The AudioBox 1818VSL from Presonus is a an 18 input/18 output USB 2.0 audio and MIDI interface that allows for monitoring with low-latency effects. Using the computer's CPU and PreSonus Virtual StudioLive software, the interface provide reverb and delay effects and the same Fat Channel compression, limiting, semi-parametric EQ, and high-pass filter, as the PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 digital mixer, all with inaudible latency.

Compact and rugged, the interface offers two front-panel microphone/instrument combo and six microphone/line combo inputs, phantom power switchable in groups of four, and ten line-level outputs. It features the same high-headroom, Class-A XMAX preamps as the StudioLive mixers, and has 24-bit/96kHz converters with 114dB dynamic range for clear, clean audio.

The preamplifiers offer three key advantages - high voltage, discrete components and Class-A circuitry. The net result is low noise, wide dynamic range, extended frequency response, and most importantly, musicality and transparency. The unit is housed in a ruggedly built metal chassis. Clip lights are provided for all channels.

The interface includes an 26 x 8 software mixer that along with a laptop or other computer running VSL allows you to mix a studio session or live show featuring a full band, all while monitoring and recording with or without real-time processing. Seamlessly integrated with the included Studio One Artist DAW and VSL, the AudioBox 1818VSL interface works with virtually all Mac and Windows audio-recording software.

Comments about PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL - USB 2.0 Recording System:

This product and the included software bundle are top notch. There will be a learning curve associated with this equipment even for those with prior DAW experience, but it's well worth the trouble.I purchased it to mixdown and digitize some old analog recordings I had made some time ago. The result was better than I had hoped. The material sounds fantastic and I didn't have to do a lot of tweaking, I just used some of the included presets.
Once you learn Studio One you'll be happy with the results.

Comments about PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL - USB 2.0 Recording System:

If you need 8 tracks then this will be a great product for you, presonus always has top notch pre-amps, equipment, and interfaces. My problem was that I bought this to expand another unit, without realizing that you can't use it as a standalone expansion unit. While it does have ADAT & S/PDIF inputs & outputs, it must be connected via usb with access to the included drivers to function (from what I can tell). With most software production packages, you only have the choice to enable one set of drivers. That really is my only gripe. If you want to use it as the primary and get another expander that will work as well, just not the way I tried to set it up. As for good things, it is one of the lowest latency USB interfaces on the market and the VSL is a very nice feature.

Comments about PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL - USB 2.0 Recording System:

I purchased this interface to record upcoming podcasts in the field for our corporate clients. I have been running tests to make sure it performs well and there are a few issues.

The pre-amps sound good, but the noise floor is a little higher than I hoped.

The popping and clicking people are talking about is an issue. But after making sure I had my sample rates set the same across all my system settings (Mac OS) and my DAW that seems to have cleared it up.

I ran an hour of multi tracking to make sure nothing would crash during a long session (hopefully). That ran just fine.

I did have some issues with monitoring in Adobe Audition, but it's probably user error as I'm new to that software.

Overall, after testing, it looks like this will be a reliable unit with a few annoyances. Since there are only a handful of units in this category, I I'd buy it again. But if I had the chance, I'd love to test some of the others by Steinberg and Tascam.

Comments about PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL - USB 2.0 Recording System:

I needed an audio interface to Adobe Premiere CS6 and since I already use a Studiolive mixer for live sound with the IPad, this seemed like a natural why to go. The IPad interface works great. I wish the channel strips had scribble boxes to customize the names of inputs and outputs like the VSL does and hope a future software release will do just that.
