This is the black Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag from Tenba. Discovery doesn't begin to reveal what lies within this unique bag. From its durable water-repellent exterior to its well-padded interior dividers, this bag fills the bill for anyone who wants a bag that can "take it" while carrying quite a load. Rated to hold 1 or 2 DSLR bodies, plus 5-7 lenses, flash and accessories, the Discovery not only provides you with a safe and secure way to get from A-B, but does it both in style and functionality.

First thing you notice is that the bag opens away from your body providing you with a clear view of what's inside - but protecting the contents from stray nearby eyes. The entire exterior is water-resistant and further supported by the included rain fly that will cover the entire bag. No need to worry if you get caught in a summer's downpour. Even the bottom of the bag is water-proof because Tenba understands that, occasionally, you need to put the bag on the ground - and sometimes it's wet outside. The overlapping zipper design protects what is traditionally a weak point of all bags. The no-twist shoulder strap is contoured and contains a non-slip shoulder pad that will make walking around all day comfortable. Two decent-sized zippered cargo pockets, one on each side, can hold accessories such as a lightmeter, phone or small digital point-shoot camera. You'll notice the pockets are cut at an angle that will make accessing them even easier. In the back, the panel is air meshed for circulation and comfort.

On the inside, the Discovery contains about eight very well padded dividers that can be configured to your liking. Lens cradles will cushion your camera rig. Dual front accessory zippered pockets are designed to hold everything from batteries to cables and memory cards. You'll use these for business cards, pens, glasses, or anything you need fast access to.

One of the real "wow" features of the Discovery is the "pop-out" camera compartment that is held in a removable insert. Keep a rig in there and when you don't need it for a shoot, just open the compartment, slide it out, re-seal the bag and you're off. The Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag is supported by Tenba's five-year warranty.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Black):

I've been doing photography since carrying an old F2 and then a F3 on 2 tours in Viet Nam. I also use two 15-20 year old Tamrac's, that are almost twice as large! It seems large nowadays isn't the same as those bags from the 80's and 90's. Be that as it may, I carry one pro-DSLR in these Discovery: Large Shoulder Bags and a couple of lenses and a pro-flash. About 1/2 as much as those old Tamrac's. I bought the Tenba's cheap with shipping on a online auction site new. Great price and a really nice camera bag for traveling light! If I didn't buy it there, I would've gladly bought them from B&H. I've spent plenty with them over the years, and will continue to do so. Very honest vendor!

Love this bag, own two of them now. One for me (I own the black one) and one for my wife. We are pro wedding photographers and love these bags. I can fit my 5D Mark II w/grip, 600EX speed light, 135 f/2, 50 f1.4, and fisheye comfortably. Still have plenty of room in side and outside pockets for extras.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Sage):

I bought this bag to carry a Fuji Pro X-1 kit with four lenses. The bag is roomy enough, the end pockets are a nice touch and the zippered front pockets are useful. I found that the shoulder strap for the bag was not particularly comfortable when the bag was loaded. I used an Optech shoulder strap in its place and that was fine. It didn't look great, the bag is sage and the strap is black, but comfort was my concern. The second issue is the construction. Stitching with the front pockets started coming out within a month, I then noticed that the stitching for the lid was also fraying. While the goal of a lighter construction is great, the strength of the stitching should be more substantial. I have well worn Domke bags that are seven years old that have no signs of stitching fatigue.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Black):

This TENBA Large Shoulder Bag fills my need for a large, well padded case. It seems very well constructed, and I expect it to last for many years. I am happy to own it, and I praise it with 4 stars.

I have found some shortcomings, but I don't intend to turn anyone away from purchase, just pointing out some things I didn't have the chance to consider before buying.

                      - One of the features that drew me to this bag was the top lid that opened outward. My last 2 bags opened toward my body, and were always blocking my view of the contents. As it turns out, this lid does certainly open away, but doesn't have enough of a hinge to let it flop over the side of the bag. The result is that the lid must be held open with one hand, or else it falls back down, covering the gear. Not much improvement over the other design.

                      - As usual, the inner compartments of the main body are separated by padded dividers with hook-and-loop material to hold them in place. This 'should' allow the user to move the dividers around to their liking, but unfortunately, the soft 'loop' material doesn't extend around the entire interior, so the dividers can only be moved in a small amount away from their original positions, or just completely removed. I know I could fit 2 more plastic primes in there, but the dividers don't cooperate.

                      - The 2 zippered pouches on either end are very handy, except just a bit too small to fit my backup DSLR with battery grip attached (the camera fits fine without the grip or lens).

                      - Last, the larger front outer compartment (against the main body) has several storage nooks inside. Most are useful, but not the two that are sewn against the main body. They are both so tight, I can hardly fit a piece of paper or credit card inside. I fear anything I put in would be irretrievable, especially if I were in a hurry to dig it out. I would be interested to find out what the designers had in mind with these, but I'll never know, because the instruction card has no detail about it.

To summarize, I feel this is an 80% solution to my needs; The quality is excellent, most of the features are well thought out, and the cost is very fair. I wish it was 100%, but none of the other choices seem closer, so I'm happy to have found it here at B&H.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Black):

I'm a working professional, frequent traveler. This bag works great for me - enough capacity for large DSLR, 3 lenses, flash and accessories. The bag is very light but tough. Big enough without being bulky. Easy to carry on airplanes. Pad on shoulder strap is comfy. Rain cover is a nice addition. Main compartment flap opens away from you, making it easy to work out of while wearing it. Excellent protection for your gear.

I still have my first Tenba bag I bought in 1979, and it is as good as the day I bought it. I highly recommend their products.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Black):

Too often I have received products that have not been quite as the Mfg. advertised. Not so with this bag. It is very light, weighing 1.98 lbs including the dividers I need for my equipment. The measurements match the Mfg. specs, the shoulder strap does not slip off the shoulder and can be lengthened quite a bit for carrying it accross your body, the bag opens away from you for quick access and padding is adequate. The true test is whether or not it proves to be durable, but I'll just have to wait and see.

Comments about Discovery: Large Shoulder Bag (Sage):

Five stars so far. We'll see how it wears. I have had it out a couple of times. I have had a Tenba bag for over twenty years. Despite hard use it is still totally intact. I have been unable to wear it out. This is why I bought a Tenba replacement. The padding works extremely well aganst my hip. The pockets hold my lenses and body much more firmly than any bag I ever used. That's great to preserve finish on gear. The bag carries very well. The bag opens so I can see into it while carrying. The bag is light and the material is superior also to any bag I have had. It is pliable and conforms to the shape of lens etc. The bag holds a surprising amount of equipment. Right now as it sits it has a 5D, 24-105, 100-400, 17-40, extenders, and an 85-1.8 plus the usual junk I carry. I could still get another lens in it. I like the plain color. It does not look like the usual black camera bag. I worry about the life of the zippers and the pull cords. So far so good.
