  • Reduced Ghost and Flare for Clear Photos
  • Circular Aperture Diaphragm
  • Durable Metal Mount

Panasonic's Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens is designed for use with Lumix G Micro 4/3 cameras. It provides an angle of view similar to a 50mm lens on a 35mm or full-frame digital camera, and the wide f/1.4 maximum aperture can deliver beautiful, bright photos and videos with softly out-of-focus backgrounds. Built to Leica's usual high standards, this lens delivers excellent image quality with minimal distortion or chromatic aberrations, with a sturdy metal mount.

Nano Surface Coating minimizes reflection over the entire visual light range, resulting in sharp, clear images with very little ghost and flare. The use of the Ultra High Refractive index lens and glass mold aspherical elements helps the lens maintain superb uniformity edge to edge. Seven aperture blades form a circular aperture for very pleasing out-of-focus areas in your images.

F1.4 brightness allowing a beautiful soft focus for photos and videos to be even more impressive
A superb image quality with minimum distortion, chromatic aberrations that pass a stringent Leica standard
The UHR (Ultra High Refractive) index lens and glass mold aspherical lenses for achieving uniformed description from the center to the edges
Panasonic's Nano Surface Coating technology minimizes reflection at the entire visual light range (380nm-780nm) by applying the extra-low refractive index coating with nano-sized structure on the surface of the lens. It results in super clear pictures with dramatic reduction of ghost and flare.

This is my second Pan/Leica 25mm Sumilux f1.4 lens--my first one was the "D" variant for standard 4/3 cameras. I loved my first one and feel almost the same about this one. I bought the DG before my Olympus OM-D arrived, as I literally NEED a very fast standard focal length lens.

This is the lens which I keep on my camera almost all of the time. Its outstanding maximum aperture allows me to shoot indoors without a flash or use an extrodinarily high ISO setting, and I can even do street shooting in the middle of the night and get impressive results. The f1.4 aperture also provides a nice bokeh effect, which can be difficult to achieve with M4/3 lenses with slower lenses.

Unlike the standard 4/3 version of this lens, there is a bit of barrel distortion--more than one would expect from a standard focal length prime designed in-part by Leica. Fortunately, that is corrected in most, if not all, M4/3 cameras by JPEG software; if you shoot RAW, you have to run your images through additional lens correction software/plug-ins to eliminate this distortion.

It also differs from the standard 4/3 version in size, heft, and materials. The "D" Summilux is really large and heavy for a standard focal length prime, even when mated to a good sized SLR body. Its solid Leica-like construction is obviously a big contributor to the lens' mass. THIS ALL CHANGES WITH THE DG LENS. The M4/3 lens is much smaller and lighter than the 4/3 version. Its weight is in perfect ballance on the OM-D (although it might make something like a PEN feel too front-heavy), and the size is just right for making a quick grab to manually focus it. While it might have been nice for this lens to feel more solid, with more metal in its construction, the plastic used is more than strong enough and provides plenty of feel--given the advatage in being much lighter and better suited to M4/3 camera bodies, this trade-off was a no-brainer. I had actually thought about using my Summilux D lens with an adaptor ring on my OM-D body, but the ergonomics of that combination just didn't work out.

The lens is also known for making a soft clicking noise. To my knowledge, this occurs with some cameras as the aperture is quckly moving open and closed whenplaced in an automatic setting. I typically shoot in an aperture priority mode, and as such, have not yet heard this clicking noise on the OM-D.

I should also note that this lens auto-focusses lightning-fast on the OM-D; probably about as fast as the 12-50mm Zuiko which came with the camera, although that's just my seat-of-the-pants appraisal.

All in all, I can't think of a better lens to have on my camera to shoot with in almost any situation, outside of where I need a very long or very wide focal length for a specific reason. The lens might not be cheap for a standard prime, but the quality of my images is crucial to me so I think of it as money very well spent.

I really want to like this lens more, because the optical quality is great, but the AF at < f2.8 is so painfully slow on my EP3 that I desperately want a switch to allow manual focus. I have resigned myself to the reality that it is often faster to switch back to my manual Hexanon glass, focus, take the image, then switch back to this one than it is to wait for AF at the wide open apertures. This lens is also really loud. It is loud enough that it causes me worry that it is malfunctioning, and often causes my subjects to have a strange worried expression on their faces. The instructions state the noise level is normal, however. Sometimes, frankly, I wonder if the lens was worth it; I don't do much of the deep DoF work where this lens seems best-suited.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

My primary weapon is my E-M1 with grip loaded with either the 12-40 F2.8 or my new behemoth 40-150 F2.8. But I also carry an E-M5 loaded with a prime lens for targets of opportunity at weddings and indoor events. For all things indoor natural light, this lens is my goto glass. The zoomies just can't touch the performance of a quality fast prime in these situations. I avoid flash in these situations every way I can so I can capture the ambience of the environment. I'm an unrepentant gear junkie, and so the idea of 'if I only had one lens' is alien to me. If I only had ten lenses is more my style. But hypothetically, if I only had one lens then I must reluctantly confess this would be the one.

Perfect match to my Olympus E M5. Fast, accurate focus in high and low light. Clean, lovely images at all apertures. The Olympus lens stabilisation and the low light performance of the Summilux are a fantasy to this old shooter who grew up pushing Tri-X and shooting the Leica at 1/15. I'm confident getting detailed shots at 1/4, possibly lower. It is quiet, solid and, to these old hands, weighs nothing. What's not to love ?

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

After purchased both LEICA 15mm and 42.5mm I thought I did complete the collection by getting a 25mm. My first impression was "where is the aperture ring?" I then realized that this lens has an older design so it doesn't have one. My unscientific tests show the image quality isn't as sharp as the other two lens at wild open and the color shifts from warm to cold from wild to narrow. It also focus slower than the other two lenses, a lot mis-focus compare to 15 and 42.5mm at low light low contrast situation. Overall the bokeh is generally good given it is a F1.4 but still it is a m43 lens therefore you will have to work hard to achieve any meaningful bokeh (meaning really close to the subject and have the background really far away). In conclusion I think this lens is fair but can be made better knowing how well the other two siblings performed.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

I purchased this lens when I purchased a GH4 (see "The Mighty Mirrorless" review). I am glad to say that this is a great companion for the M4/3s GH4.

From the photography side, this lens is very fast and very sharp. I have had several photographer friend that have made several positive comments on the speed and sharpness that this lens produces. Some of the comments even came from some FX camera shooters. Burst mode of this lens on the GH4 is insanely fast. I have only test the high .jpg setting in burst mode so I'm not sure if the large RAW will slow it down significantly or not. Portraits photos from this lens are awesome as well (see GH4 review for sample pic with this lens). The bokeh has a very smooth finish to it at the f1.4 and I have found that it is consistent throughout the stops.

The video performance is almost photo quality, very sharp and the bokeh is still has the smoothness to it. I have used this lens on some stabilizing rigs and the footage is very usable even though it does not have O.I.S. built in. The focus ring is very smooth and has a good amount of surface area to adjust focus with while following a subject when shooting video. The focus bump is not overly obvious, subtle and smooth as well.

I use this lens mainly for shooting interviews in combination with the GH4 but I have used it for stills on several occasion as well. If you are looking for a very fast M4/3s lens then I would not hesitate to get this lens. I highly recommend it!

I got exactly what I wanted out of this lens. I wanted a crisp interview subject in sharp focus in the foreground and an out-of-focus interior shot of the building in the background. This lens delivered with lots of light. I did also get plenty of DoF when I wanted it for shooting exteriors of the same building. Pretty good performance for a little lens that didn't break the bank.I shoot in mixed AF/Manual so the AF speed issue isn't as much a factor for me. I didn't hear the lens on the video I shot and I didn't have a problem quickly focusing on moving targets. Seems pretty sturdy to me.

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

I bought this based on the reviews, and wanted a 50mm equivalent for my GH4. This lens has not disappointed. The focus ring is super smooth and the image quality is superb. Highly recommended.

LEns was much sharper than the other M43 lenses I have used for my GH3... really ups the quality with depth of field and color balance and definitely low light capability... without this lens, my camera was only half as good

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

This prime is a must for any four thirds user. The sharpness is sublime, but the depth of filed takes me back to my OM-1 days with my F1.4 lens. Absolutely beautiful. Forget about zoom, just work a bit harder to get that right composition and be amazed. I have coupled this lens with my new OM-E1 and the combo is stellar.
The lens does not feature any measure scale, which distracts a bit from its outer beauty. Otherwise fast focus, sharp and a must!
One oddity though was that this lens became 20% more expensive two days after I bought it. Not sure if I would have bought it at current price compared to the OM prime at almost half.

                          Good Lens For The Money

Comments about Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f/1.4 ASPH Micro 4/3 Lens:

I agonized over the decision on which 50mm equivalent lens I wanted for some time. In an ideal world I would have gotten the 0.95 Voigtlander which is a phenomenal MFT mount lens. However, my budget wouldn't allow it and I opted for the Panasonic lens at 1.4. The low light performance and image quality are very solid for this price point. The build quality isn't going to win any awards, but it's decent construction which is also fairly lightweight (I am not rough on lenses). Overall, if your looking for a decent prime with a decent price you can't go wrong with this lens.

As far as I'm concerned Leica with its' history of lens making, offers a great addition to any camera that has an interchangeable lens system.Clear, sharp, and accurate color are what I expect from the Leica brand.
