Ideal for filmmakers, journalist and musicians!

The sound of quality, build quality, innovated and simple control over operation makes this model one of the best choice for anyone who need a great sound and can appraise it!

    Remarks :

    1. Sound quality.

The sound from microphone is incredible clear and high! One of the best sound from digital recorder in medium-high class. There is a little bit noise, but in normal level. I tested a lot of digital recorders from this class like Zoom H2 and even one step up class Tascam DR100, Zoom H4n and this model has same level of sound and a little bit high then DR100 and H4n, 20% higher than H4n. It has more good sound quality than Zoom H2n, due to better quality portable microphones!

    * In my opinion the sound it's more strong than H4n, which is soft but it's more low!

The two build microphones have same quality of sound like one video professional lavalier in price range 150-250$. The microphones are very sensitive and in most cases when you moved you will fell it, because you need a windscreen! It'e easy to mount it on camcorder and dslr to get high prof. movie sound! The musicians will be never disappoint with DR-07mkII too.

    4.5 points for sound quality

    2. Menu, innovate control,Internal sound software, reliable Media design, built quality.

The menu-including basic operation is simple and easy for use. You can easy turn on and record sound. The control over operation is perfect . Design is attract and nice. Would like to a little bit small size with same great design. The rec settings give you good control like rec level and auto auto level. Integrated software give you some effects, but here I expected more innovation! The DR-07mkII records only to microSD or microSDHC flash memory cards, next up model offer using of more widely-available SD or SDHC cards. Quality of used materials is good and much better than direct competitor Zoom H2, but I want want more from used materials. Lamps-diode of records is imperceptibly!

    4.5 points

    3. Basic equipment, accessories.

The basic equipment have everything which you need it for basic used, but it would be a big plus if the managers would including some accessories like simple mount screw to mount it on camcorder or dslr and so important windscreen! Tascam not provide professional case for this amazing recorder, which is big minus. Developing of pro case for wide usage in different circumstance to facilitate. No available choice for different color

    4.2 points

Conclusion: Tascam DR-07mkII is absolute leader in middle professional class and offer amazing entry level for filmmakers, musicians, journalists and education.

Bought the DR-07 mk2 to improve the sound quality when DSLR filming. The functionality is fairly simple and the sound quality is excellent. Unfortunately the build quality is really cheap. The mic-in and line-out mini jacks are the worst part. I've had two of these units, on one unit the mic-in mini jack port was faulty so I get a hum when using an external mic. On the other the headphone jack broke after very slight fall <2ft. Customer service from Tascam has been terrible.

Very easy to set up and use. I only wish the sound level on playback was louder. I find myself using earbuds to listen to the playback to hear every nuance I am listening for. great for basic listening, but for serious discerning listening, you need earbuds.

Great price on this really feature filled product.
The video explaining differences was a help as well. Using product to record music and voice lessons and am really impressed with the quality of the audio and the simple interface. A perfect size design as well.

Comments about Tascam DR-07mkII Portable Digital Audio Recorder:

I've been using the DR-07 for stand alone recording in a variety of settings and have been consistently impressed with the results.I started with interview type, spoken word where the audio is clear and crisp. I recorded a jazz trio in a loud cafe from their tip jar table and got great sound including excellent left right separation evident in the recording. Most recently I recorded my sons elementary school band in the gym/cafeteria and the sound was clean and captured the full range of instruments well.I debated between this machine and the Zoom H1, and ultimately decided to go with the Tascam for the additional on board file management and the ability to switch from A/B to X/Y microphone positions.

I'm still playing with it - but so far I'm really liking the nice compact size and low weight of this device. The tripod screw on the back is very useful and I"m using it instead of a tiny (and generally inferior mike on top of my nex-7. So as a replacement to an inside mike it seems to do the job quite well and having it as an independent audio recorder is a major plus. Seems very easy to set and use and the audio quality appears to be first rate.

My laptop input has a short in it causing a bad buzz when capturing audio, so I bought the Tascam DR-07 to record our church services using the same 3.5 mm cable coming off our processor right into the Tascam and it works perfectly. I love the fact that I can activate the AGC as well as set the limiter because it makes life easier when its time to edit. I added a 4 gig micro SD card and it does the what I need it to do with ease! I would recommend this product!

I was looking for a portable audio recorder to record quality sound. A friend has a M-audio Microtrack II, which is a decade old. M-audio doesn't make those anymore. Through my online search I came across the Tascam DR-07 MKII. It works like a charm. I also comes with a mount thread on the body; it directly mounts on my gorillapod.

Comments about Tascam DR-07mkII Portable Digital Audio Recorder:

Wireless dropouts make me crazy. Some of the locations I shoot at have so much RF traffic, wireless just does not work.

I found some old cellphone holsters that fit the DR-07. I put them on the talent and attach my Rode mic of choice for the situation. The DR-07 provides phantom power to the mics. Then, I just put the DR-07 into record, perform a sync clap and we are on our way. On camera mics are used for sync with their soundtracks discarded in edit.

The only drawback was realtime monitoring of the recording. I just had to have faith things were working. A GOgroove BlueSENSE TRM Bluetooth Audio Transmitter solved that problem. I attach one to the headset port and monitor with my cell phone bluetooth headset. I have two such rigs and simply use two bluetooth phone headsets to seperately monitor each. Its not perfect, there is a short delay in transmission, but its better than not monitoring at all. And, its a lot better than wireless dropouts. When the headphones are not being used on set, they are attached to my cell phone.

Wireless dropouts are in my past. And, when you add up the costs, this blows decent wireless gear away. If you cannot afford truly good wireless gear this is a setup you can. Do not bother with inexpensive wireless, its basically useless.

Comments about Tascam DR-07mkII Portable Digital Audio Recorder:

I bought a Tascam 424 MkII 4-track cassette recorder over ten years ago and loved it. This DR-07 does as much and more for me - in a tiny package. The sound quality of the built-in mics is very good. I've recorded guitar and vocals with it. The stereo image is pleasing and realistic. I love adjusting the sound simply by moving in relation to the mics, or moving the position of the unit.

The overdub feature is very important to me and works well. You can't mix individual tracks later, which is a limitation, but a good one. Retake if it isn't what you want. No hours and hours wasted mixing waveforms and tweaking. But you can add as many tracks as you like without any loss in sound quality. Each new track is simply added to the previous in a new recording. It's basically like bouncing tracks with a multi track cassette, recorder - except that there is no loss in sound quality with each successive bounce because each bounce is a digital copy.

The reverb sounds nice. I haven't tried plugging in an external mic yet, but don't really see a need to for most of what I do.

The main cons are that the unit has a less-than solid feel to it and that the menu is a bit tedious. It doesn't feel fragile, it just feels slightly cheaper than I expected. I handle it carefully. Also, when overdubbing, be careful to leave plenty of space at the beginning of your recording, otherwise the recorded noise of pushing the record button and touching the unit will really pile up near the beginning of the track. If you are only recording one track I think you can set it record to wait a few seconds after you push the button.

The menu is tedious simply because it is so small. It isn't difficult to navigate once you get the hang of it, but changing settings takes a few more button pushes than would be nice. But that's just part of the deal with a device this small I think.

I look forward to using this recorder a lot. I can take easily to my favorite pianos instead of hauling around a computer and a bunch of gear. I can surreptitiously record my music students and send recordings to their proud parents.

                        I reccomend this product.

I use this recorder (with a wind jammer) as a field biologist in winds up to 40 kph. The sound quality is fantastically clear. The recorder requires that the record button be pressed 2x to to start recording, which caused me to mess up my first few attempted recordings (because I only pressed the button 1x). However, my main complaint is that I can't figure out how to make use the folder function. When I created a new folder with the intention of filing some older recordings there, I could no longer see ANY of my files - yikes! They were there - I was able to download them onto my computer - but I could not see them on the recorder's screen. Very weird. Also, it doesn't seem like you can name the folders. Hence, this function is useless to me. Now, I just put recordings onto my computer right away and organize them there.

The DR line is pretty fragile. My DR-40 hit the carpet from two feet and it never worked again. I needed a less expensive product with basically the same functions. This fits the bill! It's also less bulky and easily fits into a back pocket if need be.

I sent this little recorder to a bunch of people that were in a telecon and we wanted better quality than the phone audio which stinks. I set it up and then sent it with simple instructions. The audio that came back was better than the audio I recorded in the room with a $400 min and a $200 recorder. Only drawback, no XLR but I didn't need that.

PRO--Good Sound quality. Good price. Compact. Helpful manual! Interface was sensible with useful reminders to change mode setting to match mic configuration. Tracking clip numbers prevented accidental overwrites.
CON--2 gig limit on SD card capacity. Had to frequently transfer files to make room on the small 2 gig card.
Would Recommend to friends--Have already done so!

DR-07MKII is a great audio solution for the compact VDSLR users who are suffering from cheezy audio quality of inter mics and preamps. The big advantages are limitter and peak reduction which are enable to control gain levels easily. If you have enough budget, DR-100MKII can be the optimum choice, but, within a low price range,I think DR-07MKII is the best product.
