I use the PA301W for photo editing, print proofing, and software development work. The gamut and tonality of this monitor is astounding; it's clearly head and shoulders above mass-market 27-30" displays I've used (e.g. those from Dell, HP) for those who require a display for professional imaging applications.
This display has a number of features targeting the professional user that I've not seen touted elsewhere: The included MultiProfiler software allows for complete control of the monitor's capabilities via a native (Mac, PC) application. This eliminates the need to navigate the display's built-in menu system, which is a chore on virtually any monitor. The display has Picture-in-Picture (PIP) capability and can share its USB device ports between two host computers. Graphic and software designers will appreciate color vision modes that simulate each of the various kinds of color blindness.
This model includes the SpectraView II software and an NEC-specific version of the Eye One spectrophotometer. The monitor has a self-calibration mode, which allows for calibration using just the Eye One and no external software. Imaging professionals will generally prefer to create calibrated profiles using the SpectraView II application. Calibration runs are at least as straightforward as with any other calibration system (e.g. those from Datacolor) I've used previously.
One note: if you are planning on using this with a Macbook Pro (esp. Early 2011 or later) or other device using a mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt connection, you'll want to pick up the NEC PA-MDP-CABL cable; this is a direct mini DisplayPort to full-size DisplayPort cable, no adapter dongle needed. I'll futher note that I did NOT have success connecting to the PA301W's DVI connection using an Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter.

... there were no quality control issues. My panel had terrible uniformity problems and even when turning the Digital Uniformity Compensation to maximum the color was unacceptable. On a grayscale there was a point where the highlights go from neutral to pink/magenta to green and back to neutral (between 224 and 238). I also own the PA271W and had to exchange it four times though NEC till I received an acceptable panel. Once I got my good panel I have been really happy with this product. Can't see much diference between the NEC PA271W and my Eizo CG234W.

I replaced an older Apple 30" Cinema Display with the PA301W, and the difference in image quality is remarkable. If you're considering this monitor, you will not be disappointed.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA301W 30" Widescreen Color-Critical Desktop LCD Monitor with SpectraView II:
This is a great monitor for my Lightroom and Photoshop work. I am a fulltime professional photographer. My niche is managing the process from image capture through the finished print. The piece that I was missing was a wide gamut monitor and this NEC fills that gap perfectly. I could immediately see colors that I couldn't see on my older Samsung 21" monitor. I am now using a dual monitor setup with the photo editing on the new NEC and my regular office apps on the old monitor. I bought the model with the colorimeter and it matches my Epson 7900 print output. It was easy to use. This monitor works great!

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA301W 30" Widescreen Color-Critical Desktop LCD Monitor with SpectraView II:
Very accurate colors. SpectraView makes the profiling task easy. It's also nice to be able to switch between different usages of the monitor. For example you can have a low brightness setup with a wide gamut for photo editing and then switch to a brighter setup with a narrow gamut for more general web browsing.
I wish the screen had a higher pixel density and different surface. It looks rough compared to the Retina Macbook Pro.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA301W 30" Widescreen Color-Critical Desktop LCD Monitor with SpectraView II:
This is an expensive monitor. But I don't mind expense when there is value received. The color fidelity is excellent and the provided software and calibration device are easy to use. The matte screen is far superior to glossy screens. Reflections are minimized, allowing you to focus on the image unimpeded. It is heavy but adjusts up and tilts fairly easily. My only nit is that the USB ports in back are hard to get to. There is one on the right edge. My preference is that they all be on the edge.

The profiling with Spectraview is very easy. It does only work on NEC monitors. I haven't compared the monitor to others and just purchased based on reviews, but I have no complaints. I replaced a five year old 30" HP monitor which was one of the best of its time and this one is better. The only negative comment is that I wish it had more usb ports. There are only two for outgoing. My old one had four.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA301W 30" Widescreen Color-Critical Desktop LCD Monitor with SpectraView II:
First the monitor. I went through 3 of them before receiving one that was acceptable.
The first had a very loud buzzing sound and unacceptable backlight bleed. The buzzing was loud enough for the B&H customer rep to hear it over the phone.
The 2nd, well the 2nd showed up yellow lines down the middle of the screen. very low buzzing though and good uniformity
The 3rd had again, a very loud bussing, huge white bleed on the entire right side (personally I think the device was compressed at one point) and 4 dead pixels.
The forth is just right. Buzzing still there but more than acceptable (I would expect buzzing with a monitor of this type but if it's louder than lets say a 1200 RPM PC fan on full then it's unacceptable in my book, at least for this price)
When delivered to spec the monitor is beautiful. it's just plain pathetic that nec would allow monitors at this price range to leave the factory with such significant issues. As for the one I have now, VERY uniform, low buzzing, awesome color.
If it wasn't for the quality issues I would give it 5 stars.
As for B&H,,, they TOTALLY rule. I am a VERY patient person and never got on them for the first 3 monitors, The way I see it,, So is life! What I have to say is that without fuss they handled the returns with no hesitations. They were Wonderful to work with, and left me with a level of confidence that I never had with an online store. I highly recommend them as they took excellent care of me. Thank you B&H!

What else is there left to say than agreeing with all the 5 stars reviews below.
Calibrating is easy, contrast is amazing, colors are exceptionally brilliant, just love it.
One thing I would like to mention is the non glare screen. No reflections whatsoever which makes it very comfy for your eyes if you're spending a lot of time on front of your screen.
If you are a Photoshop user this is a 'must have'!
And if you have doubts, like I had, about the size don't think any longer and go for the 30" display. It's worth the extra bucks.

I use in on a daily basis to do color managed photo editing work. Awesome monitor. Color calibration is spot on. I highly recommend getting the version with the Spectraview II calibrator - since it is integrated at the hardware level.
The integrated KVM is a big plus - since 3rd party KVMs supporting 2560x1600 is pretty pricey and bulky.

Bought to use with my Photoshop work. Use off a Mac Mini Server. Excellent in every way. Make sure you have good ventilation. Gets a little warm. Be very careful about what cord you use to hook up to your computer. In my case I must use the Mini display port to display port cable. As far as I can tell if you do not have the NEC BRAND THE MONITOR MAY NOT COME OUT OF SLEEP MODE. It's a know issue with after market cords. So check before you buy the cord. Using the Thunderbolt port with a Mini display port was the only way to get the highest resolution the monitor could support. But WOW once its set up its great.

As others have mentioned this is a wonderful display to use and runs much cooler then the mac 30" cinema display I was using prior to this one. I also love being able to adjust the height to a more comfortable viewing position.
I did have a problem with the first unit shipped to me, out of the box it had one dead pixel and one red pixel. I contacted B & H and they promptly replaced it with with one that worked properly. I was super happy with how fast and stress free the entire exchange process went.

Comments about NEC MultiSync PA301W 30" Widescreen Color-Critical Desktop LCD Monitor with SpectraView II:
I bought this monitor for image editing and it works great for that. The main problem I have is that the included calibration software is Win/Mac only and I use Linux. I can use argyllcms and dispcalgui for calibration and profiling under Linux which works well but I loose the access to the internal in-monitor hardware calibration, which is one of it's selling points.
Also, the plastic(?) protection shield in front of the screen is a bit loose and rattles a little. This should not be happening at this price level.
Other than that I have no complains. The image quality, contrast, color reproduction are all excellent. Price is high but in general commensurate with quality.
