The Manfrotto Maxima-84 Hybrid On-Camera LED Light is a constant video light that transforms into a flash unit for still photography. A push button on the back activates flash mode; an included sync cable connects and syncs the light to your camera; and upon your snapping a photo, a flash goes off at 4 times the brightness of the max output in video mode, which is 670 lux at 3 ft. when the light's 0-100% dimmer is set to 100%. The native color temperature in video mode is 5600K daylight color.

The light powers by a built-in rechargeable battery and comes with a charger and four international socket adapters for the charger -- for the US, EU, UK and China. The battery lasts about an hour-and-a-half. Also included are a gel and diffuser set for warming and softening the 5600K color, and a multi-functional Manfrotto ball head for attaching the light to your camera.

The ball head can hold the light in portrait or landscape mode -- it connects to the light by shoe mount, and the light has a shoe on both its long side and short side. Either way you connect, you can pivot the light, angle it, and rotate it on the ball head. You can also unscrew a section of the ball head to reveal a 1/4" thread by which you can mount the light onto various stands that support 1/4"-20 mounting. The light having two shoes lets you attach it to other Maxima-84s. You can stack as many of them together as you want.

Comments about Manfrotto Maxima-84 Hybrid On-Camera LED Light:

Manfrotto's Maxima 84 Hybrid on-camera LED light its solid built and it's not heavy at all, which is a plus when adding gear to a DSLR camera; a Lithium built-in battery powers 84 LEDs which with a simple turn of a knob, the LEDs turn on and go from completely dimmed to a high LED light very similar to daylight; also, by plugging a cable (included) and selecting the Flash button (back of the light) the light turns into a large speedlight with illuminates at 4 times stronger than when using continuous light. Some Maxima 84 reviews online say that the light has a narrow illumination field; I got this light a few days ago, and I was able to practice with; the first test I did on the Maxima 84, was to see how much diameter the light illuminates from 8 feet distance to the subject; at that distance, I was able to illuminate about three people standing side to side as if they were having a conversation; so, it's confirmed, the Maxima 84 LED illuminates a narrow area; this would not be my 'key' or main light. While the light is on horizontal position, there's another small light below that illuminates the camera's controls even in total darkness; the battery charges quick and there's no way to open the light and change the battery, so always bring the plug; an advantage for the Maxima 84 is that it's stackable with other lights of the same model, but at this price, and for the amount of light it produces I'd better spend that money on other type of light; this light comes with two filters and one diffuser which work wonderfully, but they don't come with any type of protective carrying case; same goes for the actual light, which it doesn't have a carrying case either; I already solved that issue, but would be nice if this light came with a carrying case where I could also store the filters and its charger as well. This light doesn't get hot, so that's very nice as well; oh, it's made in China… The light comes with a thin protective film stuck to the light; leave it there until you familiarize with the camera's weight and shape; that way if you drop the light by accident, it won't get scratched that soon; and the most important thing: how long does the built-in battery last? The reviews are approximate; read Manfrotto's results for this, as they have already spent lots of time using this light. Overall, and being this Manfrotto's flagship LED light (for DSLR video and photo use), I like it a lot; I only wish it had a wider illumination field; I compared the Maxima 84 to my scuba diving light (Sola Video 1200 Light Motion, $) and the scuba diving light has a lot more power and wider illumination field from close and far. Still, I already own this Maxima 84, and I'm planning on keeping it.

Comments about Manfrotto Maxima-84 Hybrid On-Camera LED Light:

I have been very pleased with other Manfrotto products, and therefor thought this light was a safe bet. I was wrong. I used this light on my Canon 60D, and no matter how I adjusted the frame rate, I always got lines that strobed horizontally up and down my image. The construction of the unit is pretty solid, but the horizontal strobing lines completely ruin your image. Avoid.

Comments about Manfrotto Maxima-84 Hybrid On-Camera LED Light:

This is a fairly powerful unit for its small size, and performs as you'd expect from Manfrotto. It works fine for hot-shoe, on-camera use where the subject faces the camera squarely at close range. If used on a stand that is more than approx. 4 feet or more from the subject, however, the output may not be strong enough to use as a primary. IMHO, this is best employed as a fill light with a 128- or 256-LED primary.

I use a DSLR setup for video and photography. This quality and light weight product fits my setup great, making it portable and versatile. Unfortunately, I only gave it 4 stars because no one has made a simple soft case for it and the accessories. I expect someone will soon, but to drop a few hundred bucks and not have a case is disappointing.

As a travel shooter, I never know what I am going to encounter nor what I will need to shoot it as both stills and video. This unit gives me a choice without adding extra gear and weight to what I carry. I'm still testing it out but, so far, I've gotten the results I want.

Comments about Manfrotto Maxima-84 Hybrid On-Camera LED Light:

I bought this light to use as an accent light for my still portrait photography in low light and night. I find that it works excellent fo nighttime wedding applications. I love it as a light moveable light. I attach this to my gorillapod and it can be attached almost everywhere. I would highly recomend this if you are looking to light subjects at night and need your light to be portable and lightweight. The best part of this light is that is relativaly cheap, easy to use. I simply turn the dial to turn on. The further you turn the dial the brighter the light gets. The included filters work great to create the light you are looking for. I am planning on buying two more of these with two gorillapods to mount them. I wil be able to light my subjects easily. This is a must have for wedding photographers along with your speedlights.
