This is a beautifully made accessory. It feels solid, and the optics are clear. Because it's mounted above the lens, it isn't exactly accurate for close shots but it's fine for portraits or street shooting, for example. Unfortunately, it does add to the bulk of the camera enough that I don't use it very much. I don't think that's necessarily a con of the GV-1 but rather just the design of the GR. Oh well!

I use this with my GRD4. I've not had either very long. (I LOVE the camera!)

It's nice to have a viewfinder I can hold up to my eye instead of always being forced to hold the camera out in front of me to frame a shot. The GV-2 is only for the 28mm lens where as this GV-1 shows you a lot and has optical framing for both the 21 and 28 mm lenses. But with the 21 mm lens in place the GV-1 viewfinder has much of the lower part of the frame blocked by the physical presence of the lens sticking out there, so you can't see what is in the bottom of the frame.

Another issue is that it is offset above and slightly to the right (to allow clearance for the pop-up flash) of the lens. This means that the framing will be off for any close objects in the frame. Of course this is going to be an issue with ANY viewfinder, but it becomes more pronounced with such wide lenses.

Another issue I am concerned with is that there is no lens cap or other protection for this viewfinder, and since the lens on viewfinder extends out in front of the plastic housing, the lens is subject to being rubbed against in a case, your pocket, or if you were to lay it face down on a counter. At this price, one third the price of the entire camera, I don't want to scratch the thing up!

So I'm going to keep it, I think, but I'm not so sure that it is worth the money.

Comments about Ricoh GV-1 External Viewfinder:

This viewfinder is well made and an indispensible accessory for my GXR with either the Ricoh 28mm lens unit or the Leica Mount using the 15mm (effectively 22.5).
The fact that this viewfinder has framelines corresponding to both uses is very convenient.
With spectacles, it is a little hard to see the full 21mm field of view.
Very satisfied with this product (I have two now, for multiple GXR bodies.

Comments about Ricoh GV-1 External Viewfinder:

It's a fairly decent viewfinder. It is well-made, and the view is fairly accurate at most distances. I like the 21/28 but sometimes it gets in the way (I have to remember I'm at 28 frameline, not 21) and it's useless when you're in 35mm crop mode. Further, it doesn't lend itself to pocket carrying when attached. I've stopped using it altogether. It makes the camera look cool -- sort of like the Lomography Sardina, or the Fisheye, but that's about the extent of it. If I had paid money for it, I would have been miffed, but as it came with the camera, not that big of a deal.

This is very useful when using the Ricoh GR in bright sunlight, or if you prefer using a viewfinder. The glass is etched for framing both 28mm and 21mm.

Comments about Ricoh GV-1 External Viewfinder:

I wish it were a true EVF controlled by the hot shoe, but it has very clear optics and enables a proper triangle hold, especially in bright sun. Got it as part of a package, not sure I'd pay retail.

Comments about Ricoh GV-1 External Viewfinder:

I bought a Ricoh GR recently, and I love it. This GV-1 viewfinder came free, but thank goodness I didn't pay $ for it!Let's get right to the point. It is literally a piece of glass with a white rectangle drawn on it. Ok, maybe that's a bit harsh. I'll give it some credit. It's got two white rectangles drawn on it. One for use with the 21mm additional lens, and the other to indicate the default 28mm view.Perhaps I'm spoilt. I'm too young to remember film, and it's been a long time since I used anything that wasn't an SLR. So I'm used to having some heads-up information (aperture, shutter speed etc) and focus preview in my viewfinder. Because the GV-1 is just purely a piece of glass, you don't get anything. I just don't understand why anyone would want or need this. I understand that people like to look through viewfinders. I like to look through viewfinders. It helps me isolate the subject and to concentrate better on framing and focus. In my spare time I shoot gigs and events, and generally mess around a lot with cameras. I bought the GR as a camera I can take anywhere and get decent shots, when I don't want to lug around an SLR. And its brilliant! But I don't want to look through a viewfinder that gives me no indication of focus, and whose framing is horribly inaccurate at distances less than 2m. It also means the GR doesn't fit in my pocket when its on. I toyed with the idea of giving it 2 stars (one bonus star for build quality), but only briefly. It's completely useless and hideously expensive. One star. I would strongly try to dissuade anybody from wasting their money.
