Here's the REAL DEAL....it is SMOOTH when you pan up and down. It is Smooth when you pan left and right.. It can hold a LOT OF WIEGHT...the carbon fiber sticks that come with the KIT are AWSOME....they can be used as a temporary homeless shelter or a toll booth if need be.. that's how high it goes. But the problem when you pan diagonally....thats when you notice what the difference is when compared to the SATCHLERS. Not BUTTERY SMOOTH AT ALL.....Dont get me wrong.....you will get professionally good looking results ..just don't pan diagonally. There's a saying I keep hearing that someone told me....buy a satchler dv10 ....keep it FOREVER....forever ever? EVER EVER? Yes....FOREVER

Comments about Manfrotto 509HD Professional Video Head:

This ia a solid tripod head for the price. I have been using the 504HD and this is just an upsized version of the same, I upgraded due to weight of the Blackmagic URSA plus follow focus, matte box etc. made the smaller heads unstable and worrisome. Although this is not a light tripod head, the percentage weight to camera & equipment is about the same as before. This has proven to be a good fit for me.

Nothing beats a vin tent but I've had a whole bunch of luck with my 516 from manfrotto. This was supposed to replace it but doesn't even come close. The pan friction (despite being continuously adjustable) goes from just a bit to almost full on in less than a click. The whole thing aint too good.

Comments about Manfrotto 509HD Professional Video Head:

Tripod heads are one of those things that cost more than the camera you put on them... at least if you want a really good one. This is one of the better low cost ones (where "low cost" is relative).

I do not like it that the quick plate is built in since I like to use the Kessler Quick Release system. So I have to stack a quick release system on top of their quick release plate. But it works.

The fluid mechanism is pretty good at this price point. And for most applications it'll be fine. You'll need to spend a lot more to get any better.

The auto-balance system is not really what it seems. You have to balance it manually and then the system will record that position to help you return the camera to that spot later. Which, given the way rigs can change and adjust is something that gets no use from me.

The counterbalance is finiky like every counter balance I've used.

Comments about Manfrotto 509HD Professional Video Head:

I purchased this head to go with my Acebil legs. I have been very pleased in the weeks since I received it. Panning and tilting is very smooth, the counterbalance feature has already saved my camera a couple of times and the balance recorder is a MASSIVE time saver.

The head feels a little heavy compared to the tripod I had before, but I actually like the wait as it helps reduce vibrations.

I am a novice but had no trouble figuring out (and following illustrations) as to how to use this with a cobra crane and a Manfrotto Sympla matte rig. It is heavy enough without being too heavy for one person to move. Quality throughout.
