The Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack from Tamrac is truly named well for it represents the next step in backpack design. This unique pack serves dual functions as a traditional backpack and can readily and easily be converted to a sling-style bag.

Your gear is accessible through three access points - one in the front and two through the sides - all secured with zippers. The pack is strong and durable as a backpack should be with plenty of room for all sorts of gear including a 17.3" (43.9cm) laptop that is held in its own padded compartment. The harness system permits you to cross-connect a shoulder strap (right or left) to make it a sling pack. The strap not used is neatly stored using Tamrac's Tuck-a-Way system.

This pack holds everything from your DSLR with up to an 8.75" (22.2cm) attached lens as well as an additional 4-5 lenses, flash to the aforementioned 17.3" laptop. More than that, the separate top section of the pack can be used for personals such as a light jacket or even your lunch. Your gear is stored in the lower half - safely segregated from the top half.

Access to everything is easy via the front or either of the side doors. There are interior mesh pockets in which you can store small items like batteries, iPhone or memory cards. You can even strap your tripod on the back using the QuickClip attachment system that holds two of the legs securely. The tripod remains centered and balanced for ease of transport. On the right side, you'll find a removable rain jacket that can be quickly deployed when the weather turns sour.

Triple Access System
The Triple Access System allows access to gear through either side door when the pack is still worn over one shoulder or through the front panel when the pack is removed
Convert to a Sling Pack
To convert to a sling pack, simply cross-connect a single shoulder strap (red to red for carrying on the right shoulder or blue to blue for carrying on the left shoulder). The other shoulder strap is easily tucked away in Tamrac's Tuck-A-Way harness system
Foam-Padded Computer Pocket
In back, a completely foam-padded laptop pocket holds most 17.3" screen laptops and others up to 17.5 x 11.0 x 1.5" (44.5 x 27.9 x 3.8cm) in size
Foam-Padded Top Compartment
A large foam-padded top compartment provides storage for a light jacket, lunch, or other photo accessories. A mesh pocket in the back keeps small accessories separate and secure, while a Windowpane-Mesh pocket on the inside door panel holds additional small items
QuickClip Tripod Attachment System
A tripod is cradled (centered and balanced) securely with Tamrac's QuickClip tripod attachment system while the lower Tripod Foot Pocket holds two tripod legs secure
Side Pockets and Rain Cover
Each side has a zipper-closing pocket for accessories like a phone or iPod. The right pocket contains a removable rain cover, which can be slipped over the pack during extreme weather

I realized that this was getting long so I'll put the cliff notes at the top and more detail below, I hope this helps!Pros:See below, I love this bag!Everyday size but still holds a ton of gear. Still will fit on an airplane in carry-on, probably under the seat too.Sling strap options.Waist strap to help with the weight but can be tucked away when you don't want it.Camera and lenses easily accessible from three openings.First bag I've found that will hold up to a 17" laptop without being huge.Discrete styling. Strange pro I know but I don't want my bag announce "expensive gear inside".Cons:Straps could be a little wider. If you're a really serious photographer with lots of lenses, flashes, multiple camera bodies, then this isn't for you. It just wasn't designed for that much gear.Zippers aren't as nice as the Tamrac Expedition 8x I had previously but will probably hold up fine.Someone else mentioned that a large tripod would be awkward to carry on this and I would agree. It would sit pretty high.Won't fit really large lenses but if you're that serious you're probably not looking at this bag anyway.-------------------I'm a serious hobbyist and finding a bag that fits my needs has been a long search, years even! I love to have my camera with me all the time because you never know when you'll run into something cool. I like to bring my camera with me to work so I have it handy. Sometimes I use it at work too.Problem is I also have an iPad, MacBook Pro, and other junk that I carry around. Finding a camera bag that also accommodates a 15" laptop used to force you into a HUGE bag. Not sure why Kata and other big companies really seemed to drop the ball there for a long time but it was really short sighted. I would find all of these great bags that were a nice size and would hold all my gear but just didn't fit a 15" laptop, only 13" ones at best. I ended up going through a large Kata bag and a Tamrac Expedition 8x before finally finding this bag. Those were just too big for me and not practical for every day use unless you're a pro photographer. This really is for people like me, semi-serious, one camera body, a few lenses, laptop, accessories, backup point and shoot camera, small tripod, and some misc stuff. I love this bag! Has all the features I've been wanting ever since I got my first DSLR almost 8 years ago.For me it's the perfect mix of general storage and camera specific storage. The camera specific area has plenty of storage and is customizable. I love the access from three sides and all the little pockets for memory and lens caps. Once you get used to the clear and mesh pockets that let you see inside without opening them you can't live without them, so much easier to search for stuff. The only change I would make with the camera storage is to make all the pockets clear. The side opening flap pockets aren't clear and I know I'll forget stuff is in there one day, ha ha. Not the end of the world but would be nice. The general storage had me a little concerned that it might not be enough but it turns out to be plenty. There's two outside pockets with storage for things you want quick access too. One loses some space for the rain cover but is still useable. In the top main compartment you get a large clear pocket on the flap which is nice. There's a mesh pocket to help organize some stuff then the rest of the area is wide open. I managed to fit everything I needed in there no problem.I could see getting one or two small padded bags to put inside there to help organize things a little better. Since it's one big opening it can be hard to search for little stuff like memory cards or tools. If you have two camera bodies you could use this space for a body with a smaller lens attached and use the camera storage for the camera with the larger lens attached. Just a thought. The laptop compartment fits up to a 17" laptop. As long as it's a slimmer laptop like a MacBook then there's plenty of space. A 17" Alienware that's 2.5" thick will not fit, ha ha. I'd guess up to 1.25" thick will fit fine. It's probably designed around a MacBook or the newer PC equivalents that are just as thin.I haven't played with the straps and the sling options yet but I love that it's available. I like how there's the waist strap but at the same time you can tuck it into a pocket for short trips from the car to the office. I also like how the looks don't scream CAMERA BACKPACK, ha ha. If you don't have a tripod on the outside it's very discrete. The straps could be a little wider. Fully loaded it's a decent amount of weight and wider straps would be a little more comfortable.

Bag makers never seem to have wide enough spaces to handle the larger diameter of faster lenses, they also never seem to leave enough room for having the lens hood reversed on the lens. This is not the case with the Tanrac Evolution 9 bag. There is plenty of room and by playing with the partitions it can easily handle a pro body and four lenses, maybe more. I bought this bag primarily to use as a backpack, loaded up it is just too heavy to use as a sling. The strap arrangement is adequate and I was pretty comfortable after carrying it a couple of hours. The zippers are not of the highest quality but with reasonable care they should last the life of the bag.The tripod strap is barely long enough to get around one tripod leg.

I use this to carry my equipment with me at my daughters volleyball tournaments. It's nice to have one bag that holds everything & you have a little space in the top compartment for your personal stuff (snacks, water bottle).
You do have to get used to how far the pack sticks out behind you. And with a tripod, it's even farther out. Be careful when walking by people, so you dont wack them with your bag.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

This bag is huge - the main interior is roomy and customizable with the velco dividers. A couple extra would have been nice - I added two from other bags to get the interior I wanted. I can now carry my 5D3 with the 24-105 on it, a 70-200, at least 3 other lenses and various filters, cable release, chargers, etc. all in the main compartment and still have the upper compartment for other things (phone, snacks, etc.). Easy to redesign it depending on what I need for the particular trip or shoot. Lots of little pockets inside the flaps for extra CF cards, a card reader, etc. This bag and a rolling carry-on for clothes and you can pretty much go anywhere for a couple weeks without checking a bag.

I love the side access so I can get to my camera without putting the bag down. I like that you can strip it down and remove things I likely won't use, like the shoulder "satchel" pads or the across the chest strap. The waist strap folds neatly into the lining so you can tuck that away too.

I would have given this 5 stars, but the shoulder straps are just not quite there. They're a bit narrow compared to my other backpack style bags. They have lined the inside with a leather, which probably makes the straps stronger, but also makes them stiffer and less comfortable. I can see the seam and edge created by this extra layer chafing if you're slinging the bag around a lot Hopefully, these will soften over time. Also, a mesh outer sleeve/pocket for a water bottle would be a good addition.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

This bag will be used by me both for transport of equipment to the shooting locale and carrying equipment while there. These are two separate and distinct functions. This bag is flexible enough to do both. The additional depth (compared to the Evolution 8) allows longer lenses to be packed vertically, so more goes in the bag. Side and top access makes two canera bodies with lenes attached accessable. Weighs only a few grams more than the Evolution 8. Would be better if lighter waterproof fabric with padded materials and sealed zippers but it was the best solution available at a reasonable price for my needs.

I love this pack, it's well built. The bottom compartment holds my camera, flash, 3 unattached lenses and is easy to accesse from all sides. The top is great for putting anything you might need for a day hike or walk arround. Having the option to use it as a sling pack or standard backpack with hip belt is nice. Also it comes with a rain over, which is great for thoose stormy days. The only thing that I could say that it does have is a memory card organizer.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

Note to the reader: I own a lot camera bags and I'm just real particular about how I carry my gear. This makes rating the bag difficult. Although the manufacturer did a great job it's usually my own lack of insight into myself that makes a buying a photo bag useful to me or not.

            Pros:
            1. Day pack design is very useful when hauling camera gear and other stuff. Having only one bag is very helpful.
            2. Very well constructed, which is why I buy so much Tamrac stuff.

            Cons:
            1. The design is supposed to be a happy compromise between carry and accesses. For me (and me alone) it is not. I need to change lenses too often and in order to do that I end up taking the pack completely off a setting it on the ground or other surface.
            2. The tripod carrier doesn't work for me. My tripods, even the lightest ones, pull back too hard for this arrangement to be comfortable.
            3. The waist strap is unpadded. I use a tarmac padded waist belt with this pack and it works great. But the one that came with it is too skimpy for me.

My advice is that if you think you can swing the pack around successfully to access your lenses than this is a pack you should consider. Or if you need a daypack to carry your gear without tripod and some other things then fine, it's a good pack. But for me, I leave it at home more than I take it out.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

I very much feel that my camera equipment is safe in here. It has plenty of space for a dSLR with a grip and all my lenses, flash,ect... It also has a laptop sleeve, but I try to use this as a briefcase although it almost has enough room if you wanted to. Great purchase. I'm happy with it.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

I bought this backpack to carry my gear on live action film shoots and for general location photography. This design, with it's many zips and entry points allows me to arrange my equipment the way I want it depending on my needs.

Highlights are the dual side pockets to house a camera at either side of the bag, the ability to wear it as a traditional backpack or single, over the shoulder strap and the waterproof cover.

You know you have a good product when you're not complaining about it or being frustrated by its functionality. This is a well thought out camera bag that's hard wearing.

I love the ability to carry this bag as either a backpack (2 straps) or sling (1 strap), and choose which side it slings to (right or left).
The access to the main compartment is possible three ways, right, middle and left which is useful too.
I didn't use it all that much yet to notice any things that aren't so great yet.

Comments about Tamrac Evolution 9 Photo/Laptop Sling Backpack:

Bought this pack for my 7D and assorted lenses, flashes, and gear after twice accidentally spilling the contents of my Canon gadget bag (you know, forgot it wasn't latched and grabbed it by the top handle). I had no idea how heavy it would be when full, but the pack rides nicely on my shoulders. I have a large Pelican case that holds everything, but I needed something more portable/manageable for location work. Deciding what not to pack is the hard part. Current pack list: 7D with mounted 70-200mm f/2.8L, 16-35mm f/2.8L, 50mm f/1.4, 18-200mm IS,(2)580ex flash, Powershot G12, and assorted batteries, PocketWizard transmitter/receivers, fliters, etc. Took it on a flight recently as carry-on... checked it (nervously) on the return. It's a beast fully loaded. Still getting used to how to best pack and access the equipment.
