The SpiderPro Single Camera System from Spider Camera Holster is a unique way to have your professional DSLR at the ready. This is a serious hip-mounted holster that provides a way to wear your DSLR on your waist as a cowboy would his six-shooter. Instead of having two cameras dangling from your shoulders, The Spider gives you the freedom to hold one camera in your hands while the other rests on your hip.

The SpiderPro Single Camera System includes a belt, holster, camera plate and pin. Using this system, you can also remain hands-free while your DSLR hangs at your side waiting for that grab shot. The system is comprised of four pieces. The SpiderPro belt, which holds the entire rig, the holster that holds the camera, the plate that attaches to the tripod socket of your camera and the pin that is attached to the plate. The entire assembly slides into the holster which secures to the belt using Spider's two-position lock system. Your camera stays at your side while retaining complete freedom of movement.

When the camera is slid into the holster, it locks into place. When placed into the upper portion of the holster, the lock releases and your camera is ready to be drawn - just as if you were wearing a holstered pistol. The holster is attached using a large quick-release buckle. Made from stainless steel and aluminum, this system is targeted at the "run-and-gun" shooter who is constantly on the prowl for that "keeper".

Camera locks into place each time it is returned to the holster - In lower position the lock secures your camera each time it's placed in the holster. In upper position - the lock disengages for quick and easy access to your camera.
Gives your camera freedom of movement at your hip
Extremely durable and designed specifically for active shooting situations

I purchased this product for a trip to Disney. I have tried different solutions for carrying a camera around the park ... a Tenba sling bag and a Black Rapid strap. I have worn the camera everyday for 9 days for about 9 hours a day. The camera is a Canon 40D with the Canon battery grip, a 24-70mm Canon L Series lens and a Canon Speed Lite 580EX.

Convenience - The camera stays conveniently at my side and is very accessible. It does not hang out very far from my side. The flash points down and the lens points behind me (just like in the sample pictures). Other strap systems would point the 580 EX flash away from the body and I feared it would be so far away that people walking by would hit it, which is why I selected this one.

The Lock - If you use the lock, you need two hands to get the camera out. This will slow the quickdraw process. However, I have not used the lock and have had no issues. To be far though, I have attached my Black Rapid to the camera as a security blanket in case it did fall. (The Black Rapid strap does not sit correctly without the weight of a camera ... but that is a different issue)

The Holster - The holster is made of metal and seems to be of good quality. It is held onto the belt with two screws. I did try using it on a regular belt. Twice I pulled at the camera and lifted the holster off my leather belt. Also when I had it on my leather belt it tended to pull my pants down somewhat, so unless you tighten your belt an uncomfortable level this is not a good solution. I am now only using the provided belt.

The Belt - The belt is black with a thick strap and adjusts via velcro. You will have to put the belt on very snug to not have the camera fall to low on your hip (but not as tight if you are using it to hold up the camera and your pants). The biggest flaw I have found in the belt is the plastic lock. The lock snaps together and there is a security lock. The security lock might NOT engage unless you push it firmly together. I do consider this a small problem. It is comfortable sitting down and I have not had to remove the belt to get on and off rides, however, do remove the camera when I am on the rides.

Endurance - My camera and accessories weight about 6 pounds. Having 6 pounds on you right hip puts your body a little out of balance, and I have more muscle fatigue (from my legs) as my body compensates for the weight. It was more severe the first few days ... by day nine the muscle strain is not to bad.

Style – I am hoping to be in some pictures at Disney. As such, I did not want a system that would be high profile. This system is fairly non-descript. I can pose myself next to my wife and block the black tongue on the belt or quickly remove the belt for the picture. Photobags and straps can also make sweat marks in the Florida summer heat and this system does not do that.

      Biggest issues –
First, I wear a leather belt everyday and the metal holster has scrapped it up. You may want to dedicate an old worn belt for this system, otherwise, you may regret the loss of a favorite belt like me.
Second and more importantly, occasionally my leg moves the picture mode selection knob when walking, which has messed up several of my shots. For example, I put the camera on manual and after walking a couple hundred feet the knob rotated to sports or landscape. When I picked up the camera I, of course, thought the knob was still on manual so the first few shots were a total loss. This has happened only twice and I am not sure why it happened those two times.
Third, I have not figured out how to carry extra lenses. I like to take a 75-300mm lens for long shots and this system is not designed to help me with that.

I have photographer friends who love the spider holster and encouraged me to get one. I like that it gives me the ability to shoot with multiple cameras and not lug around a camera bag but the belt is just too big for me! I'm an average sized female and I have the belt on the tightest setting and it still hangs off my waist by a couple of inches. I dont feel like it's very secure this way because it's loose and swings around.

I really like the product but just wish they made a female size for it.

Transfer weight from back to hip

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

I bought this for my new full frame DSLR, but ended up returning both to weight considerations (chronically bad back). My new lightweight a7 doesn't require the same weight transfer from back to hip. The SpiderPro was well constructed - very solid. I think my only concern if I'd held onto the camera/holster might have been the imbalance of transferring 5+ pounds to one hip. I might have wanted something to balance on the other side.

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

I use a 70-200 lens for a lot of my work. No secret it's long and heavy. The lens makes the camera an awkward load. Seems I'm always trying to keep it under control and out of the way. The equipment becomes a literal pain in the neck (or shoulder) on long jobs or walking from location to location.

Seeing the Spider holster in ads, I thought it looked a little odd the way a camera hung from the holster, but trust me the designers got it right. The holster is so well designed that I can lock a camera in the holster, and comfortably hike a mile to our local park with the camera strapped to my waist. It stays put and doesn't cause undue discomfort.

I prefer to let it ride off my left hip and sling a little lower on the right, just about mid cheek on the right. This puts the camera about quick draw for my right hand, and is a little more comfortable overall. Some might like it a bit higher around the waist. I found the waist strap caused some discomfort if it was strapped directly over my pants belt. So I hike my pants up and strap the holster just below it. Let the camera hang upside down with the lens turned in across your butt. I know it looks strange, but this keeps the equipment out of the way, and is the most comfortable. The designers knew what they were doing.

On location the camera slips in and out of the holster smoothly and easily. I was surprised how quickly I got accustomed to the process. You get two hand use to set up shots or pose subjects (carry on a conversation if you're a hand talker). Then you just reach down and pull the camera up to sight the image.

The camera locking mechanism operates with a thumb flick. On location I feel comfortable leaving it off. The holster is that secure. If I will be not shooting for a while, or if I'm changing locations I engage the lock. It wouldn't surprise me if you could hang upside down with the holster and not lose the camera.

I still have a shoulder strap attached to my camera which is a bit of an annoyance. The strap hangs and bounces around, and can get caught on stuff it you aren't careful. I will be switching to a hand or wrist strap now that I trust the Spider.

The Spider holster is secure. The locking systems for the camera in the holster, and the belt to the waist are solid. Having experienced the latching systems, I'm over worrying about losing the belt or camera to a latch failure. Also, I believe, they make it very difficult for a snatch and run robbery.

I'm 6'4' and in reasonable shape. I don't know how this might work for a slighter frame.

This is a wonderful invention. It is crazy-well designed. The dread of lugging, losing, or controlling that big beautiful wonderful load of a lens is gone.

The belt is simple to adjust and fits comfortably. The long velcro closure allows the user to attach accessories, like a lens bag, that will stay in place, which is handy for some accessories. You can forego the velcro and simply put the accessory over the entire belt for sliding action. The camera holding system is well made and secure. I trusted an expensive body and 70-200 lens. You will find using the system becomes second nature in a short time of use.

This holster is a really great one. It is easy to put your camera on and not worrying about it while walking around. I trust this with my Canon 40d and 70-200mm f/4L usm lens. The only thing that I didn't like was the waist adjuster it is Velcro so it takes a few extra minutes to adjust than if it was just a pull strap. I don't have a problem wearing a regular belt under this to support my pants which is needed because my pants did pull down a little when I use it. Overall I think it is a great holster that is easy and reliable to use, I like this a lot since I don't like the across the shoulder straps. I use it for photographing motocross so I am walking around all day and have no problems.

I am a petite female and was initially really worried about a) how it would fit me and b) how it would look. I used it for the first time last weekend and am hooked. I will never shoot another wedding with this and will probably end up getting the 2-Camera System. It is secure and allows me to function hands-free between shooting. If you're on the fence, at least give it a go.

I used the spider holster this past weekend at an event and I felt my camera was secure and off of my neck and shoulders for a full afternoon of shooting

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

I am a wedding photographer and previously used the Rapid Straps. They pulled my shoulders forward and left me with mid-back pain. Friends recommended the Spider Belt and it helps me so much!

I got the single system because I didn't think I would use two cameras enough to justify spending another $100.

The only thing I don't like getting used to it that it doesn't automatically lock your camera in place and I always forget to do that. Some people prefer it not lock for easy access though.

I need to get a hand strap for my camera now so I don't accidentally drop it! Another expense, but worth it.

Just what I needed for soccer games now that I have three lenses to choose from for my D3 and D300. (300mm 2.8, 70-300mm 3.5 and 70-200mm 2.8) At the very worst I can holster the single body while changing lenses if I do't take both cameras. Nice, safe setup. No fear that it will drop.

Wonderful and well built camera holster. Only thing I could think of that would improve it is a safety strap just incase the camera is dropped accidentally.

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

Ordered a competitive product, but it didn't seem secure. The SpiderPro is solid. Did order a holster-only (no belt) to add on, but the screw head twisted off. That's where buying from B&H just makes everything better - replacement on the way. This is a case where "shooting from the hip" is the right thing to do.

I was looking for an additional carrying option to go along with my Rapid Strap which I love. This is very comfortable, easy to use, and sturdy. You do have to be mindful of having clearance when walking so you don't smack the camera on walls but you get used to it fairly quickly.

I bought this because I am carrying my camera for 8 plus hours at weddings. I tried it a few times and it seems to work very well. Very high quality build. My only complaint so far is that my hip area is sore from the camera. I added some extra padding, so we'll see how it goes.

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

I am a full-time professional photographer who has been using the SpiderPro camera carrying system for more than four years. I use the system primarily when photographing weddings and engagement photography sessions (approximately fifty events per year). Hence I've used it for more than two hundred events thus far ranging from two hours to ten hours per each event.

I used to carry my pro cameras, flash units, and pro lenses via conventional camera straps, or in my hands. By switching to the SpiderPro camera holster system, I've found that my neck, back, shoulders, finger joints, and wrists no longer hurt the day after a long wedding the way they always used to. To me, this is a huge advantage of this camera carrying system over any other strap or harness-oriented system.

Secondly, the SpiderPro camera holster keeps your camera/s nice and securely affixed to your hip/s, hence your cameras do not float away from your body like a pendulum as they do when using camera straps or most harnesses as you move around. The built-in lock/s are a very nice feature, although I find I don't need to use them unless I am going to incur major vibrations while working.

This system is exceptionally well thought out, is made of excellent materials, and is extremely durable.

I've also used the SpiderPro while mountain climbing for many hours this past summer, and my Canon 5D MK IIs carried very comfortably and securely.

The company that created this camera carrying system also recently came out with truly unique and well designed weather-resistant lens pouches (complete with waterproof zippers, integrated dust/rain covers, and tether included so you don't misplace your rear lens element cap) which attach to the SpiderPro belt to provide ultra-fast access to your lenses when working.

I strongly recommend this system to any professional or serious photographer who wants the best possible method of carrying cameras, lenses, and other accessories (while substantially reducing or eliminating repetitive wear on their upper body).

Comments about Spider Camera Holster SpiderPro Single Camera System:

I was at B+H when in the city, and you know you just have to stop in an look around. They had a large display for the Spider Holster Pro and I looked at it, asked a few questions and then met a guy who shot for the NYPD and had D3's I think with 500mm lenes., very large. I have a D-800 and D600. We both tried them on and walked around with them and we were very impressed.
After I received mine at home, I used it at a few gigs and outside walking around in the City. Very comfortable and no pain. As stated in other reviews, be sure not to hit your camera when walking through a door, a table or chair. Basically, be careful and you will love this holster. Did I forget to mention it's extremely well made. No second rate materials here.
