The Vanguard Auctus Plus 283AT 3-Section Aluminum Tripod (Legs Only) is a heavy-duty yet lightweight tripod that supports loads over 30 lb and facilitates extremely precise height adjustments by way of its advanced geared center column. It's a sturdy, versatile support for almost any head, camera & lens combination, for use in the studio or outdoors.

Setup of the 283AT is easy, as anti-rotation legs allow both of a leg's locks to be turned with a single twist of the wrist. These secure locks seal out dust and sand to ensure continued reliable performance even in adverse conditions. Leg scales help you ensure that the three legs are extended to the same height. With the legs and the center column fully extended, the tripod reaches a maximum height of 66.9".

The center column extends via the ultra-smooth Extreme Support Height Positioning (ESHP) wheel system, a dual-function wheel gear that has a finer or faster effect depending on whether its handle is flipped in or out. Further, there's a large friction-control knob underneath the canopy, which also enables control over the speed of the column's extension. The ESHP wheel system both facilitates extremely precise height adjustments and supports extremely heavy loads.

The tripod's all-terrain feet convert from anti-rust spikes to angled, textured rubber for smooth surfaces and other terrains. In addition, snow shoes are included; these "overshoes" help the tripod's feet from sinking into snow and sand.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283AT 3-Section Aluminum Tripod (Legs Only):

I wrote a short review a month back, but I'd like to update my comments after having used the tripod more extensively. While I would not describe this tripod as a "truck", is is more solid than one might first think. I've shot many days of commercial assignments now with the tripod and had no problems with vibration or unwanted movement. The geared center column is especially important to me, and this works very well, and smoothly. The legs unlock easily, just took a little getting used to after having click lock tripod legs on my previous tripod. I like the length indicators. The tripod folds up compactly, and with the BBH-200 ballhead attached it still fits properly into the tripod travel bag that came supplied. The matt black paint finish is nicely done.A couple of issues I want to mention: the little plastic folding handle to control the geared center column is nice, but I'm concerned it will be bumped or caught on something and break. Perhaps Vanguard can think of how to beef up this little crank. The large rubber feat that come with the tripod I think are designed for use on snow or web surfaces. Trouble with them is the camera vibrates on the tripod every time you touch it. So, I only use the standard hard rubber feet. Will probably never use the large feet. I do not have any tripod vibration when using the standard, hard rubber feet, even when the camera is in 'portrait' orientation. Also must comment on the documentation. This was very frustrating. I would much prefer a written booklet detailing use of the tripod (and the ballhead). They supplied a folding pamphlet with image symbols only, which I found very obscure and confusing.Other than these two issues this is a very nice tripod, and a good buy for the money. I would pay for in the future for an even "beefier" version if Vanguard ever chooses to make one. I don't mind the extra weight as I want a rock solid support for full-frame DSLR's with heavy zooms and other attachments in place.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283AT 3-Section Aluminum Tripod (Legs Only):

I like this tripod, but it definitely is not as rock solid as reviews had implied. I've used a Manfrotto aluminum tripod for many years. Very heavy, center braced, solid. Something of a pain to use, but don't have to worry about camera movement with long exposures.

Hoped the new Vanguard was just as solid/stable, but it is not.

The finish and controls are very nice, however.

With the large rubber feet attached, my Nikon D800 with 24-120 zoom wobbles on the ballhead. Don't think I'm going to achieve the required sharpness for HDR long-exposure images.

Wish Vanguard made a sturdier tripod than this.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283AT 3-Section Aluminum Tripod (Legs Only):

This was a great looking tripod, and it appeared to be very solid. However, the bubble level had been glued in crooked. It was useless. I was told I could break it out of the mounting well and glue in a new one. I suppose that could work, but that thing is in there very securely. I decided to return the tripod instead. This minor problem, to me, indicated a lack of attention to detail by the manufacturer, so I would have been worried about the things that really matter. B&H has a really great price on it, and I'm sure you could be very happy with it, as long as you understand that you are not buying a tripod for backpacking in the Rockies. It is substantial, and I like that.

Comments about Vanguard Auctus Plus 283AT 3-Section Aluminum Tripod (Legs Only):

The leg adjustments markings help a lot and there's just enough tension that the legs don't drop to full extension on their own when you loosen the twist lock like they do on my well used Husky. I also like the fact the legs are keyed so they can't spin. My only complaint is the cheap cover wouldn't fully cover the Manfrotto 3-way head I got with it. I'll use it for my spotting scope for the first time next weekend.
