I'm not exactly a computer geek, so I'm frequently flying by the seat of my pants when it comes to dealing with new hardware. My old laptop went kaput and I got a really good deal on a new one, but I still had a lot of data that I needed to recover from the old one, and I didn't fancy paying someone $200 or $300 to do it, especially on top of the $900 I'd just shelled out for a new laptop (bargain though it was!). This adapter seemed like the perfect solution, but only if I could get it to work. When I received it in the mail, I removed the old hard drive (easy enough, even for me), followed the directions, plugged everything together and, holding my breath, inserted the USB plug in my brand new laptop. Lo and behold! It showed up just like an external hard disk drive! Not only was I able to retrieve all my data, I even managed to erase the old hard drive, which is still perfectly useable and not at all shabby at 500 GB AND it now functions as an external hard drive! That was a benefit I hadn't even foreseen. I can use it as a backup drive, I can store a whole lotta songs and movies... , why, with a device like this, I could... dare I say it?... RULE THE WORLD! Well, the office anyway...So, score one for the DIY'ers! Oh yeah, and I was able to connect it via the USB 3 port on my new computer, so it ran like lightning!

Comments about Newer Technology USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter:
I was able to remove data from 3 of 4 old drives - it works quite well for this need. I also had an earlier version that also worked well but the connecting cables disappeared over the years - there should be some sort of bag or pouch to keep all the bits together.

I found just what I was looking for and it was delivered almost immediately. Great service as usual

This works as advertised, but the disk doesn't mount if you don't do the following:
1. Set jumper to master
2. Attach all cords (NOTE: both USB's must be plugged into computer)
3. After all cords are attached switch the power button to on.
This should get it mounted and all will be good.

Comments about Newer Technology USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter:
I was about to exchange two old system HDs and was prepared to install a new system and use Migration Assistant AFTER the new blank drives (SSDs) were installed. Only by chance I stumbled over this product which let's you write on any bare drive BEFORE installing it into your computer! This way you avoid the risk installing a possibly bad drive, the system is already on the new drive and you can even start the system from the bare drive to test it's functionality before installing the drive (which in my case was an older MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini)!Little annoyance using this adapter was that it took several attempts of plugging/unplugging until the system would recognize the new drive, but once it showed up in Disk Utility the connection and data transfer was flawless! Highly recommended for system maintenance and hardware upgrades!

Comments about Newer Technology USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter:
I've used this to read hard drives and perform data recovery. All the cable connections are solid and tight (nice thick USB cable too). Although I haven't had an opportunity to experience the USB 3.0 speed it works extremely efficient at 2.0 speeds. The box came with an IDE/PATA extension cable which was awesome because I worked on a laptop that had a broken CD/DVD drive. I was able to attach a loose CD/DVD drive from an old desktop tower and use it to boot the laptop and reinstall the operating system.

Comments about Newer Technology USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter:
It was an emergency, and I needed a quick fix. A 2.0 TB Hard drive took a tumble and was showing no signs of life. Desperate for a way to get to the precious video files inside, I searched all across B&H for a solution. There were many similar devices, but I choose the Universal Drive Adapter by Newer Technology because of the price point. I understood that there was no guarantee that even if the Adapter worked perfectly that it would solve my problem, so getting this best bang for my buck was paramount.
Thankfully once I cracked open the drive and plugged in the Universal Adapter I could hear the drive boot back to life! Moreover, I had a couple of other "dead" drives lying around that were brought back to life by the device!
For its price, the Universal Adapter is a great purchase for anyone who works a lot with multiple drives (I'm a videographer). I have only had one experience where it was unable to bring a drive back. Those who are less familiar with hard drives may have a hard time figuring out how to plug the adapter into the drive, but thankfully there are many videos online that'll show you how.
A great buy!

Used the product to transfer files from an old PC hard drive to a MacBook Pro. Once I identified the correct cords to use, set up was easy and the product worked exceptionally well. The product allowed the Mac to see all files and folders on the PC drive so that they could be easily copied over to the Mac hard drive via the USB interface.

Used the adapter to recover data from 2.5inch drive. Takes a couple of minutes to try out the right configuration for the drive being used as there are several cables and connector types. I suggest the use of a small carry bag to keep all the parts together. Perhaps something the manufacturer should consider providing.

Comments about Newer Technology USB 3.0 Universal Drive Adapter:
Tried connecting raw and data on 3.5" and 2.5" drives, and none of the drives were recognized thru the adapter on Windows 7. When you connect the adapter with the drive to the PC there isn't a device icon which pops up. I tried all permutations of cable connections, and followed the instructions.Don't have issues with other USB devices such as external hard drives. Save your money, don't buy.

Used the drive adapter to backup files from a hard drive that I had sitting around, I was able to get the files from all partitions that had an OS installed.
It came with all the cables you will need for any device.
The only thing was that the instructions were not to clear if you haven't worked with the drives and it took about two reboots for my laptop to see the hard drive but overall a great product.

[...] The item itself was what I thought it would be and could be handy for anyone using a computer. My only regret was that my harddrive had died in a poof of smoke and my info couldn't be restored, no fault of the item which is extremely easy to use.
