Product Highlights
  • Roof Prism
  • Fully Multicoated
  • ED Glass Lenses
  • Open Bridge Design
  • Waterproof and Fogproof
  • Anti-Reflection, Phase2 and V-Max Silver

The Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular from Vanguard offers an ergonomic, open-bridge design with a large, ridged, central focusing knob for less weight and greater comfort. The fully multicoated ED glass lenses reduce color dispersion; provide high resolution color, increased light transmission, contrast and clarity. Vanguard's V-Max Silver, Anti-reflection and P2 Phase coatings provide near perfect light reflection which offers brighter, crisper images with sharper contrast.

The 56° angle of view, BAK4 roof prisms, and plethora of lens coatings make this binocular the choice for someone who values low weight and high optical quality. Nitrogen-charged and o-ring sealed, the Endeavor ED is waterproof and fogproof to take on challenging weather conditions.

As an 8x42, this Endeavor ED binocular provides a reasonable degree of magnification in a relatively compact device. The viewing angle is comfortably wide enough for distant scanning of shorebirds and unapproachable wildlife, and a very generous eye relief of 19.0 mm allows users a view of the binoculars' entire field.

ED glass lenses render the full spectrum of color
Ergonomic, open-bridge design for a comfortable and attractive form factor
BAK4 roof prisms with P2 phase-coated provide high contrast, high clarity viewing
Twist-up eyecups and a singular ocular dioptic corrector simplify sharing of the unit
56° angle of view (AAoV) allows more landscape to be contemplated with one appraisal
V-Max Silver, P2 Phase, and Anti-Reflection coatings ensure excellent contrast, brightness and clarity
Fully multicoated optics mean multiple layers on all air to glass surfaces for a brighter, higher-contrast image with less eyestrain

I wanted to get good quality, moderately-priced binoculars for bird/wildlife watching. After reading online reviews, I tried the Nikon Monarch 5 and the Canon image stabilized 8x25 IS and 10x30 IS. While the Canon image stabilization technology works very well, the image quality (brightness and color rendition) fell well short of the Nikon (non image stabilized) so I ditched the idea of IS in favor of higher image quality. Based on very positive reviews of the Nikon Monarch 7 on various birding sites I was all set to buy their 8x42 model but then I came across the review of the Endeavor 8x42 on birdwatching. and started poking around other sites and found more glowing reviews for the Endeavors. From what I could tell, the Endeavors seem ed to be more or less equal to the Nikon Monarch 7 in terms of magnification, light gathering, color, chromatic aberration (they both use ED glass to reduce chromatic aberration), build quality, eye relief, etc, etc. The big difference though is that the Endeavor is HALF THE PRICE of the Nikon after the mail-in rebate! Given that the Endeavor was going to cost only $$, I figured that it was worth taking a chance and trying out the "no-name" vs the "brand name". After all, if they sucked, I could always send them back to B&H. Well, when I received the binoculars and tried them out and, I was, to say the least, very, very happy with my choice. Likes:1. Excellent image quality. Bright, excellent resolution, great color, no fringing anywhere.2. Excellent build quality. Focus ring feels "just right" and is quick and accurate. It also focuses really close which is nice.3. Very nice adjustable eye relief system (twist to retract, with locking positions)4. Excellent locking ring mechanism for right eye diopter adjustment.5. EVERYTHING included in the package. Really nice strap with quick release clips and a wide and squishy neoprene (wetsuit rubber) strap for your neck. Good soft case and even a cleaning cloth.6. Lifetime no quibble warranty (so says the manufacturer).7. The price and the value you're getting at that price.Dislikes:There are a some small (tiny?) things that are a bit annoying with the Endeavors.1. there's a small screw on cap that covers the back of the axle for the focus ring that occasionally works itself loose. I have to tighten it every now and then. It's just a cosmetic cover but still... 2. the rubber caps that cover the front elements could be a bit better quality. They work fine, but I fear that they'll become loose over time. The eyepiece caps are great though. So I saved myself about $250 compared with the Nikon Monarch 7 and am pretty sure that the more expensive Nikon is probably no better (though I've not had a chance to do a side by side comparison). One day I'd love to compare my Endeavors against a Leica, Swarovski or Zeiss and see if the those high-end models are really worth 10x the price. I'm guessing not. Overall I'm super happy with this purchase and would recommend them to a friend without hesitation.

I'm a middle age male and my main use for this bino is for big game hunting with general viewing of wildlife and outdoor landscape as secondary uses. I wear eyeglasses 100% of the time, and have all my life, so eye relief is very important to me. I own several binoculars now, and like to find products that give lots of bang for the buck.

I tested this binocular versus several others that I own and it came out near the top, although IMO it was not as good as other reviewers claimed. For example, the resolution can't compare to my Nikon 10x42 SE, and it barely tied my 20+ year old B&L 8x36 Custom.

My resolution test used the standard USAF target (vertical & horizontal black bars of varying widths) set up at 25 yards. The five binoculars were positioned on top of a 'sandbag' shooting rest for a rock steady viewing platform. The binos were tested several times over a two week period under varying light conditions, and the results were recorded and averaged for a final score. In addition to the two binos mentioned above and the subject Vanguards, the other test binoculars were a Minox 6x32 roof and a Leupold Wind River 7x30 porro, both with independent focus eyepieces.

To my eyes, the Vanguard's low light performance was very good but not great. It edged the Leupold 7x30, tied the 20+ year old B&L 8x36 Customs, and was slightly bested by the Minox 6.5x32 and the Nikon 10x42 SE. The differences weren't much but I expected more after reading the rave reviews about the fully MC ED lens in these Vanguards. IMO, they don't live up to the hype.

One other thing I would like to mention is the feel of roof prism bins. I much prefer the feel of a porro prism bino over that of most roof prisms, and that was certainly true in this case. Why? Here's one example, once the barrels on this Vanguard were adjusted for my IP distance, the fingers on each hand kept interfering with the ones on the opposite side, and it was a challenge to avoid bumping the sensitive focus knob when I changed my grip.

      Some positive notes:
I like the fit of the lens covers and that they're made of a soft, flexible, rubbery compound. Too many lens covers on binos are made of hard plastic materials that are stiff, inflexible and noisy, and a real PITA to deal with in cold weather.

This bino comes with its own nice wide carrying strap, and the decent case has a strap attached directly to it.

      Conclusion:
A nice binocular given the low sale price and the manufacturer's rebate. However, I wouldn't pay the regular Internet price for this bino now given the performance I have observed and the lack of a track record as to the long term durability of this made in China bino.

      great low light performance

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

Bought these for hunting so they needed to be good in low light and they are. I can't believe these are made in China or the price I got them for on this site. I could still see will enough to identify targets for about 45 minutes after sunset. Legal shooting time is 30 minutes after sunset here so these are more than adequate for my needs. Very clear and don't strain my eyes like my last pair -bushnell trophy. The warranty is excellent also. Thrilled with my purchase

High quality binoculars for the price.
I had read several positive reviews about the optics of the Endeavor ED 8x42's. In hand the binoculars are comfortable. The focus wheel is responsive without unnecessary play. the images are clear, bright and well resolved. I was pleasantly surprised by their quality. Highly recommended.

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

First I am a wildlife photographer ( my old age hobby ). So I have some high quality lenses. I did not want to spend allot of money on bin's. I had a pair of high dollar Nikon's and broke them. I am pretty hard on bin's.

This pair arrived from B&H promptly. They are better than I expected. The view is very good. About 75% tack sharp. 25% falling off. But not bad. A pleasant surprise.
I really like the locking adj for the right barrel.
They are heavy, but for the price and view it is not an issue what so ever.

The only thing I don't like is the fast focus. It is really too fast for me to get tack sharp. Very fast. You have to fiddle a bit to get it just right.

Very satisfied. I live in the rain forest so? My last pair lasted 3 years before I broke them. I have another pair of cheap Nikon action. 3 years old, now with fungus pretty bad in one barrel. So will have to wait and see how these hold up.

Based on much online research plus recommendations from the tech guys at B&H Photo, I purchased these Endeavor ED 8x42 Binoculars. I couldn't be more pleased with their performance, and the pricing plus rebate make them a great value also. Precise focus, clear, bright images, and an overall feel of quality stand out. They offer a stable view while handheld, have good eye relief, and the neck strap and carrying case are very good. For bird watching, nature observing, and general scenic use, these are simply excellent.

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

I am new to this class of Binos, I have a 10 X 21 compact pair that I will probably never use again. I bought them for a recent trip tpo the Galapagos islands and was very impressed by the clarity of the image and ease of focusing.

I'm into photography and have been wanting a pair of binoculars but never could decide on what to buy.
After reading a review from birdwatchers and they gave this pair a 5 star,I went for it and have no regrets they are truly amazing, clear and responsive as well as comfortable in your hands.
Don't hesitate if you're looking for binoculars.

I've been wanting a pair for some time and don't mind paying for quality, but the range goes from $150 to $1500 which becomes confusing.
So when I came accross a review of 5* rating on the Vanguard from Bird watchersdigest I was sold.
And worth every penny, clear lenses HD and extremely comfortable in your hands.

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

After using a cheap $20 set of 8x21 binoculars for many years, I've decided to spend some extra cash on a more 'decent' set. I had the hardest time deciding between these 8x42 and the similar Vanguard Endeavor 10x42. I opted for the 8x due to my shaky hands and wanting a wider exit pupil. After receiving and using these for a little while now, all I can say is WOW!The image from these binos are super sharp and is really really clear. I hardly notice any chromatic aberration and even when I do, it's only because I'm looking through the lens at an angle and not directly centered on the image circle. Using them at night is equally a joy. Things are nice and bright (relative to daytime) and details are crisp.Build quality is also top notch. The rubber housing feels solid and can take a beating if subjected. Eye relief is superb and the locking dioptic adjustment is greatly appreciated since I don't like accidentally moving it on my old binoculars. Open bridge design also makes holding a lot better. Strap is nicely designed and is very comfortable.Overall I am very impressed with these optics and would highly recommend them to anyone. If you're on the fence about these, just buy them because you will not be disappointed. What made the purchase even better is that Vanguard currently has a $ mail in rebate.

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

I use the binoculars for bird watching. I was going to buy a pair of Nikon binoculars at Cabela's when the salesman said they were out of stock. He showed me the Endeavor ED 8X42 binoculars and i was sold!! I shopped online and found that B & H had a much better price and ordered them. They are bright and crystal clear just as all the reviews said. These are slightly heavier than the Nikon Monarch 5's but the build quality and lifetime warranty with a "no questions asked" warranty policy won me over!!! Thank you Vanguard for such a great pair of binoculars!!

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

I needed a pair of binoculars to take to Kenya. I have a nice camera with a good lens so I didn't want to pay a lot for what might be redundant. I found a safari and a birder site that both recommended the vanguard binoculars and with the mail in rebate they are even a better deal.

The work great and feel well made. The instructions are odd but how hard is it to use binoculars? I am pleased but will know more once I get to Africa.

We are planning an Alaska cruise and decided to upgrade are aging binocs. These are fantastic. They make everything look like an HD TV screen. I was concerned about spending so much money on a product I won't use very often, but now feel it was well worth the investment. With a lifetime gaurentee, this IS the last pair of binoculars you will ever have to purchase.

Comments about Vanguard Endeavor ED 8x42 Binocular:

Excellent optics. Good feel. Great to use with glasses. Easy to focus. I will use them for bird watching and general nature viewing. I haven't found anything that I don't like about them.
