I feel badly that the other reviewer of this product didn't have a good experience. Perhaps they received a faulty piece? After reading their review, I hesitated about buying the Yin-Yang, but I thought I'd risk it because after much internet searching, it was the only device that fit my needs. I have an iMac with one FireWire 800 port. My external hard drive is also an 800 port, but my Panasonic video camera has a DV/400 cable. I bought a DV/800 cable to import video, but to do so I would have to eject my external drive (thus stopping my Time Machine backups). I just got done connecting my Yin-Yang and gave it a test run. My external hard drive has successfully backed up via the 800 connector and my video camera has successfully imported footage via the 400 connector. It works for me and I couldn't be happier with it. Excellent!

From the product description, this hub would have been a real blessing - allowing me to keep my FW800 hard-drive and FW400 Canon Scanner on-line at all times without dismounting drives and swapping cables. However, when I connected everything up, the scanner might as well have been turned off. In repeated trials including dismounting the hard-drive, I was never able to get my MacBook Pro to recognize that the scanner was available. It wasn't until I disconnected the hub and connected the scanner via the old FW800-FW400 cable that it came back to life.

TOO BAD IT DIDN'T PAN OUT.

While it cost a bit more than I was hoping to spend, after a lot searching this was the best option for allowing me to run my external FW800 drives along with my FW400 audio interface. It wasn't that clear but I did see somewhere that this device allowed both ports to operate at their optimum speed and I can confrim that the 400 port is working at 400 speed and the 800 port is working at 800 speed.

Comments about Sonnet Yin-Yang Firewire 800 to Firewire 400/800 Mini Hub:

I do not see this device as a solution but as a stop/gap for those of us who need it. The reason I bought this drive is I have an iMac with one FW80 port. A real solution would be the ability to have a FW400 port separate from the FW800 port. The iMac does not allow that as far as I know. When I can afford it I will have to replace my legacy drives with FW800 or Thunderbolt. This neat little hub will keep me going in the meantime.

I have a lot of "legacy" FW400 drives, plus one FW800 drive and one FW800 camcorder connection. The hub has enabled me to use all these devices without issue.

This was an excellent idea but it just doesn't work like advertised. I was able to get FW400 and FW800 hard drives to work, but they take turns reading and writing. I bought this product to connect the FW400 to my Mackie mixer and the FW800 port to my hard drives. Again, when the hard drives were in use, the audio flow paused.

Bottom line: Sonnet needs to ditch this product and replace it with a Thunderbolt to FW400/FW800 adapter.
