Comments about MXL FR-301 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone:

By specs, this microphone is the best available (that I could find) currently under about $, with a low impedance which allows long runs, without too much loss in the high end, decent sensitivity, S/N ratio and dynamic range, and a medium max SPL. You could think of this as a cheap version of the Sennheiser MKH 8070 ... which costs 1700.Practically, I ran the mic through 5 feet of cheap xlr, and "stuff" sounded pretty good, but dialogue felt empty and transparent. When running through 255 ft of mixed quality xlr over 5 cables, obviously an extreme condition, there was a very noticeable loss in the high end. Also handling noise is very easily transmitted from cable to microphone, so much so that I am working on making a DIY connbox, or may buy the Rycote Connbox 1 if need be. The pickup pattern is very wide, a definite mix between Lobar and Supercardioid. Also, there is a noticeable pitch change as a sound moves off axis, which is commonly found on many shotgun mics. The mic sounds very good for "stuff", but dialogue is somewhat disappointing, but remember, THIS IS A CHEAP MICROPHONE, if you have the money for a Sennheiser MKH 8070, then why are you even here? But if you're like me, where quality is not paramount, and budget is very important, this mic is the best option that you will find.

Comments about MXL FR-301 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone:

I am using the microphone as part of a lecture capture system in a classroom at a large University. I have it set up so that I can include questions that are asked by the student and it does a great job picking up all of the students, this ability really enhances the recordings I make for our classes.
