that it was fine as was, and probably wouldn't be improved significantly by using the program. But every time, the resulting image was either somewhat better than before, or (in most cases) considerably better - virtually a whole new image! It allows you to really get into an image and 'interpret it.' You do this through the excellent selection of presets, plus a rich array of controls over highlights, shadows, midtones, structure, contrast, toning and other goodies, such image borders and film grain.Yes, you will play and have fun with it, but it's more than a toy...in the hands of the right photographer, this software can improve the quality of your images and thus the saleability of your images. So as you can tell, I ended up buying it, and have been happily using it ever since. As a final note, I recommend getting this from B&H [...]it's much cheaper than on Nik's own website.

This tool will allow the artist to create wonderful black and white images and includes a large suite of presets to kick-start the creative process. It has a few drawbacks, however. First, rendering is painfully slow for any change made to a full size TIFF image. Because rendering is slow, so is navigation, since that requires re-rendering. There is a loupe, but that is not very helpful and seems not to faithfully render even the small sample. When you bring an image back into Photoshop it takes five or more minutes to fully display the new layer in black and white and that often crashes the Photoshop display, so that the only way you know it works is that it shows up in the Navigator. I have 8Gb of memory and a 4-processor system, so I'm pretty sure it's not my machine, which displays most Photoshop updates instantly. All that said, I will keep using it, since the images it creates are really not easy to duplicate using any other tool I've tried and they ARE beautiful.

Comments about Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 Software:
Silver Efex Pro 2 is an incredible software product. It is easy to adapt to, and the manner in which one may edit specific aspects of an image without affecting others is very impressive. The only issue that I've had with it thus far concerns the toning selection, for which many options are provided: so many of them look so great I have a difficult time choosing! (and should I need to clarify: this is not a complaint).

Comments about Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2 Software:
I actually don't own V2, just V1. I've really been impressed by what it can do, and the ability to focus on specific areas of the image and manipulate is great. So you can darken and cut contrast in one area, do something completely different in another. I always use as a smart object in Photoshop so I can go back and tweak my work- otherwise it's lost.My gripe- within a year of my buying V1, they came out with V2. The upgrade was almost $1- most companies would offer a free, or heavily discounted, upgrade if you had purchased that recently. Great free tutorials, strong product, but if you're not a pro hard to justify the initial, and upgrade, costs.

I'm just now getting into the flow of using Silver Efex Pro 2 software. It is, without a doubt, a great B&W conversion tool. Much more intuitive to use, in my mind, than Lightroom or Photoshop. My only critique is that it lacks the capability to import RAW files. One has to use JPEG or TIFF, etc. to import photos into the software.

I wanted this software SO badly from the day I discovered it. I ran home the day it arrived at my door, installed it and...... NOTHING.It crashes Elements 9 whenever I try to load SEP2, and when I try to use it through Lightroom 4, zilch, nada.... nothing happens. I guess I should be happy that at least it doesn't make LR4 crash, right?I called tech support, sat on the phone LITERALLY for 2.5 hours on a Friday night, and the guy tried every trick in the book and NOTHING worked. He gathered some info about my computer and told me he'd get back to me. That was 4 days ago, and I've heard not a word from tech support since then. I'm so glad I spent[$] on NOTHING.It must be Vista, since I've seen it work on other people's computers just fine. There, I'm done ranting.

Silver Efex Pro 2 used to restore old family photos from thousands of faded prints and negatives. Tools provided with application enable outstanding results more so than with any other application I have used over the years. NIK webinars are a great help in learning how to use the software. Software installs seamlessly with Adobe Photoshop 10.
There are no significant negatives. That said, NIK might provide some additional guidance in how to extract the optimal benefit from each of the sliders and tools contained in the application. Webinars help but are limited in their capacity to cover the expansive number of tools in the package.

I haven't been happy with my attempts at converting my colour images to black and white inside of Lightroom 3. I bought Silver Effects Pro based on numerous blog posts and podcasts from photography experts that swear by this software. The first image I converted was one that I have been struggling with for a long time. I liked it but it just didn't have the punch I wanted. Within 15 minutes I had an image I was so happy with I printed it, framed it and hung it on the wall of my office. Give this a try with the 15 day free trial from Nik. You'll be buying it too.
