The NAS can be scheduled for automatic power on and off to save energy when no data access is required

I'm coming to this product from another [...] targeted NAS product, a Promise SmartStore n4300. I'm not going to slag on the other product, but this one is much better. I haven't owned it long enough to see if it will succumb to hardware failures like the previous one did, but the features that I have used, as well as the interface in general are better. If I'm not mistaken, the device uses software RAID (not controller-based) so bulk file operations can be slower than it would be with a hardware solution (esp when using RAID 5). I like the built in integration with a cloud backup solution. That solution itself is a bit rough, but they could improve it with firmware updates. As a Mac user, the ability to use a portion of the storage as a TimeMachine backup is very nice. I haven't cracked 80% of what this thing can do, but it does the 20% of what I need very well.

I had purchased this NAS in order to backup Window's Laptop and my Mac Mini. After setting up the machine at home I had no issues getting my Laptop to recognize the NAS and utilize it for backup. However, after I started to work in setting up the NAS for my Mac I ran into issue after issue. I started to find several forums of which describes this as an inherent flaw of QNAP.

I had continued to persist after days of debugging with no avail so I called QNAPs tech support. After having two of their technician's look at the problems they still have not solved it. They had openly admitted that this has been an issue.

QNAP markets this product to work flawlessly with Mac's but be forewarned it does not.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:

Purchased this NAS for backup & extra storage for video editing business. It is marketed toward small business & residential users. It needs to come with a guidebook, however. And a more powerful setup tool or "NAS for Dummies" video to help those of us who don't live in or want to live in techland 24-7. It recognized discs from three different makers, sizes & types (SSD & HDD) without a hitch. But it did instantly configure RAID 5 without asking.
So far it is set up nicely but with some learning curve - I needed professional nerd assistance regarding specific uses & connection questions.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:

At the momment, I am using the QNAP as a media server. The setup of this hardware was very straight forward. After I installed the four 2T Western Digital Reds, the setup asked what RAID I wanted. The formatting and configuration was well guided. Uploaded the files took a little bit of effort compared to my old Patriot NAS but it wasn't difficult. Over all I am really pleased with it.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:

High quality construction and materials. Well documented. Software a breeze to use. Set up as NAS along with backup server. Backup software for Widows simple to install and works as expected. Time machine for the Macs also works with no hitches. Had unit out of box and running with four 3TB HDD in less than 30 minutes.

Set up as RAID 10. Very impressed with how well this entire package functions. A great deal of thought went into the user interface and it works! The unit has a great deal more to offer, but it fits my needs as a file server and backup device on RAID 10 perfectly. It runs cool uner heavy loads and is quiet.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:

The QNAP TS-412 is an awesome piece of machinary. I have had this thing up and running for 4 weeks now and so far it has handled everything that I can throw at it, with ease. There are many things that this server has to offer and I look forward to using it to all of it's advantages. I did have a hard time setting it up, but than again I'm not the the most tec savy. There is a big learning curve to this machines. You might need a friend or some technical assistance. Once up and running though, the TS-412 is an awesome tool that I'm enjoying. From backing up all my important data, to streaming data to anywhere in the house or accesing information from outside of the home. This thing has it all and more than I will probably ever use. Great buy, and would buy again.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:

Very solid. Very easy to configure. Very easy to use. I have not tried any of the built-in apps yet, but its core functionality as a NAS is perfect. Works perfectly with our Mac and Windows machines. Drive access is a little access compared to some other comparable models, but for our light use it works just fine.

Using as a network server. Well made unit. Very challenging to use and access.

Other network devices are much easier to incorporate in my network.

Comments about Qnap TS-412 Turbo NAS Server:
