The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens from Nikon is an attractive alternative to the classic 50mm f/1.4 "normal" lens for everyday shooting with an FX or 35mm camera. The 50mm f/1.8 is nearly as "fast" as the f/1.4 and provides reduced lens flare and ghosting as well as superior color consistency through the use of Nikon's Super Integrated Lens Coating. One aspherical lens element virtually eliminates coma and spherical aberration.

Nikon's Silent Wave Motor gives you smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation, and the M/A mode lets you quickly and easily override the autofocus system for fine manual focusing. This lens is also compatible with DX cameras and when used with a DX camera, the angle of view would be equivalent to a 75mm focal length lens.

Fast f/1.8 Compact FX-Format Prime Lens
This updated classic with a fast maximum aperture is ideal for everyday shooting, perfect in low lighting situations and great for shallow depth of field control, producing images with beautiful background blur. When used on DX-format DSLRs its 35mm focal length equivalency is 75mm.
Shoot Tack-Sharp Portraits Every Time
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while an aspherical lens element virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture.
Quiet Autofocus
A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations-rather than a gear system-to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Quick Switching from AF to MF
When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring. M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.

I am a 22-year-old who loves to do photography as a hobby. I use a Nikon D3100 and have the 18-55mm and 55-200mm VR lenses. I love this camera and these lenses, but I have been looking to add a third lens to my camera bag. I wanted something with a big aperture so I could do low light shots, portraits, and street photography. I had read very good things about this lens and the price was just right for me.
This lens is extremely impressive. It seems to focus faster than other two lenses and is a small compact size. It is made of the same durable plastic, yet it feels more solid and has a nice metal mount. What I love the most is the large f/1.8 aperture! It is much bigger that the 3.5 on my other lenses. The bokeh it produces is soft, smooth, and perfect for portraits! I don't think I could be any happier with this lens. If you need a 50mm with a big aperture at an affordable price, this is the lens for you! You won't regret it.

As a pro wedding photographer, fast primes are something I use a lot.

In 50mm, I had the f/1.8 Ai-s, the f/1.8 AF (non-D), and the f/1.4G. I am getting out of the business and decided to pair down my gear in the 50mm lens area. I wasn't that excited about the 50mm f1.4G wide open, and reviews seemed to indicate the new f1.8G was comparable at f/1.8. Also the new f/1.8G had noticeably better bokeh than the older AF version. So, I decided to replace the whole lot with the new f/1.8G.

The first thing I noticed was the cheap feel of the lens and the packaging compared to my other Nikon gear. Though what I own is almost exclusively pro gear, I have had several "consumer grade" pieces over the years. Compared to every other lens I own (including Nikon 2.8 zooms, Nikon 1.x primes, a Nikon f/3.5-4.5 DX Zoom, and a Sigma EX series), this new 50mm f/1.8G is by far the cheapest feeling in the hand and in use.

In shooting test images with this lens I found a mixed bag.

Sharpness wide open is important to me. Here's the good news. Compared to my copy of the 50mm f/1.4G, this lens is comparable at f1.8 at portrait distances (it should be noted I tend to put my subjects center frame, not toward the edge). This is my primary use for this lens - low light people pics, and it will do fine. As a general use lens - smaller apertures and more varied focus distances, the sharpness award seems to go to the f/1.4G. I'm on an FX body, on a DX body it may be a tie.

At greater than portrait distances the f/1.8G wants to front focus - the lens focuses forward of the focus point. Based on my experience and what I read on various forums, front or rear focusing is a continuing problem among modern designs across brands. That and the fact I can correct for it with an adjustment on my D3 makes it a "no biggie" for me.

As you may have seen in other reviews, focus speed is average - not as fast as you may expect from a new AF-s design.

Overall I think it's a good, not great lens - 3 stars. If it felt like better quality and/or focused reliably without any adjustments on my D3, I would have given it 4 stars. If it was sharp wide open (so few lenses are), that would have been star 5.

The issue with using a prime lens is always that it might not meet the need for every situation, but this 50mm seems to cover most. And with a f/1.8 maximum aperture, provide great pictures with great clarity and great bokeh.

This lens has mega capability from portraits to weddings to landscapes to low light situations, etc. It not only provides great flexibility of purpose, but it also is great in low light situations. On top of everything else it is lightweight which makes it ideal when you are carrying your gear for long periods of time.

If all of this doesn't convince you to buy one now, this lens may be the greatest value for the buck, so why wait!!!!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

I am 59 years old, and I've always had a passion for photography. I started out with a 18-200mm lens which in my opinion took good pictures, but as time moved on I felt the need for a portrait lens. I did a lot of research, and even talked to a couple of professional photographers about what choices I had. One told me that the best portrait lens on the market in his opinion would cost me about $. He also told me that the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G was the next best thing on the market. Since I didn't have the extra cash for the $ lens, I bought this Nikkor lens. I finally got to use it the other day, and I am extremely pleased with the pictures I took with it. For the price, this is a lens that one must take a look when looking for a portrait lens. I don't think you can go wrong with this lens!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

It's a very reliable prime lens, I use a D7100 so it acts like a 75mm. It's a great portrait lens, and still a short enough focal length usable for a street photo lens on a crop sensitive DSLR.
                        It's very lightweight.
It shoots very well wide open. I have noticed photos where color fringing is very noticeable, but it's a pretty quick fix in post nowadays.

Overall, I think it is a must have for anyone. A 50mm prime lens is a must have for anyone's camera bag. This is a very cheap and good buy especially once a beginner moves on from a kit lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

My zoom lenses were not cutting it when doing portraits, so I bought this lens to do the job. This lens has a very shallow depth of field at wide apertures, rendering backgrounds nicely out of focus. Very nice bokeh. Lightweight, good build quality. A great value!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens:

I absolutely love this lens. It has not come off my D5300 since I bought it 3 weeks ago. My primary purpose for buying this lens was to take portrait pictures indoors and because it was highly recommended by my instructor as far as sharpness and quality of my images.
I like that this lens has low light capabilities and it does such an amazing job. It is important however to switch the white balance settings when moving from indoors to outdoors. The ability to adjust to a large Aperture, makes this lens to have awesome bukeh which I love to have in my images.

I have owned the 50 1.4g and the 50 1.8d, the 50 1.8g is my favorite, love it for street photography, very light, unobtrusive. If you were thinking about purchasing the 50 1.8d or the 50 1.4g the 50 1.8g gives you the best of both worlds.

Glad to have such a sharp lens that works great in low light with a Nikon D700. As always with B&H, shipping rocks.

Very sharp lens for a really great price. It is super light and short making for a great walk around lens. It has really nice bokeh at large apertures. My only complaint is that you can't really take photos at smaller apertures in anything but bright light because it doesn't have VR but that's standard for fast primes.
