Product Highlights
  • For EF 300mm & 400mm f/2.8L IS II Lenses
  • Drop-In Filter, Outer Ring for Rotation
  • Minimize Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze and Blue Cast in Landscapes
  • Enhances Color and Tonal Saturation

The PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter from Canon is designed for use with the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lenses, which accept rear-mounted drop-in filters. The filter is rotated from a ring on the outside of the filter mount. You do not have to remove the filter to use it. The glass is secured within a strong metal frame that slips in and out of the rear mount with ease. The degree of polarization can be seen through the viewfinder of your camera as you rotate the filter.

Circular polarizers help to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. This results in a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage, as well as clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions.

Reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Lessens haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Designed specifically for use with the following lenses, which accept a 52mm drop-in filter:
  • Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM
  • Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Filter's design permits rotating via the outside of the drop-in mount.

Comments about Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter:

I got one of these in a recently purchased 600f/4L IS. The loss of light in a f/4 lens is significant in my opinion. I had to use much higher than I'd like ISO for my taste in sunny conditions to get fast shutter speeds. Resulting in softer detail on birds and such. Not what I expected.

I also find the over saturation of blues to be less realistic than I want to deal with. Focus with a 1.4x extender is slower than it should be as well due to the loss of light. I put a stock clear filter in it's place.

Nice construction, easy to use, but I don't think I'll be using it much on the 600. I might use it on my 300f/2.8 though.

If you need a CPL and can work with the loss of light, this is a good product.

Comments about Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter:

I just bought the New Canon 200-400 1.4X Zoom lens and during a recent shoot I noticed a lot of glare off the windows and hoods of the race cars I was shooting. (Not due to the lens) I purchased the Drop-In Circular Polarizer and it worked great!

You simply remove the factory carrier with the clear filter installed and drop in the polarizer. There is a small wheel on the top which is easy to locate and rotate the filter reducing the amount of reflected glare. It's not cheap but works well.

This drop in filter was a great way to go to make it easier to keep the filter clean and protected. I particularly like being able to adjust it with the thumb screw rather than reaching to the front of the lens.

Comments about Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter:

This is an easy-to-use polarizer that comes in a nice, solid case. For bird photography it helps get the glare off the water and for birds in trees it helps get some of the sheen off the leaves, increasing the depth of color. Like all polarizers it takes away light, so it's more useful in brighter light. It snaps in and out reasonably easy - not effortless - but good. If Canon had put round bevels on some of the edges it might self-align better when installing but that would be extra credit. I particularly like the arrow on top showing which way faces front. I wish the default filter that comes with the 500mm f/4 II also had this arrow. I'll probably draw one on. If you shoot birds on water this filter is an absolute must.

If it was the same color as my Series I lens, I would give it 5 stars. Otherwise it's exactly what you expect, an internal polarizing filter with an external wheel you turn to control the rotation of the polarizer. Works great in 300mm f/2.8 IS series 1 lens. Very nice quality.

Polarizers are a great addition to any kit, and this one is a quick and simple alternative to bulky and costly matte box rigs.

I shot a lot of skiing and snowboarding with the Canon 200 f/2 and 500 f/4 II. The simplicity of the drop in filters are amazing, easy to use and store and produce top notch images as one would expect. I highly recommend this filter to anyone shooting a Canon "Great white" near or around water (or any of its other forms).

Comments about Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter:

I use on a 300L, its neat and handy and its the only way you can use a circular polariser on a large tele. For 300 you get to use on travel and landscape shots, so this filter is useful. On 400 and up I doubt you will use it for landscape shots anymore and more on wildlife in which I think won't be necessary anymore.

I'm not sure of Canon filters but with the same price I can get a much better filter brand at the same size. Of course the mount is an issue and how you control the polarisation is another. Overall I think its too pricy.

Comments about Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter:

This filter was specifically made for the filter holder in your Canon 300mm or 400mm f/2.8 lens. The quality is superb. It makes switching between a polarizer and a UV filter a snap. You use your right index finger to turn a small wheel at the top right of the filter to adjust the amount of polarization. If you've used the old style filter holder for these lenses you have experienced taking the filter out, turning it until you achieve the polarization and then try to slip the holder back into the lens without moving it. Good luck with that! With the new 52mm Drop-in Circular Polarizing Filter you set it on the fly and never have to pull the filter holder out of the lens. I'm glad I bought it. It's a real time-saver and the resulting photos are remarkable.

I have been typically using this for birding with the 400mm DO. The quick, firm istallation has been touble free.

As a landscape and wildlife photographer I have been waiting for this a long time. Was out of stock a long time. There is a little wheel to turn to rotate the filter...works like a dream. Reflections are gone and clouds just pop out of the sky. The case is top notch as it protects the filter as well as being convenient. Just drop filter in and adjust the wheel then shoot.
I use it in my Canon 300mm,500mm and 800mm lenses.
Down side...well has none that I can find.

I use my 500 mostly for wildlife but found some great scenics with it last year in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I really missed having a polarizer for it. I'm really impressed with how well this works in the 500 and how smooth it is. My only regret is that I didn't get it sooner. Luckily, we're headed back again this year!
