This is the most convenient and well designed portable recorder suspension solution I could find on the net, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone opting to use an external recordable with a 1/4" mounting thread for their dSLR audio needs. The lyres virtually eliminate any shock noise and the whole unit is very well made. However, it's [$]! That is a ton of money for something made of plastic that probably cost $5 when it was made in Thailand or Hong Kong. If it were $50 I'd say it was worth it, but [$] is outrageous. But that's just the way pro-photo mark up works. You're basically paying for the convenience as no other company (Opteka, Neewer, etc.) has come out with anything similar for less. If you are doing pro-audio with your recorder and need a good shock mount, I say go for this one, but be prepared to shell out cash.-David Schwittek, [@]

Achieves much of what it was made to do. The suspension system is made of tough flexible plastic that cuts some vibration, but not all. Rubber would be better. There is still noticeable vibrations noise being carried to the recorder if hand-holding. Maybe atop camera it improves. Simply, the material of the suspension is not vibration dampening enough. Secondly, and very irritatingly, it mounts the recorder with a screw but the screw easily comes unwound, risking, if one is not vigilant, the recorder falling to the ground. In the field, working under pressure, this rig is not user-freindly or reliable. That said, if you are careful using it, and don't have high expectations, you will probably be happy with it.

Comments about Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension:

For such an expensive and specialized item, it is strangely carelessly put together. The first copy I got had one slightly loose screw which produced an audible rattle that took a while to diagnose.

Next, the tilting mechanism is so terribly designed that I'd rather not have it. Whoever designed it didn't take into account the weight of a Zoom H4n or comparable recorder. Out of the box, tilting the camera even slightly down would cause my H4n to flop down on its face and come to rest on the lens. Even after tightening the hex screw that controls the friction on this mechanism with all my might, I have to orient the Rycote on the hot-shoe in such a way that tilting the camera up or down does not put any strain on this joint.

All that said, if you're able to get around the above issues, it does its basic job, that of reducing handling noise, very well. I used to use a flash bracket to mount my camera and Zoom H4n, and after using the Rycote I now realize how much of a near-constant low-frequency rumble I was getting before.

Comments about Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension:

This product does what it is supposed to do and keeps the noise very low, but it has a couple of quirks. One being that the screw that holds the recorder has nothing (other than friction) to keep it from falling out. another is the screw that supposed to tighten the pivoting arm. It is a Phillips screw and a locking nut that does nothing so i changed it to a hex head. that being said it is worth the money.

Comments about Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension:

I use the shock mount mainly for my H6, side mounted on a monopod, top mounted with my camera.
The shock mont did quite well, vibration isolation is acceptable.
Enough for supporting my intention of taking Live recording from band show.
The most annoying is the top screw (with a locking nut) , without any mechanism to trap it and secure it in place, the nut will unwound and gone off, if it is not locking something in place.

My unit is has the locking nut gone off from my 1st day of use !

Used to hold Zoom H6 on Nikon D800. Works as expected with appropriate reduction in noise from handling the camera. Seems sturdy for molded plastic. Agree with other reviewers that this is pricey for what it is, but few discreet or non-bulky alternatives are available.

Comments about Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension:

Rycote Lyre suspensions have proven very popular for attaching mics to boompoles and pistol grips, so it's great to have the same technology available when using the built-in mics on small flash recorders. The internal mics on many of the recorders from Sony, Tascam and Zoom are quite good, but handling noise is always a challenge. Being able to isolate the recorder body from finger thumps and scrapes, and even from vibrations transmitted through a tripod or other stand, makes those built-in mics even more effective. This recorder suspension does a good job, and can be easily attached to a camera shoe, a standard photo tripod, or a standard pistolgrip or boompole mount. The only down-side I found was that the threaded stud connecting the recorder to the mount can creep too far in either direction - falling below the plate, or coming free from the tightening knob below.

Comments about Rycote 041119 Portable Recorder Suspension:

It effectively neutralizes handling and vibration sounds that used to be picked up by my sound recorder. It is also MUCH stronger than it looks, so much so the lyre can be twisted completely the wrong way and it still won't break. Unbelievable!!

Attaching my recorder to the suspension isn't as straight forward as I had thought. I have to remove the 1/4-20 thread from the top, screw it to my recorder, reinsert the thread through the suspension top hole, and then screw in the locking ring from the bottom. I had thought the thread and locking ring were a captive one-piece screw to make attaching/detaching devices easier.

This is an effectively designed shockmount for use on portable recorders like the Tascam DR-40. But the materials used to construct it seem really cheap. Unfortunately there isn't currently a better one out there and so we are all kind of stuck paying for the good design but cheap materials.

Keep in mind that the sounds from focusing and dial clicking doesn't disappear, since its picking up the pure audio, but the handling noise is diminished.

I use this suspension for my Sony PCM M10 with a foam hand grip. It attaches easily and is a good solution for eliminating handling noise with portable recorders.

I recently took this rig on a hiking trip and got some great source. It is small enough that I could stow the whole package in a fanny pack without breaking it down in between recordings. It also has a strain relief clip for your headphone cable that cuts down on rustling if you need to move around while recording. The plastic suspension and cable clip look like they won't last forever, but for the price, I'm satisfied with what it is.

I bought this to mount my Zoom H4n to a 7D and to a boom pole. I was worried the lyre system wouldn't provide enough support when the H4n is on the end of a boom pole, but it did a great job! It effectively eliminates any sounds coming through the camera or boom pole.

It is a little pricey...but it does a very good job!

use product as backup equipment. Use it on extention pole and pn small table tripod. Works well enough with up to six inch mics or recording units.
