The Dual Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router from Asus is a versatile, high-performance router designed to effectively work with a wide variety of wireless and wired devices on your network. This router can connect to your wireless N, B, and G devices and operates on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Operating on dual bands at the same time allows you to experience optimal data transfer speeds, so that you experience little to no lag or interference. As such, each band can transfer data concurrently at up to 300Mbps. You can surf the Internet, send emails, or download files on the 2.4GHz band and stream multimedia content, such as HD video, music, or online games on the 5GHz band.

This router also utilizes a Gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting to your modem and features four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports for establishing high-speed wired connections to any of your Ethernet-enabled devices. Beyond these ports, the router also has two USB 2.0 ports, which allow you to connect NAS storage devices or printers. With an easy-to-use interface, Asus's Ai Radar technology, and support for up to 300,000 data sessions, this router is a sure-shot way to brilliantly bring the Internet to your wired and wireless devices on your home or office network.

Dual-Band for Lag-Free Entertainment
Double your wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands that can transfer data up to speeds of 300Mbps concurrently. While basic internet applications like browsing or file downloading can occur on the 2.4GHz band, wireless HD content streaming can take place on the 5GHz band at the same time. In turn, both bands allow you to optimize the speeds at which you surf the net on the one band and stream multimedia on the other band
Gigabit Internet Surfing with Hardware NAT
Equipped with a capable hardware NAT acceleration engine and built-in Gigabit Ethernet, this router gives you full Gigabit internet performance, making its WAN to LAN throughput up to 2-5 times greater than that of traditional software-based NAT Gigabit routers
Plug-n-Surf and Hassle-Free Management
ASUS EZ UI offers you an intuitive router setup without read manuals. What's more, you can enjoy simultaneous printing and scanning by connecting an all-in-one printer to the router via the USB port. Also connect external hard disks to enjoy instant file sharing with family and friends
Ai Radar Optimized and Reliable Wireless Coverage
This unique and efficient design drastically increases wireless signal coverage and quality without increasing power consumption. It intelligently adapts beam patterns to local conditions to enable higher-gain directional signal emulation. Ai Radar shapes signals to offer the strongest possible output, transforming what may be a weak omnidirectional signal to a stronger unidirectional one, improving throughput at the same time
Powerful Online Multitasking at up to 300,000 Data Sessions
Support for a massive data pipeline of up to 300,000 data sessions means this router has around 20 times the networking capacity of other high session routers, so multiple data transfer jobs don't slow down even during heavy load
Multi-Function Twin USB Ports
With effortless connectivity to FTP, SAMBA, UPnP AV servers and DLNA standard compatible devices, sharing and networking become easier than ever. In addition, this router can continue downloading FTTP, FTP and BitTorrent files to a connected USB external storage sidk even when your PC is turned off. The twin USB ports also allow the router to connect to USB printers or file servers, so you can enjoy simultaneous wireless printing, scanning, and file sharing
Security
The router supports a variety of encryption, such as 64/128-bit WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA-Enterprise, WPA2-Enterprise, and WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). It also supports NAT and SPI firewalls

I was between this router and the Linksys E4200. I decided to go with this router because of price and throughput reviews seemed a little better. So far this router has been a much needed upgrade. I had 2 routers previously. A Linksys WRT54GSand a WRT54GS2, both had DD-WRT custom firmware and had one setup as a repeater bridge to spread the signal throughout my 3 level home. My setup was the WRT54GS2 on the middle floor as the main router with my television/Xbox entertainment center. The second router was on the first floor used as a repeater bridge for my desktop computer and second xbox. When hardwired through the router I was getting about 20-25mbps down and 3-4mbps up. Wireless about 6 feet away I was getting about 11-12mbps down and 3mbps up. The desktop was getting about 5-8mbps down and 2-3 mbps up. With the Asus RT-N56U router, my desktop at the furthest connection I now get about 15-20mbps down but only 1.6-2mbps up. My throughput and range has definitely increased, I can now download and still browse the internet. Flash videos online now load much faster. Actual router setup was not as simple as my previously owned Linksys routers which were truly plug and play. I spent about an hour trying to figure out you have to click the "globe" (internet status) on the network map to show the quick internet setup button which the instructions say to click. I have only had to soft reset the router maybe 1 or 2 times since having it for a month. Overall I am happy with this router; it gave me needed throughput I was lacking. Although you can't put DD-WRT on this router, I only needed it for a repeater bridge, but this router alone works fine. I have yet to try the network printer/storage so I can't comment on that. I would like to try the E4200 to see how they compare, but for the lower price this router is a good choice.

I bought this router based on numerous favorable reviews. Unfortunately, I had to return mine due to stability issues. Every day or two it would drop it's connection to the internet, and give me the error message "you have set the wrong dynamic or static IP address for your RT-N56U". I had no problems with my older router, however. After poking around on the ASUS support forums, it appears that this is a common issue, apparently with no resolution as of yet. I tried the obvious solutions - replaced all my cabling, checked my modem signal levels, updated to the latest firmware, etc. But to no avail. Rebooting the router fixed the problem, but it would consistently happen again in a day or two.

Other thoughts... gigabit ports are nice. And I noticed a definite wireless speed improvement over my previous router. 5GHz was fast, but the signal was not as strong as I had hoped. Web interface is easy enough to use, although I wish the MAC filtering was a little easier (you have to manually type in the MAC ids).

Some may love the futuristic styling, others may not. I found the design not very functional. It can't be wall-mounted, and takes up more desk space than other units that stand vertically.

Overall, the unit looked promising, but couldn't hold a connection for more than a day or so. Many thanks to B&H for a hassle-free, easy return process.

Comments about ASUS RT-N56U Dual-Band Wireless N600 Gigabit Router:

This product is smaller than I thought, very slim and the bracket to hold it vertically is more than adequate (I read reviews saying it was flimsy). Setup was a breeze and it performs as advertised. Nothing but accolades, would buy again.

Dual Band but range is not amazing .. good... just not amazing. Not AC router but Asus had good ratings ... I used this to totally replace FIOS Actiontec ... pretty pleased. I would be thrilled if range had increased...Replaced Home unit with a Nighthawk AC -- more costly but range is amazing with that unit .. well worth the extra price paid vs this unit.

Easy to set up, works fantastic. I researched this router closely before purchasing, because I needed a new, faster router (my old one was 7 years old). It works great at streaming my media from Plex to my Chromecast (which uses the 2.4 GHz band). I had been having problems streaming Blu-rays rips, but they work great now.

Comments about ASUS RT-N56U Dual-Band Wireless N600 Gigabit Router:

Great wireless router but be very careful when setting it up...
Not sure if it was just bad luck but my router was not working once it restarted after updating the firmware as part of the initial setup (just going through the installation wizard).
And it was not easy to get it back into a working state as the firmware restoration tool provided by ASUS was not able to connect to the router (using the instructions provided). I
managed to fix it after finding a couple of comments in forums online to use wireshark to figure out the proper ip to set up the computer to in order to connect to the router...
Long story short, the router works great now and I'm very happy with it...

I needed a newer router for my home network, because my old one could not handle the 4-5 connections we needed. This one works much better with a stronger signal and no longer drops in the bathroom!

HOWEVER - the reason I am giving it four stars is that the setup manual is garbage!!! Don't even bother reading it. Just call Asus and have them walk you through the setup process. That will save you a LOT of frustration.

Super easy to set up. Bought this because of other reviews and I'm glad I did. I had a Netgear before that I was constantly having to reboot. I'm glad I went with this one.

So far, I really like the router. The range seems much better than my old Belkin and the User Interface is smooth. It was easy to install. The only thing I'm not sure about is the Dual Band (2G and 5G). Seems like I don't have anything that can run over 5G.

My old router finally quit working, so I landed on this router to replace it. I got it because I also use other wireless devices and saw this works well in those environments. It is a dual-band, so I am beginning to think it is more than I needed though (as I don't do much movie watching, game playing on my computer), but I like it. I'm a novice in regard to this type of equipment so I don't understand everything about it yet. Installation was simple though; the look is sleek and takes up little room. As I have a second router in my network, I had to call the manufacturer for some troubleshooting. Very helpful and solved the problem for me. So, here's to more learning and enjoying better technology. (I gave 4 stars because I can't speak to the technical part of the router, but I'm happy with it - no problems)

The ASUS RT-N56U router performance is the first thing I noticed and it is exceptional for streaming services. Signal strength is very good throughout the home and I can't say enough about the improvement in speed over the G+MIMO router it replaced.
