The compact 600 dpi DS40 Digital Photo Printer from DNP combines high-speed printing with dye-sub technology to produce high-quality photos from 2 x 6" up to 6 x 8" in size. The printer can produce high-quality 4 x 6 photos in under 8 seconds. As your printing needs increase and one printer isn't enough, you can quadruple your print speed by connecting 4 DS40 models. Once the printers are linked you can stack them to conserve space thanks to their flat-top design.

The DS40 uses a unique internal print method to protect the paper from dust and other contaminants and is easy to maintain thanks to its front-panel media loading and maintenance. It includes a tray and spacers for 6 x 8" prints. Additionally, for making 5 x 7" prints, optional spacers are available.

High Image Quality
By installing newly developed heat control IC and a brand new printhead, the printer is able to put out high-quality images even during high-speed printing

As an owner of two DS40 units, I travel shooting Ballroom dance comps and use both to print between 1200 and 4000 prints per event. At this volume and constant use, I can confidently say that these units are not confidence inspiring as I have never shot an event without multiple jams of the paper roll and occasionally the ribbon. However, one thing we have noticed is that if you run out of paper but not ribbon, you really need to change both anyway. A new roll of paper with a partially used ribbon seems to cause the bulk of jams for some reason. We started changing both at the same time and things were much smoother and less stressful.

Don't tip the printer on its side or upside down when transporting the printers if there are trimmings in the collection cup as they will get lodged in the cutter or paper path resulting in a printer offline for 20-45 minutes.

The latest firmware and drivers offered significantly improved color and exposure over the original software from when we purchased these.

No other printer is as cost effective on small prints. If it didn't jam, it would get 5 stars.

    First the good news.
This printer is FAST! Fastest 4x6 printer I have used. The printer is a tank. Built to withstand the road. Color as good as every dye sub I have run it against.

    Now the bad.
Whoever said this printer is easy to load has never used a Hiti printer. I own a Hiti 510L and can tell you Hiti printers are the fastest and easiest printers to load. Not only that, the ribbons come encased inside of a plastic shell. You just slide it in and close the door. When you want to move the printer you just slide it out. DS 40 ribbons are just two spools. Good luck if you drop it while putting it in and it's ridiculous trying to find a a decent way to store it when traveling. Hiti paper loading is just as easy. Everything is color coded and it just drops right in. They even give you the 5x7 spacers. You have to pay extra to get them from DNP.

I bought this printer because of DNP's Mobile Party Print software and though a bit buggy to set up, it seems to be working ok. If not for that software package I would probably bought another Hiti. Even though it is slightly slower, the Hiti is much easier to load and that is really important when things jam up in the middle of a gig.

I am VERY concerned about many of the reviews I read about DNP paper jams. I have run thousands of prints through my 510L without a single jam or ribbon break. Only time will tell.

It's fast and built sturdy but the loading design shaves two stars off of it.

This is a work horse,, setting up the drivers were a little awkward, but called the dnp tec support,, they were great and walked right through it, the paper must be tamped down and very flush,, if not you'll get a small white border on the bottom of your pictures,, I am planning to get the ds80 soon!

Comments about DNP DS 40 Professional Photo Printer:

I dont usually do product reviews but I find myself relying more and more on customers just like me who use products to help me to determine if I should buy. So this is my way of giving back.
          Now onto the review:
This is a great product. Out of the box, I was up and running in about 10 minutes. The 4x6 photos are great quality indistinguishable from a lab. Prints are fast- very fast 8 seconds flat. Just taking into consideration the price of the media (paper and film) the price per print is is roughly 14 cents for 4x6s and 39 cents for 5x7s.
This printer is a monster. It is a Jack and the Beanstalk giant running leap ahead of consumer versions. I like this over HITI and the Mitsubishi.
The only thing I would say to take into consideration before buying this printer to run a business or such, make sure that you will never need the 8x10 print. Why? Look at the DNP DS80. it is the 8x10, 8x12 version. For 88 cents per print- it may still fit the bill. If you purchase 8x12 paper, you can print 2 4x6s on one page and then cut them. This will increase your price to 44 cents 4x6, but you also gain the capability the larger 8x10 picture. (Just something to think about.) I will also be purchase the DS80 to cover most on location needs from 4x6s to 8x10s.
The only thing that you may consider as a negative is the size and weight. It is a heavy unit - it weighs 30 pounds and you must hook up a laptop to work. But it is built well with a metal shell.
If you read all this, thanks. I hope it will help with your purchase.

After much research and comparing high end Epson to the Dye-Sub printers I purchased both the DS40 & DS80 for a studio.

These have exceeded my expectations in both speed and quality of the photographs.

The printers themselves are HEAVY, seem to be designed for many years of use; the outside is metal, compact design, and stackable.

The paper has a heavy weight and feels good in your hands. The paper is so robust that my roller paper cutter doesn't cut it. We have to resort to a shear cutter.

Comments about DNP DS 40 Professional Photo Printer:

This is an awesome printer. I liked it so much, I bought two more - one dedicated to 4x6's, and another for 5x7's. and the third (a DS80) for 8x10's.

The updated driver for the Mac (which works for OSX 10.8.5 Mountain Lion by the way) is a little finicky, and far too often results in "incompatible paper size" message, but other than that, the machines work perfectly.

Beautiful colour out of the box, fast, sharp prints. Easy to load paper and dye sub film. Build is very robust.

This is the printer they are using for 4x6 and 5x7. That sold me. I have ran two rolls through it so far and this was the right choice for me. The paper and ribbon are easy to load. Print time is reasonable and it is compact. My recommendation if you transport this printer is get a padded case. I read some concerns about print drivers with MACs. The print driver from the website loaded into my Macbook Pro. I use iPhoto to do minor edits and I printed directly from iPhoto without a hitch.

Comments about DNP DS 40 Professional Photo Printer:

Comments about DNP DS 40 Professional Photo Printer:

This prints 4x6 photos in about 8 seconds with my photo booths. With the addition of the 2" cut (printing two photo strips and cutting them automatically) this printer is a must. I've never had an issue with either of my DS40's and I highly recommend. It's on the heavy side but I think that's a common theme with Dye sub printers.

This is the best printer if you do event photography or even at your studio. I used it for the first time at a very large event and I was able to print and sell enough pictures to pay off its initial cost in one event. It prints perfect quality at perfect speed and its so user friendly. The only thing I wish they would add (but that takes no star away) is a slit hole on the side to see how much paper is left. Please get this printer and come back tell me if I lied.

Comments about DNP DS 40 Professional Photo Printer:
