  • Turns Standard 120 into a 120 TLR

The Holga Vertical Viewer Attachment VV-120 for Holga 120 Cameras turns the standard 120 Holga into a 120 TLR. The Vertical Viewer allows you to frame your images with the care generally attributed twin lens reflex cameras, not normally a hallmark of the 35mm.

Comments about Vertical Viewer Attachment VV-120 for Holga 120 Cameras:

This finder is great for making a Holga 120 N-series camera even more "interesting" looking. It fits the camera well, and has cutouts on the rear "leg" to fit over the on/off switch and ready light of built-in flash models, such as the 120FN. In fact, said switch serves as a "snap-fit" anchor, a more secure arrangement than with non-flash models. Actual usefulness, however, is limited. It does permit low-angle (i.e. "worm's-eye") viewing, the unit's main benefit, but the large distance between taking and viewing lenses creates a major parallax problem; you have to keep in mind that the taking lens has a much lower view than the viewing lens. For instance, the low-angle view through the vertical finder may look fine, but the camera lens may be seeing nothing but grass. Ditto for close portraits. This is no problem with normal, waist-level compositions at longer (20 ft. +) distances. You cannot look through the vertical finder with your eye down at the viewing eye-lens; it is in focus only when held at waist level, and closing one eye works best. The image is round, not the square format of the camera. It would be nice if the two lenses were square-masked, but this would need to be done internally to the unit. When viewing, try to imagine a square within the circular image, with the corners of the square touching the edge of the circle; anything outside the square won't be recorded. That's as close to "accurate" as you'll get. For normal (non-low-angle) viewing, I prefer the camera's built-in finder. The unit comes with protective caps for both lenses. For very little money, the vertical finder is a fun, experimental gizmo, but it definitely won't turn your Holga into a Rolleiflex TLR!

Comments about Vertical Viewer Attachment VV-120 for Holga 120 Cameras:

This is a good addition to the Holga kit. Although its difficult to get used to and definitely distorts what you're trying to frame up, it does make it possible to replicate the TLR style of shooting.

Comments about Vertical Viewer Attachment VV-120 for Holga 120 Cameras:

Depending on the height of my tripod I may use the vertical viewer or the built in viwer. In either case you have to learn that neither viewer shows exactly the final framing. The vertical view has a circular image. The camera makes either square or rectanglar. The paralax is worse with the virtical viewer but the image is clearer and brighter.
