The 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0 is a cross-platform, high-capacity, high-performance external drive, well-suited to handle the backup and storage demands of creative professionals. Designed to work with either your Windows or Mac computer, this drive features a large capacity of 2TB, a 7200rpm disk speed, 32MB of onboard cache, and an impressive mix of three different interfaces. It has a blazing fast USB 3.0 port, an eSATA 3Gbps port, and two FireWire 800 ports.

Although Mac OS X typically doesn't support USB 3.0 connections, LaCie has created a driver that allows you to use this interface with your Mac (also requires a LaCie USB 3.0 card for your computer). Also with regard to Mac computers, the two FireWire 800 ports allow you to daisy-chain the drive. With the drive, you can transfer data at up to 130MB/s via USB 3.0, 115MB/s via eSATA, and 85MB/s via FireWire 800.

The drive also features a heat-sink design for heat dissipation as well as a programmable eco-management mode. It comes with Genie Backup Assistant and Intego Backup Assistant software for backing up your data and restoring any data that you might have accidentally deleted. Whether you stack it with other d2 Quadra drives, mount it in a rack, or stand it upright, this drive is a versatile, exceptional backup and storage solution for the consumer or creative professional.

The Professional Choice for Performance and Reliability

This drive is an excellent choice for creative professionals who need fast data transfer speeds and a large storage capacity. This drive features a 7200rpm disk speed as well as 2TB of storage. Plus, with the USB 3.0 interface, it can achieve data transfer speeds of up to 130MB/s
The drive can also transfer data at a fast rate of 115MB/s via the eSATA interface and 85MB/s via the FireWire 800 interface

The Professional Choice for Cross-Platform Applications

The d2 Quadra features a variety of interfaces that work with both Mac and Windows computers, including one USB 3.0 port, two FireWire 800 ports for daisy chaining, as well as an eSATA 3Gbps port. With all of its interfaces, the d2 Quadra has universal connectivity, so it is easy to back up and restore any workstation, no matter the configuration and interface
Thanks to LaCie's USB 3.0 driver for Mac OS, the USB 3.0 port is compatible on Mac computers
The USB 3.0 port is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and the FireWire 800 ports are backwards compatible with FireWire 400

The Professional Choice for Design

The unique, fanless aluminum heat sink design provides an increased surface area, keeping it quiet, safe, and free from dust inside
The drive can also stand upright, be stacked horizontally with other drives, or even be rackmounted to save desktop space
The drive is a superb solution for heavy storage users who want off-site backups and archives of any work environment
For superior energy efficiency, this drive also has a programmable eco mode, which automatically conserves energy if the drive is inactive for a certain period of time
This drive is recyclable and ROHS-compliant

The Professional Choice for Functional and User-Centric Features

With the preloaded LaCie Desktop Manager, you can easily configure the shortcut button to launch the application of your choice in one push and configure your drive's eco mode
The two-color front LED indicator allows you to easily check the drive's status
For a simple and user-friendly backup and file retrieval, LaCie's also included the Genie Backup Assistant software and Intego Backup Assistant software with data restore for Windows and Mac computers

This is my 11th or 12th LaCie external harddrive over time, in a system that requires 6 to be up and running at all times. I am a photographer and these hard-drives hold all my archives -- so they are vital to my business. I find they are wonderful, easy to use and reliable for at least 5 years, comparatively cheap for the vital job they do, and so nice to look at... Yet eventually they will fail, and when they do, they will need to be replaced. Often the failure can be avoided -- it's as simple as replacing the power cord (which LaCie will send you free of charge, since they know this to be a problem -- and I always keep extras), but sometimes the machine has simply run it's course. Fortunately, they usually don't die suddenly, but conk out slowly, making noises and giving you warning and time to buy a new one and transfer the data (but because of this, everything I have is saved onto at least 2 separate drives).

Let me start by saying that I own 18 LaCie d2 Quadra USB2/firewire drives, most of them 2TB. I use them to store video for a large doc film project as well as other video projects.

I have never had an issue with these drives. They have been a cornerstone of my work flow and of my confidence in that work flow.

I thought nothing of buying the new version of this drive with USB3. But I have had a world of pain and angst since their purchase.

The new drives froze my MacPro tower every time I used them. Then I switched the drives to my brand new (2 month old) MacBook Pro laptop, which also froze repeatedly. The drives would shut off and not remount. Other times I could not unmount the drives. I also had trouble transferring files.

I am always on a deadline -- the fact that these drives were clearly not ready for primetime is absolutely unacceptable. I sent them all back and scoured other stores for the last remaining d2 Quadras they had with USB 2. I found four and bought them up.

I searched for others online who had similar issues the day I received my drives and experienced the problems. These drives were brandy new on the market so I did not find anyone who had problems that particular day. However, two days later I searched again and found many many people who had experienced the same issues I did.

I'm sure LaCie will fix this issue eventually, but COME ON, it's unprofessional to have released these drives before the kinks were worked out. MY CAREER DEPENDS ON ELECTRONICS LIKE THESE WORKING PROPERLY RIGHT OUT OF THE BOX.

So disappointed in a company (LaCie) I had come to view almost as a partner in my work over the years.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:

I have been using Lacie drives for close to 10 years. The only brand that hasn't crashed on me. Good interface options. Good value for the money. When I need storage I consistently purchase Lacie drives. Using them for backup, ProTools and photos.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:

I bought the 2TB LaCIe d2 Quadra to replace a five-year-old 1 TB LaCie that never failed me and saved my bacon twice. (Best to replace an aging hard drive at your convenience rather than at the hard drive's whim.) This model has connectors for FireWire 800 for use with my current older iMac and USB 3,0 for a future iMac. Can also be easily partitioned for use with both Time Machine and another daily backup program such as SuperDuper.

I've only had the drive for a couple weeks, but it plug and played very nicely with my old iMac. I've been using it to store video footage for editing on Premiere. I like the way it fits on the desk and I've had no issues with it so far. I'll check back in if that changes.

I'm a heavy lightroom user and store my Raw files on an external drive to work off of. Lightroom performance has improved significantly, after switching to this drive. Granted I'm now using firewire 2 instead of 1. Also my other externals from OtherWorld, while very reliable, always run hot. The LaCie is only warm to the touch. So far, this drive is a winner.

I use this drive to DVR from a DirecTv and bypass the smaller drive in the DVR. PROS: It was plug and play, even with the unique use I had for it. No issues. The drive is quiet, does not heat up too much, has a good vertical stand as well as silicon strips for horizontal use allowing it to fit easily into smaller spaces.CONS: It has a quarter size bright blue light on the top front which can be annoying but was taken care of by covering it with some aluminum foil.Have used it for a few weeks without any issues. Since it stays on all the time, I do not know how long it will perform but seamless so far.

Just increased the size of my hard drive to 1TB so I thought I should increase the size of my backup drive too, to a 2TB-er. So I again went with LaCie. This is my 3rd one purchased because my other 2 (for other computers) have been dependable. I like low drama/"just works" sort of products and this fits the bill.

So easy to set up. Has 2 Firewire connects which I needed for daisy chaining additional hard drives for back up.

Perfect storage and backup. Intended to have the second as a backup for the first.... Transfer of data is quick with USB 3 and expect when chained together the drives will be just perfect for my needs.

Comments about 2TB LaCie d2 Quadra with USB 3.0:

I was at my wits end trying to deal with my sound library using USB and a slower drive. Changing over to this drive has greatly improved the performance of my entire music production system. I use this as a dedicated libray with the eSata connection. All of my sounds are 64 bit and require fast speed to play in real-time. I tend to use about 10 or more sounds at once, so this can be a burden to a drive, but this drive responds well. I have not used this for storage of files, but it has plenty of space left for that if I need it. I also love that I can plug it in with USB 3.0 once I upgrade my system, so room for growth. My only gripe is that the software backup put itself onto my startup programs and reminds me to back up every time I boot up. I don't use this drive for that, so it is unnecessary.

Anything higher than a 2 TB is less proven and documented. This is as big as you want to go. I trust LaCie and have not been left down with my 1 TB nor my 2 TB.

No problems with this drive, however I do not use LaCie's software (which enabled the button on the front pannel).

I have used a number of LaCie drives, this replaces a 5-6 year old drive that was no longer spinning up. Some of LaCie's four-prong power supplies are bad which these newer drives do not used.

Data transfer rates are very good. Functionally, I am very impressed. My few complaints are the weight of the hard drive is a little loud compared to my others. Function over form though... works and does it job, but the power cable seems cheap and flimsy and the FW800 ports don't hold the cable very securely. I'm happy with the purchase, but it's great for the price. If I had unlimited funds, I'd probably get the G-drive the next time.

I've had one of these for well over a year and have had nothing but trouble with it. It refused to work with my 2010 iMac, I believed that was because I had issues with the Firewire port on my iMac (since taken care of with two warranty repairs from Apple before that machine finally became useable) then refused to work over Firewire 800 with my 2012 MacPro. Have to restart the disc daily and perform disk repair on it to bring it back to life. Obviously some power management issues with this disc. I have done the firmware upgrade on it but it doesn't help. I'm done with the D2 line from Lacie, I expect better than this for that kind of money. It's a pity, I've had great experience with their Rugged line of portable discs, but this one is total rubbish.
