If you're like me you're very unlikely to buy a lens this inexpensive; after all, the Nikon version costs about $1.8K while this is [$] we've all learned you "don't get something for nothing," well [$] is not nothing but compared to $1,800 is close. This lens is one of the rare exceptions in life and a definite bargain. When I opened the box I wasn't sure what to expect, but as soon as I felt it and rotated the focus ring I was instantly excited. My first test shots were at 1.4 in room light of my Boxer and what I saw in the file was detail and sharpness I rarely see with my fast Nikon primes wide open. I decided to buy the Rokinon 35mm f/1.4 lens. On D3 bodies focus is a breeze given the viewfinder's focus indicator. Thrilled with the purchase.

Knowing what I have been looking through reviews now when I bought this lens I may say that this is fairly good lens. For anyone who did not use this type of 1.4 lens previously, will need a period of adaptation.I Must say that it is very hard to focus although it has a chip and AF focus confirmation,I find my self using the eye on the subject method working best for me. Soft at 1.4 much much better at 1.8 and much easier to focus. Using it with moving subject is useless , but the bokeh for still portraits is so so smooth. Personaly I think that Nikkor 1.8 is better choice as you will not loose frames due to lack of AF on Rokinon.
Summary: With a bit more sharpenning you will get some great results

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

85mm f/1.4. There's something magical about the way an 85mm lens looks anyway, but you pair that with a razor-thin depth-of-field, you have an out-of-this-world lens for portraits, general photography and videography.

Yesterday I was taking some pictures of my nieces at my grandmother's house, it was fairly dark because outside it was rainy and just generally "blah". My youngest niece walked out of the kitchen and into a room that only had light from a window outside, but it was an extremely beautiful, soft light, while the light from the previous room gave a very golden glow to her hair. The first thought that went through my mind was "will there be enough light without turning on a light and ruining the moment?" I rotated the aperture ring down to 1.4, bent down and snapped a picture. I peeked at the settings on the picture and it said ISO 10000. Shockingly enough, not only did it work, but it created a really beautiful photograph with the contrast of the two light colors. My dad thought the light was too dim, so he reached over and turned on a light afterward (which was fine, because with any other lens I own, it would have been far too dark to photograph). That picture turned out to be my favorite one of the day, even with the high ISO, slightly blown-out background and poor lighting. I will post an image below. It's not technically the best photograph, I mean the background is a bit busy, but the mixture of the two types of light and the look on my niece's face really created a neat image.

But this little lens, with its little price tag, is worth every penny. The bokeh is BEAUTIFUL, the ability to shoot in low light is a must-have and the 85mm focal length, as I said earlier, is magical. I've used this on a D800 and D7100, it works wonderfully on both, but I prefer it on the D800. The focal length seems a bit long on the D7100, at about 135mm, but that's also a decent focal length for portraits if you have a large studio or you're outside, but it's a bit long for indoor portraiture/videography.

The lens is a little soft at f/1.4, but not horribly so, it still produces lovely images with fantastic background blur. The DoF is razor-thin though, which is to be expected. If you stop down to f/2.8, the lens is as sharp as just about any other lens I own, save my macro lenses.

The focus ring feels AMAZING. It's perfectly damped, has the perfect amount of rotation to allow you to get perfect focus, it's wide and just feels really nice to turn. I've found myself rotating the focus ring between shoots because it just feels so darn good to move back and forth. No other lens that I have feels this way and I've got everything from fully-manual 50 year old lenses to the venerable 70-200mm f/2.8 from Nikon. None of them give me that same feeling. It makes you want to shoot with this lens, as strange as that sounds.

There are precisely two things that irk me, though. The first is the ultra-flimsy lens hood, which really isn't that big of a problem, as you can probably buy a different one, or just not use it at all. The second is the ability to focus closely...it can't. The closest you can focus is about 4 feet. If it weren't for that, this lens would have been very close to perfect. You're probably thinking "4 feet, that's pretty close!" No, it's not, not for an 85mm lens. There have been quite a few times when I've run up against the minimum focusing distance and it's kept me from getting the shot I want. That rarely happens to me. With all my other lenses, they focus acceptably close given the focal length, but this one...it NEEDS to focus closer. I don't expect a macro lens, but this just seems like way too far away for the focal length, in my opinion. This is a problem which is so serious that it forces me to take one star away.

I haven't had any issues with focus, even at f/1.4. It's plenty sharp enough that I can see what's in focus and what isn't. If there's a situation where I'm having trouble, I know I can look at the little focus confirmation circle in my viewfinder to tell me when I'm in focus and it's been perfect every time I've used it.

The build quality is amazing, outside of that flimsy lens hood, but I guess they had to cut costs somewhere and I'm glad it was on something that really doesn't matter. The lens is sturdy, made of metal and hard plastic and feels solid as a tank. When you look through the lens without it attached to your camera for the first time, you will say "wow", because there's just so much glass and there's so much light coming through that glass. It's a stunningly beautiful little lens.

The setup was very easy on both of my cameras, I programmed this lens in as a non-cpu lens and it works great. The programming method is very intuitive and allows you to have the focal length and aperture in your metadata, as well as having the correct aperture listed on the top LCD screen of your camera. The one hiccup that I've seen here is that when you're at f/2.4, the camera says f/2.8 (it actually says f/2.8 for both stops, for whatever reason). However, this doesn't mess with metering and I've gotten fantastic photos at both f/2.4 and f/2.8 without issue.

If you want a beautiful portrait or general lens, with a fast aperture and something that is an absolute joy to use (outside of the close-focusing issue), AND you don't really have the money for the Nikon f/1.4, this is THE perfect lens for you. Or if you just like the feel of a manual lens over the plasticky newer lenses, this is the lens for you. I don't have the Nikon f/1.4 to test vs the Rokinon, but I suspect that you're not going to gain much, if any, sharpness by buying the Nikon. The Rokinon is actually shockingly sharp when stopped down, I wouldn't have expected that kind of performance with a lens for this little money. So unless you just ABHOR manual focusing, you definitely should give this lens a try.

This lens as good if not better than the Nikon equivalent, if you don't mind manual focus. With the focus confirmation chip its almost as easy to focus as an AF-S lens.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I've owned my 12-24 and 18-200 Nikkor lenses for years. They serve me well but I've always missed the speed and narrow depth of field delivered by my old 50mm 1.4.My new D7100 was all the excuse I needed to get something to satisfy the want. I gave a cursory look to the Nikkor 85 but knew I couldn't justify the cost with my limited use of the lens. Then I read reviews of the Sigma 85. Half the cost of the Nikkor and pretty darned sharp, said the owners. It was then I stumbled on the Rokinon. At $[*], it's less than half of the Sigma but I would have to give up autofocus. Again the reviews on build and performance were quite good. Manual focus was fine with me... get me back to my Nikkormat days! Most every review complimented the bokeh produced and that was one of my main goals for the new glass. For $[*], I'd take the chance and was rewarded. The build is solid and feels precise. The job of manual focusing is fun and no more difficult than changing focus points and/or focus areas inside the camera. It's great for shooting videos, too.I'll never see my results side by side with the Nikkor but am thrilled by what I'm getting. I bought a variable ND filter to let me shoot wide open in the tropical sun. In summary, the Rokinon 85mm 1.4 is a stunning lens at a price that's more than appropriate for my usage. My only "con" is the difficulty in figuring out what to do with the extra $[*].

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I bought this lens because I had borrowed one for the day from a friend. I fell in love with it and had to have one of my own. It has a shallow dof when wide open but when you get the focus right it is still super sharp at f1.4. Great portrait lens. Solid construction. Precise and smooth manual focus with a great feel. All around this is an amazing lens. Much cheaper than Nikons autofocus version as well!

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Ive used this lens for portraits, and also for landscapes, pet shots, even closeups. It begs to be used wide open, as it performs just as well or better than stopped down to middle aperatures. Yes, it has a fair bit of out-of-focus chromatic aberration, but it's not objectionable. The lens appears very well built, and should last. For 90% of any conceivable uses, it's a match for the expensive f1.4 85mm lenses.

It's a joy to focus, as with that shallow depth of field, it snaps in and out in a dramatic fashion. There's an added bonus with this lens - skill! I remember now the joy of manual focussing - it's what engaged photography is all about.

I look forward to trying it for videography - I just need to hire a focus puller!

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Most of my work is portrait so I need a good prime lens around this focal length. I considered the Nikkor equivalent but after reading various reviews I decided to give this one a try. I'm glad I did. Wide open the DOF is almost non-existent at close focus. You can use that to your advantage of course but it comes at a price since there's no AF to rely on. That's no problem for me as I've been using MF lenses for years and I trust my eye. But if you're not a MF veteran you may find the need to focus inconvenient. (Like other reviews have said the focus confirm chip isn't always accurate. I suspect there's a manufacturing spread on this and you may get lucky and receive one that is always accurate.)

Technically the optical quality is outstanding and I can't add anything new here to what others have already posted.

I've have been looking at this lens for about 6 months now. I was a hard decision between the rokinon, nikon and sigma 85mm lens. However, once i looked at various photography forums about this lens I was amazed about how alot of buyers were comparing this lens againist similiar lenses. This is a all manual lens so zoom with you feet, it will take a couple of shots to get to use to it but once you have figured it out the results are astounishing. A great lens take will sure you in both still photography and dslr video. The AF confirmation chip is a waste of money its not very accurate save yourself a few dollars and buy one without this feature if you can.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I was initialy hesitant about buying an inexpensive lens for my D3s, however, I have been quite pleased with this product. It is a great focal length and very fast. I've used it for outdoor shooting - flowers and wild birds. The image quality is much better than I would expect for the product. It is easy to docus and works well with the Nikon "in focus indicator." I would definitely recommend it.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I'm no pro, I really wanted a 50 mm instead of an 85mm. I get made fun of sometimes at how far away I have to get to get just 4 people in the frame, but that's ok. The quality of fotos is definitely great. I hope to get even better photos now that I actually learned about the green dot that tells you that the Focus Confirm Chip has confirmed focus, because it's a challenge even with my glasses on to tell when it's focused. It's so precise in fact it can be a little frustrating at times that one person is in perfect focus but the person 6 inches farther away is out of focus. Over all a good experience and I love being able to finally take photos in low light without being grainy, and I'm very glad I splurged for the 1.4 and not the 2.8, which would not have been enough difference for me from my 3.5f/s. Aside from the that it gets lots of oooos and ahhhhhs because of the aspherical look.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

I typically only like the sharpest lenses I can find and this lens is not the sharpest at least at f1.4, but sharp enough. It is really intended for close portraits where everything else is soft including the subjects skin. Best thing is that I find it is easy to focus without looking at the green dot (Nikon) or if I use the dot it helps to reassure me that I am focused properly.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

This lens is a great affordable alternate to nikon or canons fast aperture 85mm primes .it produces great bokeh wide open while remaining razor sharp on the subject .this lens though is ideally suited as a portrait lens or for landscapes due to it being manual focus only .the focus confirmation chip version is a must though as trying to nail focus wide open can be a challenge and it assists greatly .as for down sides one it manually focus so it does limit its use to certain types of photography secondly its not weather sealed .

Only thing missing is autofocus. the quality seems as good as any other except maybe the real top end glass offered from Nikon, Canon, Etc, It's certainly as good and or better than any of their run of the mill lenses. The focus is stiff but I expect that to get better with use. The focus is super critical when shooting wide open so maybe the tightness is a good thing causing me to slow down. the images seem sharp with good color and the quality of the out of focus "bokeh" are worth the price of the lens.

Comments about Rokinon 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical Lens for Nikon With Focus Confirm Chip:

Bought this lens 6 months ago, I can't be happier with this purchase, at the beginning I had a hard time getting used to manual focus, but after many, many shots of practice I finally managed to live without the AF, the focus confirm chip is a great help. This lens is great for shooting stills, portraits (nice bokeh) if you want to shoot action it will be very challenging for you.
I own a D5000 and the lens feels great on my camera, feels very solid. Finally I have to say that a f/1.4 for this price is really a bargain!
