In Photo mode, the MH055M8-Q5 head offers free movement in all directions just like a typical ball head. Equipped with fluid cartridges and an adjustable counter balance control, the tripod head provides precise, smooth, and controlled movement.

Ignore all the miswritten negative reviews you see around here, whoever wrote them never read the instructions. First, the video handle works for both left and right hands you simply have to flip it from one side to the other. There is no reason to lose any of the camera screws if you dont need the large one just leave it threaded in the hole. It gets it out of the way and keeps the smaller screw from falling out....DUH. The Neck that holds the camera has ZERO flex, in fact it could probably hold 3 times the heads rated weight without any strain. It doesnt have 2 knobs for locking perpendicular and up and down movement, the little one is the friction control, the big one is the lock, RTFM please! No its not as simple to use as a simple ball head but unlike ballhead it will hold the biggest DSLR with an 8lb 300mm nikon lens in any angle or any wierd orientation you wish. For video mode it pans and moves up and down superbly smoothly. The counterweight feature is excellent to maintain your vidoe camera "light" on the mount. The fact is, its simply spectacular for both video and photo very strongly recommended. If you need to mount a 50 pound HD video camera this is not for you, but its not meant to be either. Lastly a little advice for those "proffesionals" that write silly reviews, before you review something please know how to operate the device, a good place to start is to read the manual, its only 4 pages.....Sheesh

The product came yesterday and after testing it out, I'm sending it back. I come from a video production background and I have recently, within this past year, started to do more photography. I thought this was a great concept being able to utilize both since I do shoot both at times.

Unfortunately, the product excels from a photo standpoint, but the video side is very poor when compared to other heads such as the 501 or 504. The pan bar is very flimsy and seems to get in the way of the head when tilting. You have to use a flat head screwdriver or quarter to change the position of the pan handle. This is very inconvenient as they easily could have incorporated an adjustable lever.

Once you get into your motion of panning or tilting, the overall smoothness is great, but starting your move it's not smooth and the friction levels do not change much.

If this is a start of newer products to come from this, I'll be looking forward to seeing what they come out with next.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

This product is the solution to the problem for shooters of both stills and video. For years I trucked two tripods from job to job because my superior video tripod with fluid head locked my camera down well for horizontal images, but when I needed to switch to vertical shooting, it was a no go and I had to switch to the stills tripod. I'm pleased that this head simply replaces my Fluid 501 video head on the great Manfrotto tripod legs and I now have ONE tripod that performs exceedingly well for both horizontal and vertical stills, as well as for fluid video. Thank you, Manfrotto.

Some comments are correct in pointing out that the fastening clip, release plate, and camera can sometimes conflict when locking down. It takes only a little experimenting to suss out proper placement and you are good to go.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

Excelente producto.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

I bought this tripod head thinking I wont be needing to change tripods while shooting video and taking photos, or that I would be able use the same tripod for both photo and video, and boy was I wrong.
I would suggest to chip in a bit more and get a good Video Tripod Head, a fluid one, and also buy a dedicated photo tripod head to do photography.
This one is no good for either one. It falls short on both unless, maybe, if you are using it as an entry level one.
This tripod head is good for jerky video on pans and tilts and taking much longer to get it somehow right, and then straight to the stabilizer software. When using it to do photography you'll get frustrated all the same but on its own unique way.
I hope I save somebody some money and time. Invest somewhere else.

I wish it would close down with a tripod to a slightly more compact size, as it's a pain to have to unscrew the handle when packing up, but otherwise, this works great for photography and for video.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

On paper this seemed like a good solution for a video tripod head that was compact and sturdy. It started out great, but after a few hours of shooting lacrosse games, the plate that attaches the head to the tripod came loose and the camera began to wobble. It got progressively worse. I looked to see if it could be tightend with no luck. I emailed Manfrotto asking if there was a way to tighten the plate. It took three days to get a response that I should return it to their service department. Instead, I contacted B&H and they quickly accepted a return with full refund. I have other Manfrotto products and I'm happy with all of them. I think this one has a design problem.

I bought this head because I didn't want to try and change heads while in the middle of a shoot. I am adding video to my architecture work and this is the only head on the market for both. Take a moment to learn to use it. Forget the fact that it is heavy. i have a large and sturdy tripod to begin with so the weight is really no different than my regular photo tripod head. It takes a little getting used to using a ball head and I will admit that the arm is in the way but all in all it worked as advertised. The transition from Photo to Video was seamless. Had I t do it again this is the one I would buy.

It is a great product for portrait and wedding work. The fluid movements are very smooth and can be used for stills and video in that mode. the tightening plate screw is not designed DSLRs, since the camera may sit over the screw handle and the screw is blocked by the camera. I replaced the screw with a hex head screw so I can still hand tighten, but it fits under the camera. It is not a good head for commercial work, where you need subtle adjustments. I have two for different tripod.

I don't know why people hate on this head so much. The only complaints I have are the weight which I already knew before I purchased it and, It would be nice to have a lock on angle when switching from portrait to video also the switch which does this feels flimsy at best the last 2 complaints are what got this 4 stars.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

I bought this tripod head thinking it would be the best way to combine photography and video with a DSLR.

But I should have trust some of the previous reviews out there.

2 main issues with this head.

                          1. The quick release locking knob bumps in the DSLR body when you try to mount the camera in the center of the head which makes it impossible to lock in this position. To actually lock the camera in place, the plate needs to be moved quite a bit forward. This is not a huge deal, but it means you cant adjust the balance of the camera by moving the plate back and forth. There is only a forward mounting position. Now this can be fixed using a rising plate between the camera body and the QR plate.

                          2. The pan handle. Well its flimsy. With a bit of tension on the drag, you might actually notice the handle flex before the pan. Manfrotto decided to use a mechanisme for this arm that made it unusable for me. Having to use a coin to adjust the angle of the arm was still acceptable, but no matter who much I tightened it, the arm kept on rotating in the socket. This part of the tripod looks like its experimental and shouln't have made it on the shelve. I returned this head to B&H especially because of this bad pan arm mechanism.

The other thing about this arm is that, yes, you can unmount the arm and mount it the other way around so it becomes a right hand pan arm, but then you end up facing the face of the head and you lose sight of the bubble levels, the photo/video lever , the pretty rulers are backwards and all the control are now backwards. That is not the same as just moving the handle from one side to the other, its reversing the whole unit.

I think this head is a nice step towards a new generation of hybrid pan heads, but its not there yet. As for the pan and tilt action, I can't say I pushed my tests too much this way, my pan handle kept on swinging so... I just sent it back.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

I wanted to get a proper video head like a Miller or Sachtler however they are quite expensive and having a 75mm bowl mount, meant that I would also have the expense of upgrading my tripod which has a screw mount for heads. I thought that this product might suit as I needed a pan tilt head with a payload of 7kg for a 600mm f4 lens and head for traditional use with smaller lenses without carrying two separate heads. With the big lens on there is a fair bit of play between moving the camera/lens and the movement of the head. Neither the pan or tilt is totally fluid when supporting 7kg, it is a little sticky. I understand that the tensioning knobs are on the right hand side because your left hand is on the pan bar, howver I don't use the pan bar so I would prefer the knobs to be on the left hand side so I can keep my right hand on the camera shutter button (just my preference). Use with smaller lenes is better however I find that even with the friction wound right out, the pan tilt action can still be a bit stiff to move into position quickly, the movement into the portrait position is fine. This stiffness may reduce after some use. I also have a Manfrotto 701 HDV head which is far smoother even though it is not designed for the payload I need. All in all the head is acceptable as a multi function head. I knew that it would not be as good as a dedicated Video or Photo head, however due to the price and dual functionality I was prepared to sacrifice a bit of performance.

A top notch piece of equipment. very adjustable and rock solid stable. In the photo mode, the tripod head rotates smoothly up and dow, right and left and tilts. In the movie mode the head will not tilt. If you only take photos or only shoot video you may find a tripod head that doesn't have this ability to switch modes for less money. I'd certainly stick with Manfrotto. If you do both, you won"tt go wrong with this one.

Comments about Manfrotto MH055M8-Q5 Photo-Movie Tripod Head With Q5 QR Plate:

I've switched to this head after wearing out my old 229 Super Pro Head. As I've recently switched to a 5D MkIII (from a 1D MkIV) and I shoot some video with it and with a regular video camera the MH055M8-Q5 looked like a good option with its dual capabilities.
                                  In theory it is.
In practice I've found it quite an expensive let down.
I have to say with all of the Manfrotto gear I've owned over the years this is the first that I've felt was really a poorly designed product.
In camera mode the problems start when you try to mount your DSLR, and it's this issue that I just can't believe they have allowed as a design fault, to lock the camera in place and stop the plate from sliding around in the head you have to wind in a small knob. Only one problem. If you attach the DSLR normally to the plate (in the middle) and then mount the camera on the head this locking knob cannot be turned as it is obstructed by the camera body. The camera has to be at the back of the plate and then can only be mounted balanced to the rear of the head for you to tighten the locking knob. The problem when you do this is that it often doesn't engage the automatic locking clip that secures your camera. So you have a choice - have your camera sliding around in the head or have it potentially not locked in so it could fall out... like I said, bad design.
The second major issue is the dual adjustment 'dial' or knob (the knob within the knob) for adjusting from landscape through to portrait.
These two knobs have an inexplicable degree of control over both the friction and movement through the adjustments to portrait AND the tilt operation of the head. The result is that it's very difficult to make a quick, intuitive and smooth adjutsment to portrait mode. You find yourself either having the head set too tight and dragging it through or having it too loose & it suddenly clunk down all the way by itself. As there is no handle to adjust this movement you have to push your camera body around to make the adjustments.
In video mode than head works very well.
So in short if you shoot much more video than than stills then this is your head.
If you're 50/50 or do more stills work than video then avoid it. You'll be disappointed.

I travel extensively shooting commercial photo and video. Thi is a very useful tool. It keeps my gear a bit more compact even though its a fairly large and heavy head on its own. Well machined and very smooth. Its better for video than for photo however. Its a little slow to use and not as practical for quick ballhead adjustments like my other Manfrotto 468 head-so a little patience is needed. Still very happy with my purchase.
