Panasonic boasts that their DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera is even better than the company's G2. With an enhanced 16Mp sensor, a Free Angle touch LCD, improved access thanks to the mode dial, and other numerous enhancements, it would appear they're right. One way in which the G3 didn't change is that it still provides the user with the versatile Micro Four Thirds lens mount for attaching any number of Four Thirds lenses, and then some. That means the photographer will have all the advantages of a large DSLR camera, in a compact body. There's no compromise when traveling - both the ability to move quickly with light weight gear and to take creative images are available when shooting with a Micro Four Thirds camera.

Of course, the G3 also shoots 1080i HD video! What digital camera worth its salt doesn't these days? Knowing that HD DSLR video is the wave of the future and a driving force behind the Micro Four Thirds movement, Panasonic was sure to include 1920 x 1080/60i capture. Features like a built-in stereo microphone and a live viewfinder help the user to capture impressive movies. Using the aforementioned HDMI connection, those same movies can be outputted to an HDTV for immediate viewing on the big screen.

Whether the shooter is capturing stills or video, the lens options for the G3 are impressive. The Micro Four Thirds mount allows for 11 lens options from the Lumix G MFT System. There's even a 3D lens available for capturing 3-dimensional and 2D images simultaneously. In addition, lens adapters are available for mounting Leica M and Leica R lenses and older Lumix full Four Thirds lenses. In addition, many Lumix MFT lenses feature optical image stabilization, which helps to prevent blur or un-wanted motion.

The DMC-G3's 3.0" free angle touchscreen LCD helps the shooter to capture from numerous angles, and to replay video and stills with ease - whether it's an audience of one, or the entire family is gathered around. The touch controls on the LCD allow for navigating the menu, focusing, and playback, along with triggering the shutter. Other noteworthy features include the camera's mode dial and hot shoe. The mode dial enables fast access to common camera modes like Aperture Priority and Manual, and it also provides access to additional settings, including two custom modes, scene modes, and the Creative Control Mode. In addition, there's also a dedicated video button that can activate video capture without requiring that the camera modes change. Additionally, the hot shoe allows for attachment of external flashes.

In addition to being a lightweight, user-friendly Compact Camera System, the G3 also provides the shooter with uncomplicated storage options. The internal memory card slot is compatible with SD/SDHC and SDXC memory cards. Of course, like most digital cameras today, files can also be off-loaded via the camera's USB interface. Other camera connections worth mentioning here include the mini HDMI, an A/V output, and the 2.5mm min jack. The 2.5mm jack allows for connection of an optional remote for hands-free control of the camera.

The Micro Four Thirds Advantage
Panasonic's Lumix DMC-G3 offers the benefits of a DSLR interchangeable lens system camera with a point-and-shoot camera's compactness and simplicity. This reduction in size and weight is thanks to advancements in mirror-free viewfinder technology, and large DSLR format sensors that are more compatible with a new class of compact Micro Four Thirds (MFT) System lenses. This new class of Compact System Cameras (CSC) offers a weight and compactness not seen in traditional DSLRs, for greater portability and creative control. The DMC-G3 image resolution has been upgraded to 16.0 Megapixels from it's predecessor the DMC-G2
Mode Dial and Hot Shoe
The DMC-G3 provides a traditional DSLR-like experience with an external mode dial for quick access to common modes like Program, Shutter, Aperture Priority, and Manual. Additional dial settings include two custom modes, scene modes and the new Creative Control Mode. The DMC-G3 provides a dedicated video button that can be used to switch to video capture quickly without changing modes. Like most DSLRs, the DMC-G3 provides a built-in flash and hot shoe for connecting optional Lumix flashes

Available scene modes: Portrait, Soft Skin, Scenery, Architecture, Sports, Peripheral Defocus, Flower, Food, Objects, Night Portrait, Night Scenery, Illuminations, Baby, Pet, Party, and Sunset, which can all be controlled from the intuitive touch-enabled LCD

Lens Options and 3D Capture
Lumix G Series Compact System Cameras utilize the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) System mount. MFT offers greater size and weight reduction in the lens without compromising lens performance and clarity. The Lumix G MFT System offers a selection of 11 high performance fixed focal length and variable aperture G Vario zooms, including a highly versatile 3D lens capable of capturing both 2D and 3D images at the same time. There are lens adaptors available for mounting older Leica M and Leica R lenses, including older Lumix full Four Thirds lenses. An innovative 14-140mm HD G Vario lens provides the best of video and still-image shooting with a long 10x range and near silent high-speed focusing. When connected to the DMC-G3, ultra fast focusing and auto subject track AF can be achieved

Many Lumix MFT lenses come with MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) built-in. This feature helps prevent blurring from hand-shake. Working together with the cameras intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motions blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves, you're sure to capture images that are sharp

Dust Reduction System
As with many interchangeable lens cameras, dust on the sensor reduces image clarity. To eliminate this problem, the DMC-G3 uses a Dust Reduction System that uses a supersonic wave filter in front of the Live MOS sensor. Vibrating vertically, around 50,000 time per second, the filter repels dust and other particles effectively
Touch-Enabled LCD Screen
At the heart of the DMC-G3s improved functionality is a movable 3.0" LCD (460k dot) that allows for intuitive touch control of menus and most shooting, focusing, playback and effects controls. Menus can be customized using simple drag-and-drop actions like those on most touch-enabled cell phones. This allows for a custom user interface, giving Quick Menu access to functions that can be tailored to any user's expertise level. Even the shutter can be triggered from the touch-enabled LCD by simply touching the subject you want focused and captured. Using the touch-screen operation, a user can lock onto a subject, enabling AF Tracking in both still and video modes. When you're ready to shoot, the subject will be in focus and ready to capture
Live Viewfinder
For many, a traditional eyelevel viewfinder is still a must have. The DMC-G3 meets this demand with an eye-level electronic viewfinder that projects a high resolution 1.44m-dot image with 100% field of view (800 x 600, 0.7x magnification). Color breakup has been improved vs. the DMC-G2, resulting in smooth image viewing while panning
HD Video Capture
The Lumix DMC-G3 also shoots 1080/60i high definition video using the AVCHD format (sensor output 30p). It offers a built-in stereo microphone and is available with Dolby Digital Stereo Creator. Advanced video sound controls include a wind-cut function that further enhances the sound as it helps reduce noise caused by background wind, and an L/R audio meter display for controlling audio levels. Captured video can be played back in High Definition via an optional HDMI mini cable directly to an HD-compatible TV, or easily played directly on Panasonic VIERA TV via the SD card. New near silent focusing features offered in several Lumix Micro Four Thirds lenses helps keep lens noise at bay while the touch-enabled LCD allows you to automatically keep active subjects in focus with touch-enabled subject AF Tracking
Faster, Accurate Pinpoint Focusing
Contrast Detection Auto Focus technology used in point-and-shoot and new mirrorless Compact System Cameras now approaches the speeds that were once only available from traditional professional-level DSLRs. The DMC-G3 now offers Light Speed Auto Focus (14-140mm ~0.1 sec. 14-42mm ~0.18 sec., 45-200mm ~0.15 sec.). Lumix Light Speed AF locks onto a subject quickly so you won't suffer from "shutter lag" frustration. Contrast Auto Focusing also offers greater shot accuracy due to fewer hardware components needed vs. traditional DSLR phase difference systems, thus fewer pictures will suffer from system focusing errors. (e.g. the accuracy of Contrast AF is approx. 90% while Phase Difference AF is approx. 60% at F1.4)

Manual control over focus is available in the DMC-G3 and has been greatly improved over DMC-G2. When magnification is first enabled at 4x by simply touching the subject, that subject is enlarged in a small window allowing you to keep the rest of the image in view as a framing reference. Beyond 4x, that small window fills the monitor so even more control over focus fine-tuning can be achieved. This handy feature is available from both the MF Assist (Manual Focus) and AF + MF focus modes

MF Assist
The DMC-G3 now offers a larger LCD touch focus area than the DMC-G2. Now touch focus can be enabled from any part of the image as seen on the LCD. Unlike traditional DSLRs that limit the number and position of focus points, the DMC-G3 uses the entire image sensor and can even fine-tune focus with a new fine-tuning Pinpoint AF feature. When Pinpoint AF is enabled, the image is enlarged, allowing for pixel-level setting of the focus area desired. Once set, the DMC-G3 will use this fine-tuned focus point to produce a sharp, detailed image
More Burst Shooting Options
Rapid burst control at various rates and resolutions. Capture full-resolution 16-megapixel images at up to 4 frames per second with mechanical shutter enabled, or an even faster 20 frames per second using the electronic shutter feature at a reduced resolution of 4- megapixels
Intelligent Auto and Intelligent Auto Plus (iA, iA+)
The DMC-G3 has advanced functions that will satisfy experienced photographers, yet is easy enough for beginners to use comfortably in both photo and video recording modes with iA (Intelligent Auto) Plus. In the new iA Plus mode, the defocusing area, exposure control, and white balance can be adjusted for scenes where a slight manual adjustment may produce a more desired result
Color and Effects
Using the new Photo Style Mode, popular color effects can be achieved. These settings can be further enhanced with fine-tuning of Contrast, Sharpness, Saturation and Noise Reduction. Color effects include: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait and Custom

With the new Creative Control Mode, accessed from the Mode dial at the top of the camera, an expressive look to the image can be achieved without the need for complicated post-processing software. Common effects can be achieved via the touch-control menu as a pre-setting in an easy-to-understand "what you see is what you get" experience. Effects include: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, and High Dynamic

Venus Engine FHD
The new Venus Engine FHD offers vastly improved compensation for electronic noise under low light and shadows where higher ISOs typically add grain to the image. Circuitry on the new 16-megapixel sensor further reduces low-noise signal problems at the pixel level and at the amplifier circuit level. As a result, higher ISOs with much lower noise can be achieved. This means faster action-stopping shutter speeds in low light, and a maximum achievable ISO of 6400

The noise level of the DMC-G3 offer significant reductions in electronic noise vs. prior models. Noise is significantly suppressed by more than 66%. Notably in shooting at high ISO setting, S/N value is improved by approximately 200% compared with the conventional 12.1-megapixel sensor. The sensor performance improves by 6dB at ISO 3200 and max. 9dB at ISO 6400

The new Venus Engine FHD uses new Intelligent Resolution technology to sharpen edge detail without softening fine details. In addition to maximizing edge and fine detail, the Venus Engine offers Intelligent D-Range Control. Intelligent D-Range Control enables maximum capture of the images full range of brightness, without blown-out highlights and mudding shadows

I bought my first Lumix DMC-G3 camera and three lenses for my Christmas present in December 2011. I love the camera. The camera and the lenses take great photographs and they weigh only about 1/2 or 1/3 the weight of the Canon 7D and heavy lenses I previously carried around. The only thing negative about the camera is that because the body is so small, the controls are very close together and for the first couple of months I was accidently touching controls while holding the camera. But I have gotten used to it and now seldom accidentally touch controls. I have had some very good low light results with the camera. I highly recommend this camera.

I use this camera as a back up body for my personal work. This is the best price I have seen on a camera of this quality. I previously owned a Panasonic GH2 whis is supposedly the best (at the time) in the Panasonic line. I hated that camera as it was overly complicated and would change settings every time a person picked up the camera and accidentaly touched any of the buttons on the back. The G3 does not do this and is not as complicated to use while having all the image quality of its big brother. The 4/3rds system is a remarkable alternative to the SLR especially when traveling. Yhe lenses are smaller, it is easier to cary, the image wuality is very good and I don't feel like a pack horse when I am traveling.

I love this camera! I am coming from a point and shoot so to me the quality is fantastic. Focus is over twice as fast as my high quality fuji point and shoot. The price on this model has really come down and if you are looking to go from a point and shoot to dslr style with the ability to change lenses then I highly recommend this camera. because it is a mirrorless camera the battery life is a little short. I usually get between 200 and three hundred pics to a charge. I just went on [@] and bought a $5 battery and it works just as good as the manufactured one.

I use it in fieldwork on a plant inventory, tracking an endangered population of Arizona willow, and surveying the dying trees due to climate change. I needed a camera that can be simple to use, but that I can customize to shoot unusual conditions. Excellent. The manual is better that that of the G1 I bought in 2009 (I wanted better color and low light performance). The G3 is better in several ways.

There are many powerful and useful features crammed into this product. The speed of the auto focus was impressive. I would recommend it to someone on a tight budget looking for a fast focusing camera and nice picture quality. Would not recommend it to someone looking for manual video use.

I really like the size/weight of the camera (as far as I know, it is the smallest micro four thirds camera with built-in viewfinder) and the price was great. The picture quality and features are also rather good - comparable to most entry level DSLRs.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I have owned everything from high-end point and shoots (Sony HX30V) to pro-sumer Nikon and Canon DSLRs. While I was hesitant to migrate toward the M43 products, the pricing on this model really made it easy. The controls are intuitive, the feature-set adequate, and the quality of the photos/videos more than you should expect for a $ kit. The only downside to this camera is that there really isn't a moderately priced "fast" prime or wide-angle option if you want additional lenses. Other than that it is a great buy.FYI - I have also been using it with old legacy glass from the 60's & 70's. The adapters are cheap and the results are astoundingly good. It's as easy as attaching the lens, setting it to aperture priority, and then have at it. The zoom feature to ensure good focus works wonderfully, both on the back screen and the electronic viewfinder. So, if you buy this camera made sure to pick up some old "nifty fifties" from your friends closet, buy the adapter, and go have some fun.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I have welcomed myself to the mirrorless ILC world with this Panasonic DMC-G3. I'm very impressed. I own two other D-SLR cameras (Canon), but I've been putting them aside for this little wonder. But I stress little - if you have large hands (which I actually do), take a look at some other body (like the new Canon SL1 or something).

However, this camera does everything the DSLR does. One drawback is the noticeably slower autofocus. So this is not a sports photography camera. I would also leave it out of low-lit places (this is where fast lenses from DSLR cameras shine the best). When it comes to everyday and special events in well-lit/outdoor settings, this is my go-to camera. Add to it high-quality video (I've heard the GH2 and GH3 are major players in that regard), and it's extremely well worth it.

Now there is a G5 available, so that's the latest. But if you can get this camera at a price you like, definitely suggest the purchase.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I once used a GH1 and this time, I bought a G3 from B&H, therefore, my judgement are based upon the G3 performance compared with GH1 and DSRL cameras.

It is well built, with built in EVF and flash, these two items are useful especially while you shoot in daylight.

The picture quality is so good, even if you only shoot at JPEG straight out and untouched, the photo will not be recognized by others it is shot by such a small body.

The touch screen is very useful and high ISO capability is okay, I mean could use it shoot at ISO1600 without issues. Moreover, you also could amount Nikkor, EF, Sony lenses onto it via adaptors.

One cons are: 1) The battery life is too short. You must buy one more for 5 to 6 hours continuously play. 2) Shutter sounds quite loud. 3) Shutter delay, but this is a common issue to all EVF bodies.

I purchased this camera because I had already invested in the micro 4/3 camera system. I found the G3 to be easy to use and it has more features than my other micro 4/3 cameras and my Canon 50D. The photos I have taken have been great and comparable to my 50D. I just wish the Image Stability feature was in the body like my Olympus Micro 4/3s. Other than that a great camera. It even has the EVF which is great in the sun. The price could not be matched by any of the other photo shops I buy from.

I purchased this camera as a carry anywhere machine. I love the onscreen histogram. I've primarily been shooting with it in aperture preferred mode. The rear control dial serves a double purpose of controlling aperture and adjusting exposure compensation. The exposure lag is a bit longer than I would have anticipated from a 2010 era camera but isn't anything I can't live with. The articulated LCD rear screen is a joy to work with especially at low angles. I use the eye level viewfinder for all other shooting scenarios. Some people may find the lack of an auto sensor to switch back and forth from eye level to LCD a minus but I'm not bothered by having to push a button to switch. At B&H's current price (Spring 2013) this camera is a real bargain. Be sure to purchase extra batteries. This camera has a low capacity battery (less than 300 shots per charge).

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I bought this for use as a travel camera. It is smaller than my G2, or EPL-1. The auto-focus is also noticeable faster than either of those. The 16mp sensor produces notably better images than the 12mp sensors. I am more satisfied with ISO 1600, and even 3200 performance than either the G2 or EPL-1. Above ISO 3200, and the image quality definitely suffers. The video mode is excellent, and should allow the camera to make a good stand in camcorder on trips. It has a limited amount of buttons to access settings on the camera. As a result it is necessary to use the touchscreen to adjust settings on screen. The touchscreen itself isn't bad, although certainly not as responsive as a good smartphone screen. The menu system itself is ok, but looks dated. Like the G2 it lacks in body stabilization, and relies on stabilized lenses instead. I think it's a plus when using long tele-zoom lenses, and a drawback with non-stabilized primes. All in all this is first micro 4/3 camera I can say I am really happy with. While it doesn't have the direct controls that the G2 has, it is faster, and delivers noticeably better images. This camera, two kit zoom lenses, three primes, a flash, and a macro adapter all fit in a camera that previously held a Canon 7D with a short zoom. When you factor in the very reasonable price this camera is now selling for, it was too good to pass up.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I bought 2 of these as a compact solution when I don't want to carry my 5DII. They are nice cameras for that purpose, but obviously the image quality is not as good as the full frame camera. The autofocus is very fast and accurate with the quality prime lenses from Panasonic and Olympus. The video is nice, but there are no manual controls or microphone jack. I think it is the best compromise in size while still retaining adequate image quality.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

I purchase this as it was w/in my budget and I wanted to be able to use it w/ my other lens that I own. Using an adapter...Voila! I use this mainly for my work/play. I love it! It would have been nice to be able to have full control of the manual settings. I have it on that mode always. My next purchase will definitely be the GH2 or GH3 because of it's ability to have full manual control. Hopeing B&H will have the best price!! Overall, I am happy :)

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera (Body):

This camera may be at the end of its production life, nevertheless it is still great.
It can be bought at significant discount. It replaces my bigger full frame Nikon kit when I am traveling or hiking. The 20 mm pancake lens almost lives on this body.
It is very compact and rugged. The electronic viewfinder takes getting used to, and it is not possible to move the focus points when looking through the viewfinder.

Still, it can do most things a DSLR can do and produce sharp, well saturated images. Shooting above ISO 800 will produce unacceptable noise, but this is a feature common to the micro 4/3 format.
