The NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens is Sony's first affordable and fully professional large-sensor video camera. This compact, highly modular camera comes equipped with a stabilized 11x zoom lens while using the same S35-size CMOS sensor as the higher-end PMW-F3. Unlike smaller, broadcast-style sensors or the larger "full-frame" sensors of some DSLRs, the NEX-FS100's imaging area matches that of standard Hollywood film cameras, providing complete compatibility with cine-style film lenses (via optional adapters) as well as any of Sony's E-Mount lenses. The sensor's large size offers a variety of other advantages, including increased control over depth of field, higher sensitivity in low light, lower image noise, and an exceptional dynamic range.

Able to shoot full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, the FS100 provides the option of recording 28Mbps AVCHD footage onto SD or Memory Stick media, or it can output uncompressed 4:2:2 video (with embedded timecode) and RGB via HDMI 1.4 to an external recording unit. There's no stinting on audio, either, as the camera includes not only a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, but dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound from an external source.

Other features--such as a rotating 3.5" XtraFine LCD panel with detachable viewfinder, SD recording, GPS geotagging, and slow shutter--make the FS100 an impressive companion to other cameras in the S35 line. Not only will it intercut perfectly with the F3, F35, or SRW-9000PL as a 2nd unit or B camera, it can stand on its own in applications as diverse as indie film, commercials, music promos, education, and wedding videos.

Exmor Super 35 CMOS Sensor for Shooting Motion Pictures
Equipped with a large CMOS sensor equivalent in size to Super 35mm film, the NEX-FS100 enables shooting with the same creative depth of field as the PMW-F3.

The sensor also features the optimum number of effective pixels for shooting HD moving images. At a high 60fps in all-pixel scan mode, this allows images to be captured with less color aliasing, jaggedness and rolling shutter than DSLR cameras, while providing the sensitivity to shoot at a minimum illumination of 0.28 lux. Another advantage of Exmor technology is minimal noise when shooting lowlight scenes.

E-Mount Interchangeable Lens System
Sony's E-mount interchangeable lenses let you enjoy a level of creative freedom unimaginable with camcorders of the past. All feature precision-crafted optics with aspherical glass elements for compact high performance, and circular iris mechanisms for smooth background defocusing. The supplied E-Mount 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 lens boasts 11x zoom power, a quiet AF motor for cleaner sound recording, and Optical SteadyShot image stabilization with an advanced Active mode that lets you take steady handheld shots while walking around--even without a bulky stabilization rig. An ultra-compact SEL16F28 wide-angle lens and SEL1855 3x zoom lens are also available.

Thanks to the E-mount's short 18mm flange-back distance, using a mount adapter allows shooting with a wide range of existing lenses. For example, with the optional LA-EA1 mount adapter, you can take advantage of the abundant lenses (A-mount lenses). Third-party adapters enable use of an even wider variety of lenses.

Modular Design for a Variety of Shooting Styles
Featuring a compact, lightweight body with detachable grip, handle, and viewfinder, the NEX-FS100 is ideal for a wide range of shooting situations.

During handheld shooting, the angle of the grip can be changed as desired, and recording started and stopped with a button on the grip. Recording start/stop buttons are also provided on the top and lower right of the camera.

There are also 1/4" and 3/8" screw holes on both the handle and the bottom of the camera body for mounting various peripheral devices--plus a tape measure hook and an image sensor position index on the body.

XtraFine LCD Panel
Located on the optical axis, the 3.5"-type XtraFine LCD panel enables easier, more intuitive framing, especially during handheld shooting. And the LCD panel can be rotated for stress-free operation when shooting low-angle scenes and digital signage footage. For easier, more precise focusing in daylight, the viewfinder comes with a detachable 1.2x magnifier.
1920 x 1080P Slow & Quick Motion
Recording images at a different frame rate from that used for playback provides the extra versatility of slow and quick motion shooting. The NEX-FS100 enables Full HD (1920 x 1080) progressive slow and quick motion. Frame rates are selectable from among 60fps, 30fps, 15fps, 8fps, 4fps, 2fps, and 1fps. So, for example, when recording at 1080/30p, if the frame rate is set to 60fps, images are recorded in 2 times slow motion. S&Q shooting plus last scene review permits checking the S&Q effects on-set, immediately after shooting the scene without drilling down menus.
Hybrid Recording
Recording to the directly mountable HXR-FMU128 Flash Memory unit allows continuous recording for over 10 hours without changing the recording medium. Simultaneous recording using memory cards and other media is also possible for secure backup when shooting footage that can't be reshot.

Note: When recording on different media, the resolution must be HD or SD. HD and SD cannot be simultaneously on different media.

NXCAM Recording Format
Like other NXCAM series cameras, the NEX-FS100 uses the well established AVCHD recording format supported by a wide range of nonlinear editing systems. Better still, it's ready to shoot with a maximum frame rate of 1920 x 1080/60p (28Mbps) for even higher quality recording. For more flexibility, it's also possible to record in Standard Definition MPEG-2 format.
Uncompressed 4:2:2 Output & RGB Output via HDMI 1.4
When shooting, the NEX-FS100 can output uncompressed 4:2:2 video with embedded timecode, as well as RGB via HDMI 1.4, onto external media recording units like an HDD.
Geotagging with Built-in GPS Receiver
A built-in GPS receiver makes the NEX-FS100 an ideal choice for professional videographers. The receiver gives you the ability to "geo-tag" shooting locations--making it easy if you need to return to the same location or to create a log when surveying remote locations. Your locations can be tracked on Google Maps and all GPS data can be extracted with a PC. Additionally, the receiver automatically adjusts your camcorder's clock to the proper time zone when international travel is part of your assignment.
Picture Profile
Six picture profile settings for different shooting conditions are provided as default settings. Selecting a picture profile for a particular scene offers an easy way to creatively change your shoot.
Last Scene Review
Press a single button to immediately review the last recorded scene.
Expanded Focus
Press a button and this enlarges the centre of the displayed image by 2x, a particularly useful feature when making critical focusing adjustments.
Histogram
Onscreen display of a histogram enables easier exposure adjustment. The histogram also shows the point where the zebra pattern appears (the zebra point). This enables confirmation of overall brightness distribution and the brightness level set with the zebra function. As well as preventing overexposure, this is useful as a guide when aiming for optimum exposure of certain parts of an image, such as faces.
Peaking
A peaking function draws a defined line around the subject displayed in the LCD monitor and viewfinder. Peaking sensitivity and color (red, white, yellow) can be selected to enable more precise focusing.
Markers
Center, aspect, safety zone, guide frame and other markers can be displayed on the LCD.
Firmware Update
Sony has implemented a firmware update scheme for future functions.

I researched cameras for about 5 months before purchasing the FS100. I was originally looking at the 5D Mark III, but wanted a camera just for video. I did so much research I was losing my mind, but I finally decided on the FS100, and I can say I made the right choice. I film sports primarily, and recently brought it to the US Wrestling Nationals in Vegas, and the depth of field on this camera was fantastic. It was awesome in low light, and the picture profiles built in are a great help. One of the Cons people reported were it was cumbersome, but I rigged it up to a VariZoom monopod and find it extreamly easy to carry and maneuver. I'm running around alot when filming, so I can say this is great for those who do both run-and-gun, and stationary shooting. The kit lens was better than expected, and though I will evenetually upgrade, it certainly suffices. It's small, and very easy to trasport. I recommend this camera to anyone!

I use this product for event, corporate and commercial videography.

The image quality is by far the greatest thing about this camera. Having access to interchangeable lenses is amazing, however using your canon or nikon lenses will definitely be problematic. Being there is no way to control aperture it becomes a little bit complicated to use this camera in high pressure situations.

With the nex sony lens, the camera definitely becomes easier to use, but it still has some major flaws with what i consider consumer quality features. digital aperture wheels located on the rear/side of the camera make for an extremely consumer and complicated level of use.

The LCD screen is big and crystal clear. However, it's somewhat annoying that there's no ocular.

In general I would love to see the use and quality of the ex-03 with the image quality and lens versatility of the FS100.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

I already own an FS100 and since I make my living shooting and editing video I need a second camera so that I can have matching shots and continuous coverage--as well as a backup if something goes wrong. The FS100 has everything I need at this point. Unlimited record times without camera overheating and interchangability with so many new and legacy lenses. The lack of a zoom control and no ND filter built in are my only criticisms. Fantastic picture quality and now a very affordable price--$ less than what I paid for the first camera!

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

for starters, I like the form factor of the camera, it adapts well to rail systems, the LCD viewfinder is great for covering stationary events in the sun.
the threaded mount holes are great for attaching arms, handles and attaching an LCD monitor for shooting more cinema, everything is modular and can be relocated as well.

the kit lens is definitely competent and with the metabones sony promotion till the end of the month you can lock in all the EF primes you want as well.

2 XLR inputs and built in manual audio level controls are a breath of fresh air.

paired with the NP-F970 Battery (purchased seperately) you can have up to 8 hours of recording battery life.

I bought this camera to eventually be a B cam for my next purchase, a RED.

I would reccomend it to anyone looking to move from a DSLR

Great in low lights, excellent video quality, easy to use, small and very light, can use any lens with adapter(CAN CONTROL EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR AUTO FOCUS THOS/NO AUTO FOCUS WITH CANON LENSES).
Don't like the gain control because its presets only, the monitor is not good when filming above the head need to add on.
The adapter arrived in less then a month. Great job Sony.
Better then any dslr in price range I tried them all (Canon 70D, 6D, 5D ii/iii, Sony A7, Panasonic GH3,4……) yes no 4K but much better in low light then GH4.

I record speakers for the native plant society as well as make videos of plants, pollinators and birds in natural areas.
Videotaping presentations can be difficult because the room needs to be pretty dark for the PowerPoints. This camera has much better low light abilities than my previous unit. For pollinators it's great to have slow motion abilities and this camera does that, though only for 3 seconds at a time. the camera does not include internal neutral density filters, but I bought a variable set. It would be nice not to have to put them on and off though. I'm looking forward to recieving the canon lens adapter. It will take 8-10 weeks, per Sony. The ability to use my suite of Canon glass was a major plus for this camcorder.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

Its better to have it an not need it, than to need it an not have. This is a rule I use when camping. When I purchased my new Sony, I decided to pay extra so that I might be able to capture those once in a lifetime shots or videos. I may not have the expertise to take full advantage of this gems facets, but I Will Learn. I Love My New Sony! So, don't visit the Tetons with an Instamatic...LOL...spend a little more an capture some lasting memories in stills and video.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

Most of negative reviews here are by some one who don't know anything about using camera. This is a great buy for the price. If you want to buy it, you should test it first to see if its for your needs and then buy it.
In my experience this camera is great in low light, great image quality, very easy to use, and much much cheaper compared to similar ones.
Yes Canon C100 is good but there are things that you can do with FS100 and you can't do with C100 I own them both. Slow motion is really great even tho its only at 60fps.
The only thing didn't like about it and it doesn't say any where that you can't adjust gain/iso manually its auto or presets H/M/L which is a big deal when you use in going from low light to bright and back-and-forth, but for the price its not a big deal.
Better then Canon 5D III to shut video for many reasons.
                1. Much longer lasting battery. With 5D I had to change it's often get very annoying.
                2. Will record way more hours in the same size SD card because of AVCHD.
                3. Will record 1080 60p 60i
                4. With adapters can use all kids of lenses so if you own nikon can work with nikon if you own canon will work with canon………

Its a great buy, but still test it first to make sure it suits your needs don't rely on reviews because most of them don't even know what there talking about. I almost didn't buy because of some negative reviews I am glad I did buy it.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

really needs a tripod rig or handle to be functional and it would have been just that much nicer if the ND filter was somehow built in - the ND filter we got also wasn't compatible with the lens hood that comes with it

I use this camera for industry productions and i really do love the image this camera puts out. With the correct settings the HD image has a great film like quality. The lack of the auto zoom is not a great feature but if you work off the lense it is not a problem.

So far, highly impressed, even with the kit lens.

This is the third time we purchased this camera.
We use it to produce a TV program in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
We love the changeable lens and available accessories.
You must purchase the extra large battery to be usable all day.

Out of the box this camera makes a nice picture. The Kit lens feels sturdy enough and doesn't breathe a lot. It's a little slow, but for the price, what do you expect? It covers a nice focal range and I'm not finding too much to complain about. I love that there are six buttons on the side that are all fully customizable. Being able to create custom picture profiles is a nice option and overall the camera has a very professional feel. Giving it 4 stars because SDI would be nice.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

I use the NEX FS100UK mostly for wedding and other events. Like how most people agree, video quality is the thing we like the most. Shooting in low light conditions just got so much easier. I no longer have to use artificial lighting, even in poorly lit venues.
There are a few things I didn't like about the camera but I got used to it. 1. the lack of power zoom, 2. lack of nd filters 3. the inability to see the screen from overhead shooting.
To compensate for this problem, well for power zoom I practiced both using the zoom wheel or grabbing the lens hood back or forth. I actually got really good using that method and I found it to be smoother than using power zoom on other cameras. For the filters, well, for the ones I need, they're not that expensive. For the overhead shooting, I also practiced that by using a monopod to raise the camera and just judging by where the lens is pointed I am able to capture a smooth footage from above.
The EVF viewfinder is basically useless. I found it much better by investing in a $20.00 screen hood. I had to modify the hood a bit so now I got it fitted exactly how I want it.
It took me a couple of events to get used to the position of the grip for gunning and shooting. The XLR cable audio input 1 does get in the way and if the stock microphone had a little bit longer cable you could connect it to audio input 2. That's an easy fix by purchasing a short XLR cable for extension.
Overall, great camera for the money. not a perfect camera, but if it was perfect, it would be much more expensive. In conclusion, I give it 5 stars for the price.

This cam is very versatile. I can set it up like a cinema camera with follow focus and matte box. Put a Nanoflash on it and shoot great green screen. Strip it down and put the Sony lense on it for run and gun. As a freelance producer I never know what kind of job I will be working on, and the Sony NEX FS-100 allows me to be ready for almost any kind of job. My clients always comment on how great the picture is. It is a keeper.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

This product is used primarily to film interviews and b-reel footage within an agriculture context.

The dynamic range from the 35mm sensor, interchangeable lenses, and XLR audio inputs allow for greatly improved video and audio capture versus 'prosumer' type video cameras.

Most of my lenses are canon EF mount, so I highly recommend getting an adapter unless you already have an investment in Sony lenses.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:

I purchased this camera to upgrade from my Canon XH-G1 for shooting weddings and events. I needed something that had autofocus and good low light ability, but still wanted the look of Super 35. This camera is perfect for that. I primarily use it on my Steadicam Flyer LE, and since it is not economical to hire a focus puller for wedding videography, having a quick autofocus lens is an enormous bonus. This camera maintains its color space through the ISO range, which is perfect since most weddings are very low light. I feel it is highly intrusive to use video lights when a bride has specifically determined the mood she wants to set through her event lighting designers. So, having a camera that can take whatever lighting situation you want to throw at it and still look great is phenomenal. The main downside to this camera is its design. The "handle" doesn't feel sturdy enough to carry it by (like the Canon XH-G1 was) without holding the bottom of it too. The LCD screen is also in a bad place for handheld, and if you need to hold the camera above your head to get a shot, you can forget seeing the screen. On a positive note for handheld though, you can have the kit lens at 200mm and it stabilizes well enough that it could almost be mistaken for being on a tripod. I highly recommend getting the Metabones Speedbooster adaptor for mounting Canon EF glass. Absolutely worth every penny. And with a Sony NP-F970 battery, I can have the camera on for 6 hours straight and still keep shooting.
