  • For Nikon DSLRs

The Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs, with a Guide Number of 198 (ISO 100 in feet at 105mm), provides photographers with the power needed to light up a wide variety of shooting situations. It provides an easy-to-read, two-way color display which helps ensure intuitive operations. The Mark II has been upgraded from the previous model, with a re-designed zoom head that has a new transmission motor that significantly reduces the operating noise to a volume level of 70dB or less, a new metal foot for the hot-shoe mount, and a flash tube with increased heat tolerance. The fill-in sub-flash power ratio range has been increased, now offering a range from 1/1 to 1/128, and the high performance wireless sensors now cover the distance of 82' (25 meters).

The Mark II also has auto-rotation so it stays upright even when turned for vertical framing. It features the "MY TTL" mode for adjustable default level, and a manual motor zoom of 24-105mm. It is designed with clip-on capabilities, built-in wide-angle diffuser and catch-light reflector for added versatility. It's powered by four AA batteries (not included), and when it is operated with a Nissin Power Pack Pro 300 (not included), users have 300 full-power flashes. It boasts a recycling time of 0.1-5.5 seconds.  Compatible with i-TTL/i-TTL-BL.

The Di866 Mark II is a high-powered flash unit, great for serious photographers who will appreciate its features.

The flash has been very good at a substantial price difference compared to the nikon sb900.

I have only had the product about two weeks but I tested it remote and on camera the day it arrived and everything worked fine. The user interface is easy to comprehend.

Last week I put the unit through a substantial use at my church's Vacation Bible School. I took 80+ portrait shots using a two flash set up with my sb600 and the Di866. Everything worked fine. After the portraits over the next four nights I shot a variety of flash situations including bounce and fill. The Di866 worked well in every case.

Even though I have only a limited use so far I am very satisfied with the Di866.

This flash is an excellent alternative to an SB900 in all aspects except 1... it overheats quickly. 10-20 flashes can make it overheat and unusable. It appears that there is no way to turn off the warning like in a SB900. I probably will order the SB900 instead next time.

Comments about Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs:

First, I would like to say that for the price, this is a fantastic strobe. I use it mainly for portraits and wedding photography. The top reasons to purchase this flesh are (1) The Price (compared to the cost of the Nikon model, (2) The flash power. This little unit puts out a lot of power, and has no problem lighting distant subjects even if you bounce or diffuse the light source and (3) The menus are simple and easy to navigate.

Things that are not so great about the flash.
              (1) Recharge time is not as swift as Nikon models
              (2) Noisy. Flash emits a high pitched sound consistently when powered on. In a crowded environment this is not really noticeable, but it's still there. Having talked to other photographers who use this flash, I've come to understand this is normal for this unit.

Comments about Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs:

This is an update on the "Lone Ranger" review that I recently wrote. The flash malfunctioned on me and I had to send it back. I've got a new one (same model) coming today, but I'm very concerned about it malfunctioning as well.

The first one stopped syncronizing correctly when mounted on my Nikon D7100. I tried resetting the flash and the camera, but it still wouldn't fire correctly. It worked perfectly the first day I had it...

I've since seen a few posts on the web about this flash malfunctioning on other people.

Maybe this is just a one-off, and hopefully the new one will not be a problem... I will update my review again...

Very nice flash. More powerful than the Nikon SB-910 and $220 cheaper. Good build quality. Full i-TTL support for my Nikon D7100. I'm very happy with this flash. Works great on-camera and off-camera. I use it both ways. They should have added a little pocket inside the case for the plastic foot adapter.

Comments about Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs:

This has the makings of a very good flash with one fatal and important flaw. I like the output - much higher than the SB-800 and the bounce pattern is more even and flattering. I really like the menu system - easy to learn and use with very few button pushes. The build is good and it works flawlessly as a remote with other Nikon flashes. Excellent recycle time with 3rd party battery packs. So what is the problem? On 2 very important events (good thing i had my other Nikon flashes as backups!) with only moderate flash usage, the flash stopped working because of the thermal cutoff system. The flash was not being used at full power and there is no way to turn the thermal cutoff system off, unlike in the SB-900. So the flash is useless for professional use. Nissin is coming out in October with a flash that will eliminate this problem but it may cost as much as the Nikon SB-910. Professionals looking to save some money on speedlites need to look elsewhere else.

Comments about Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs:

Maximum output is excellent. Recycle times are very respectable if not quite as fast as Nikons SB910. Build quality is fair and what I expected which is short of the SB910, but certainly good enough for most work. The downsides are: When used on a D800 in auto or TTL mode the on camera flash compensation adjustments work, but not to expectations. EG.. -3 seems to reduce output by no more than 1 stop. +1 is barely noticeable. The 2nd downside is that the Di866 MKII is not fulling compatible with my Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 units. They trigger fine, but must be run in manual mode. Something I can live with, but it is inconvienient versus using iTTL with my Nikon flash units. Over all it's a value for the money spent, you just should test it's limitations in your work flow to ensure you can live with them.

This electronic flash unit is powerful yet gentle, sort of like a good laxative.

Lots of power for a lot less than the Nikon. Seems to work perfectly with my D200 and as a wireless master or slave. Doesn't come with any accessories except the stand.

Comments about Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon DSLRs:

I bought the Di866 to augment my Nikon SB800s for multiple speedlight setups. Little did I know that I would find the Di866 is superior in many respects. The only downside is the Di866 does not support the Nikon TTL-BL mode for balance fill flash. But the other improvements completely offset this.

Build quality is excellent; at least as good as the SB800. The Di866 puts out 1 /1/3 stops more light (GN 200) than the SB800 and 1 2/3 more than the SB900. The menu is much easier to use. Batteries can be changed in seconds with a spare battery holder. The sub-flash can be used to provide a soft fill when the head is up for bounce. Re-cycle time is at least as fast as the SB800. It doesn't take two hands to swivel the head or flip up for bounce like the SB800. Color temperature is constant regardless of output.

I will buy at least two more of the units.

Got this lite to add to my ailing SB800s. Descent build, power & recycling. Can use same external power packs as SB800s. Menu is OK but small, would be better without the color stuff & bigger like nikons, etc. Metal foot & pc connector add to the quality.
