The NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens is Sony's first affordable and fully professional large-sensor video camera. This compact, highly modular camera comes equipped with a stabilized 11x zoom lens while using the same S35-size CMOS sensor as the higher-end PMW-F3. Unlike smaller, broadcast-style sensors or the larger "full-frame" sensors of some DSLRs, the NEX-FS100's imaging area matches that of standard Hollywood film cameras, providing complete compatibility with cine-style film lenses (via optional adapters) as well as any of Sony's E-Mount lenses. The sensor's large size offers a variety of other advantages, including increased control over depth of field, higher sensitivity in low light, lower image noise, and an exceptional dynamic range.
Able to shoot full 1080p video in a range of frame rates up to 60p, the FS100 provides the option of recording 28Mbps AVCHD footage onto SD or Memory Stick media, or it can output uncompressed 4:2:2 video (with embedded timecode) and RGB via HDMI 1.4 to an external recording unit. There's no stinting on audio, either, as the camera includes not only a shotgun microphone with mount/carrying handle, but dual XLR inputs for recording uncompressed, professional-level sound from an external source.
Other features--such as a rotating 3.5" XtraFine LCD panel with detachable viewfinder, SD recording, GPS geotagging, and slow shutter--make the FS100 an impressive companion to other cameras in the S35 line. Not only will it intercut perfectly with the F3, F35, or SRW-9000PL as a 2nd unit or B camera, it can stand on its own in applications as diverse as indie film, commercials, music promos, education, and wedding videos.
The sensor also features the optimum number of effective pixels for shooting HD moving images. At a high 60fps in all-pixel scan mode, this allows images to be captured with less color aliasing, jaggedness and rolling shutter than DSLR cameras, while providing the sensitivity to shoot at a minimum illumination of 0.28 lux. Another advantage of Exmor technology is minimal noise when shooting lowlight scenes.
Thanks to the E-mount's short 18mm flange-back distance, using a mount adapter allows shooting with a wide range of existing lenses. For example, with the optional LA-EA1 mount adapter, you can take advantage of the abundant lenses (A-mount lenses). Third-party adapters enable use of an even wider variety of lenses.
During handheld shooting, the angle of the grip can be changed as desired, and recording started and stopped with a button on the grip. Recording start/stop buttons are also provided on the top and lower right of the camera.
There are also 1/4" and 3/8" screw holes on both the handle and the bottom of the camera body for mounting various peripheral devices--plus a tape measure hook and an image sensor position index on the body.
Note: When recording on different media, the resolution must be HD or SD. HD and SD cannot be simultaneously on different media.

I've been in this business since the film days. Bolex, CP16's, TK76's, 3/4", Betacam, and now all this digital gear. My daily runner is a PMW-EX1R. The FS-100 interested me because of the high regard for the images coming from the Canon DSLR's. I bought the NEX-FS100UK, that's with the kit lens. From the moment I turned it on I was very impressed with it. The kit lens actually is quite nice for the price, I did some sports running and gunning with this camera and the kit lens ... the results were astonishing. The lens is a little clumsy but not as clumsy as the SLR zooms I am used to from the 70's. This lens holds its focus through out the zoom range. My old SLR zooms would require a major refocus with ever variance of focal length. The wide end on this lens is actually a little wider than my EX1R and a little shorter on the long end.
The only thing I couldn't do running and gunning was hold the camera over my head and see the viewfinder. Not a deal breaker at all.
The image this camera creates is nothing short of stunning. The imager is the cleanest I've ever seen. It's light gathering capabilities are magical. At 18 db gain there is no noticeable grain, even 30 db is clean. Never have I seen such a light sensitive camera. There are no built in ND filters, I use a variable ND that screws onto the front of the lens, it works much like an aperture. Open and close it ... it makes for very precise exposures.
I'm using not only the lens that came with the camera but also my old set of Minolta primes I've had for years. Lens adapters for this camera are seamless and very inexpensive. Shooting interviews with my Minolta 58mm 1.4 prime is just beautiful, a perfect match.
I'm recording to 16GB Transend cards, they are giving 88 minutes of HD at the FX (24Mbps) setting, blows me away. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with this camera. The images are ingested into my FCP 6.06 almost instantly thru Log and Transfer. A real dream.

I use this product for event, corporate and commercial videography.
The image quality is by far the greatest thing about this camera. Having access to interchangeable lenses is amazing, however using your canon or nikon lenses will definitely be problematic. Being there is no way to control aperture it becomes a little bit complicated to use this camera in high pressure situations.
With the nex sony lens, the camera definitely becomes easier to use, but it still has some major flaws with what i consider consumer quality features. digital aperture wheels located on the rear/side of the camera make for an extremely consumer and complicated level of use.
The LCD screen is big and crystal clear. However, it's somewhat annoying that there's no ocular.
In general I would love to see the use and quality of the ex-03 with the image quality and lens versatility of the FS100.

excellent image quality but not that much better than a 4 year old Panasonic TM700K. when stock lens is used, low light sensitivity is about the same. used a fast lens f1.8 and image was free of any noise, even at very little light. however, autofocus does not work even in bright light. always managed to focus on a small object at the corner of the frame in the background while the subject filling 85% of the frame and closest to the camera!!! not worth the extra money

I've only owned this camera for a couple of weeks and I can already tell that this camera will become one of my most priced possessions. The Super 35mm sensor gives a lovely image that far surpasses that of DSLRs. At 24P 1080 this camera looks completely cinematic. For those interested in independent filmmaking or documentaries, the FS100 is the perfect tool. Small, light and compact, the camera is ideal for 'run and gun' style shooting. With full bandwidth audio and XLR connectors, the FS100 is a totally professional tool, allowing the content creator to shoot and edit with complete confidence in the final product. The amount of control one has over the image quality is also exceptional. Frame rates are selectable from 60fps, 30 fps, 15 fps, 8 fps, 4 fps and 2 fps. Great Slow-Mo shooting is available in progressive mode. Too many other features to mention in this review. I highly recommend this camera to anyone interested in upping their game to the next level from DSLRs or 3 chip cameras. The FS100 is a game changer that will democratize the film and television industry. Best of all is the under 5K price!

Has a very nice look in both 24 and 30fps. Have used extensively for on air and web based commercials. It does have a Sony "cooler" look than the Panasonic AF100 which I would compare it to, however there is plenty of latitude and no problem warming up the image in post. Shoots very well in low light. Would recommend it over the AF100. The

I do event videos and documentaries. This super 35 provides a superb quality image with an impressive dynamic range and vibrant colors. Its low light capability is extraordinary especially if one exploits the gain which leaves no visible diminishment in image quality. Its modular design works well for me and, of course, its interchangeable lens capability is a huge plus. The kit lens is decent and does indeed allow for shallow depth of field, if that's important to you. I've been extremely pleased with it. I should note, though, that it is not great for "run and gun" shooting. There is not a decent handle on it - and the viewfinder which is mounted on the top will, therefore, not angle down. So, like a DSLR, one should think about buying a rig(s) for it, if you want to use it in that manner. In its out-of-box format, it works best attached to a tripod. The included short shotgun mike is, at best so-so, but with two XLR ports - that ceases to be an issue. Anyone looking to buy a DSLR for video would be so much better served by this camera. An extra bonus in that I was able to fit the camera (disassembled) into a standard DSLR camera bag.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:
First and foremost, I'm not an expert in cinematography. Second, it is really cold here at where I live so I couldn't go outside and play around with the camcorder that much. This is build from the ground up as a camcorder not a camera. I know that DSLR have there places, but I believe that if you want to learn about video/film, you'll need the right tools (DSLR is a different type of tool). This is a film equivalent Super 35mm sensor, because of the big sensor you'll get a shadow depth of field, better low light sensitivity, and high dynamic range. This is a world camera, you can download the firmware update at Sony and it is free. The design is very bold (Like a tank, and I really like it) and it kinda heavy for handheld; A rig is require if you want to be comfortable using it for a long periods of time. It comes with buttons, lot of buttons, and it all over the places. It always nice to have hard buttons rather than digging through menus. The pictures this camcorder produce is really amazing. What is awesome is that you can create picture profiles for later to be edit in post. 4:2:2 uncompressed HDMI out is only 8-bits not 10-bits is a bit of disappointment. Also it is a CMOS sensor so you'll get moire and aliasing, but it really minimal. There is no such thing as perfect, it is only perfect because you see it as perfect. Overall this camcorder is really amazing, I'm having a blast just shooting with it. Did I mention it is Super 35?

Use this camera mostly for wedding/event cinema. Great picture, easy to use once you learn how to use it. Can be set to used fully manual which is perfect for professionals. Would be nice to have ND filters but it's easy to live without them. The 700 has filters but feels bulky and awkward compared to the 100.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:
I used the FS100 for freelance news gathering and documentary purposes. The Super 35mm Sensor creates a beautiful full-frame HD image and is excellent in low light. I had the gain at 21db with very minimal noise to speak of. The design of the camera itself is not very ergonomic. I like to hold the camera above my head and with the LCD monitor on top of the camera, I cannot see what I'm shooting. It does have ample places to attach modifications but would have liked the screen on the side from the start.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:
I upgraded to the FS100 after using DSLRs in my work for a couple years. It's a breath of fresh air to be able to use a dedicated camcorder. All of the functions are well laid out and within a day I was able to hit most of the controls by feel without taking my eyes off of the screen. The video quality is a step above my Canon 60D, especially with good Canon glass on it.A review I read called it the "Swiss Army Knife" of cameras. Couldn't agree more: You can build up whatever configuration you need, from ENG to Doc to cinema.Battery life is phenomenal. Even with the stock battery (NP-F770), I got 5+hours of pure recording (meaning I just hit record and let it run for 5 hours). The optional NP-F970 should go even longer. The kit lens is a mixed bag. I found it very useful for doing hand-held and live event work because of the long zoom and image stabilization. But the slow aperture (f/3.5-6.3) makes it less useful for indoor shooting. Also, the speed-sensitive focus ring is unintuitive and frustrating.I just shot something on the Canon C300, and while that camera is superior in certain ways, the FS100 has two very important features the C300 does not:1. 60p. The C300 will only do 60i, even if you decrease the data rate or resolution.2. 2-from-1 audio recording. With the FS100, I can record from one XLR input into both audio channels, and set the input levels separately. This is invaluable when recording audio with high dynamic range. With two levels you can make sure to get the high and low volume audio at usable levels.Given that the FS100 is a third the price of the C300, I'm quite happy with the value of this camera.Drawbacks:Obviously, the big elephant in the room is the lack of built-in ND filters. That is the reason this review is 4 stars instead of 5. Should be a no-brainer. Fortunately, I found a variable ND filter and a set of step-up adapter rings so I can use ND on all of my lenses without using a matte box. No HD SDI out. HDMI works fine, and I'm glad the FS100 has a full-size HDMI port, instead of a flimsy mini-HDMI port. But even the AF100 has BNC-style HD SDI output. When you're in the field, moving quickly, BNC cables are the way to go.Build quality. Some of the bits on the camera feel a little cheap. Specifically: the ring around the lens mount has a little play in it. I don't think it affects the lens, but it's disconcerting. The hand grip. I like the fact that the hand grip is rotatable and removable, but it's very fiddly to screw and unscrew. Those drawbacks aside, I've been extremely happy with this camera. Can't wait to use it on more projects.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:
If it comes down to a DSLR (like a 5DmkII or III), there is no comparison with the FS100. A DSLR is simply a photo camera. The design doesn't allow for movie making like Sony's FS100. Despite the sensor size being smaller than a 5D, the FS100 has a sensor size comparable to an Arri Alexa, a Red Epic, and a Sony F3. It has the ability to take multiple lenses just like the 5D, and the possibilities for picture profile manipulation are massive! A few of the drawbacks are the limited color space, the lack of ND filters, and no image stabilization (only available in the lenses). A lot of people aren't happy about the e-mount. But that is easily solved by purchasing a Metabones EOS to E mount electronic adapter. This camera is perfect for web series episodes, commercial filmmaking, documentaries, weddings, low budget narrative production, and music videos. Save yourselves the frustration and money spent on a DSLR, and go with a Sony FS100.

It came down to a Canon 5D or this Sony FS100 and the made-for-video features of this camera won out. XLR audio inputs, modular design, and no-crop sensor made the difference for me. Like everyone else, I am bummed about the lack of built-in ND filters and the E-mount, but I stocked up on some good filters and am ready to go. The kit lens is good, but I can always add Canon, Nikon, PL, or whatever with a suitable adapter.

Comments about Sony NEX-FS100UK Super 35 Camcorder with 18-200mm Lens:
I bought this camera for indie film production. In a typical shoot, I will wear many hats and the hassle (not to mention the expense) of rigging and shooting with a DSLR just isn't practical for me.
This camera does it all. I am very pleased with the quality of video from the camera and the E Mount lens that I bought with it. It shoot very high quality video in very low light and there is minimal noise/grain that I can see on my 30" cinema monitor.
The one thing that would have been nice would have been a servo zoom. Possibly this is difficult because of the interchangeable lens.
Sony did some nice things with the ergonomics of this cam. The only thing that is a little bit of an issue is the selection wheel for the menu. It is too sensitive and often you inadvertently select something while trying to turn the wheel.
Personally, I think Sony picked up the ball that Canon and Panasonic dropped in this category of video cams. With other similar products sure to come, the DSLR video market really has nothing to offer me.

Love this cam. We use it with Sony NEX, Sony Alpha, Canon EF and Nikon lenses with great results. It makes a perfect photo/video kit with our NEX-7 and NEX-5n.

Coming from Canon XH-A1 this camera is just amazing in low light. Now kit lens is very good but once you pass 150mm then AF is not that good in low light.

After using the 7D for video since the day it was announce, it feels so good to use a real video camera that gives the same and even better cinematic look. The lens that comes with it is a great lens for run and gun but don't use it if you are looking for the cinematic look.I could have the chance to wait and get the c100 but I think that the fs100 over all is a best buy, especially with the $ rebate.
