The 8x42 ProStaff 7 Binocular from Nikon is a full-featured general purpose set that combines a weather-sealed housing and a fully multicoated Eco-Glass optical path. In addition to the multi-layer coated lens system, ProStaff 7 optics also have phase-corrected roof prisms that preserve sharpness and color fidelity. A highly-reflective mirror coating also allows the prisms to maximize brightness and clarity of the transmitted image. Nikon's Eco-Glass optics include environmentally-friendly lenses and prisms that do not contain lead or arsenic.

Turn-and-Slide eyecups with multiple click-stop positions complement the 19mm eye relief, which can provide a comfortable viewing distance for almost and viewer. A nitrogen-filled fogproof housing wrapped in slip-resistant rubber armoring makes the ProStaff7 binocular ready to endure rain and snow. Bought these for my teenage grandson for a safari. They are quite sharp, have excellent light-gathering capacity and are a great choice, especially for the price. Would buy them again, even for me, and would recommend them.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 ProStaff 7 Binocular:

I have previously owned the Nikon Monarch 8X42 and loved them. Unfortunately I lost them. I wasn't sure that the Prostaff 7 could compete at half the price, but Nikon has done it again. They are a bit longer and heavier than the Monarch and they aren't able to focus as close, but the image brightness and clarity are just as good. I highly recommend the Prostaff 7 8X42. I haven't seen anything that can compare at this amazing price.

            Great Improvement Over Basic Binoculars

Comments about Nikon 8x42 ProStaff 7 Binocular:

For the price, these may actually deserve 5 stars, but I am being stingy as only time will tell just how well they hold up. I have always bought basic binoculars before and it is safe to say that the improvement is quite significant. The image is quite a bit brighter and somewhat sharper. Cheaper binoculars are not as bright to begin with and then they seem to get hazier over time. I am hopeful that these will maintain their excellent clarity, but only time will tell.

I appreciate that you can fasten the eyepiece covers to the strap, but the eyepiece cover is a bit clumsy.

Comments about Nikon 8x42 ProStaff 7 Binocular:

These binoculars are simply tremendous good value for money, but they have poor caps. I deducted 1 star for the Objective and Eyepiece caps. The eyepiece caps are a disappointment, as they just fall off.Poor Objective and Eyepiece caps are a common complaint from buyers of Binoculars. Nikon have these excellent binoculars, with poor caps. It just doesn't make sense. Even $2000+ binoculars are often fitted with poor caps, and it's not only Nikon products which are haunted by this problem.I replaced the Objective caps (front) with:Two Tethered Push-On Objective Caps for 42mm Fury, Razor, & Viper Binoculars by Vortex. I am unable to find a proper replacement for the eyepiece caps (rear).Nikon have excellent information about binoculars on its website. If you Google "Nikon" and "Basic Information about Binoculars" you will find info on:1) Magnification2) Effective diameter of the objective lens3) Exit pupil4) Relative brightness5) Eye relief6) Real field of view7) Prisms of binoculars Once you understand the above, the specifications of binoculars makes more sense.I recommend reading the above before buying any binocular. On the Nikon Sport Optics website under "PROSTAFF 7 8x42/10x42", you will note the potential applications: Hunting;Mountaineering; Birding;Marine;Sports. The above is just great, compared with other binoculars. If you want higher spec binoculars, you need to look at the Nikon Monarch range, or the Nikon EDG range. The EDG range is the best money can buy, but it's expensive. The Prostaff 7 is a very good general use binocular, and excellent value for money. The 8 x 42 is a good compromise between magnification, stability & brightness. As a good binocular can't be a "Jack of all trades" you may need to buy additional binoculars for longer focal lengths or different applications. We have a 20x binocular, but it's too difficult to hold by hand. It's just interesting to note a 8x magnification binocular is equivalent to a 400mm (35mm equivalent) camera lens.

I ordered the nikon pro staff 7 because the lens are fully multicoated and it won an award for being one of the best rated binoculars of 2011. Also, 8 power are easier to hold still than 10 power. I'm also impressed by the clarity of the lens which is complete edge to edge. The lens are bright and the field of view is excellant. This pair of binoculars gets the job done!
