The Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera is a sophisticated pocket-camera, designed for those looking to go beyond the norm. Compact and simple though it may be, the V-LUX 30 certainly has a number of features, many of which cannot be matched by other cameras in this genre. To start, consider the 14.1Mp sensor. This is 14.1MP of actual resolution, not interpolated. Beautiful, detailed images are possible with the simplicity of what is generally considered a point-shoot-point.
Along with the impressive resolution of the camera, is the respectable lens. The Leica DC-Vario Elmar Lens is a high-quality zoom that has an equivalent focal length of a 24-384mm, available for use in both still and video capture. A range this wide means that extreme wide-angle and impressive telephoto images can be taken, not to mention macro capture. The lens also features a 16x optical zoom for non-distorted image quality, even when the frame is shot from extremely close-up.
Like all things Leica, this camera's design follows the principles of form and function. More than aesthetically pleasing, the camera is also ergonomically crafted - allowing for ease of use, a much appreciated aspect when on vacation or at a party; both of which are ideal times for the V-LUX 30 to shine. The controls of the camera are positioned in an easily accessible manner, with the mode dial on the camera's top plate for fast and simple switching between various modes and manual operation. The video release button is on the top of the camera as well for quicker access than on previous version of this camera. Of course, the 30's most user-friendly usage option might be the touchscreen display which allows for intuitive menu navigation, capture, and review.
As previously alluded, the V-LUX 30 is more than a still camera, it's also a video camera. The 1080i AVCHD movie function caters to those who crave video capture. Movies are not only recorded at this high resolution, they are also marked with GPS data for easy and useful archiving of files, and sharing on social media networks. It is also worth mentioning that the camera provides this GPS feature for still images as well. Additionally, along with storing location information in the EXIF data, the GPS feature also provides the user with other options. Some of these include access to one million points of interest, a display of all the sights in the immediate neighborhood where the user is shooting, and then some.
The V-LUX 30 comes with Adobe editing software. Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 and Adobe Premiere Elements 9 are both user-friendly software options that provide a range of functions for the user in post-production. Premiere Elements 9 is used for editing video footage while Photoshop Elements 9 provides the user with a number of useful photo editing tools.
When shooting with longer focal lengths (telephoto) or in poor light, optical image stabilization effectively prevents blurred and shaky pictures. Flexible use of the sensor format guarantees full accommodation of the entire zoom range (35mm equivalent: 24-384mm) in all possible image aspect ratios, no matter whether set for 4:3, 3:2, or 16:9. The maximum resolution of 14.1Mp is available for images shot with an aspect ratio of 4:3
The 3D feature guarantees spellbinding photos, as well. The camera combines two selected photos from a series, creates a 'stereo picture pair' and saves this as a 3D photo in MPO format. These pictures are compatible with all 3D screens available on the market

I have been a full time working photographer for 33 years. I have owned every camera imaginable as well as being a collector. I am very picky when it comes to any purchase especially cameras and this has not disappointed me. User friendly including menu selections and all controls. Lens quality is excellent and the design of the camera itself is very Leica like. To this point I really do not have any real negative comments about the V-LUX 30. If you do purchase the camera get the brown leather case its beautiful!!!!!!

the camera is very well designed, and nice to handle, almost ideal, except, when I loaded the images into the computer bring them into 1:1 , the image quality really disappoint me. the smudged pixels, like someone run a bad filters, the noises in the blue channel is so noticeable, not just in the low lighting situations, but even in the normal exposure is not acceptable.
The highlights is too thin too.
I am keep hope there is a way to improve the image quality, I tried run through Lightroon, but the images are not getting better.
I got the The Lumx ZS10, has the same problem, I brought it right back,
I had much a higher expectations for this camera.and hope the Leica will be the better, but the result is the same.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
I am a total amateur when it comes to photography and this fully automatic Leica gives me the stunning and inimitable light of the Leica without it being exorbitantly expensive.
It comes with photoshop editor for it which is a total bonus. Really this camera is nearly the same as the Panasonoic Lumix, but the branding and benefits of the Leica are stunning and rewarding.
Buy a spare battery- I just got a generic one since it is the back up but its useful to always have one handy to pop in and go or take as a spare on a weekender or long day of shooting.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
Portability with good picture quality. I like the long reach of the lens; however, handholding is a challenge. The vibration reduction is helpful. Decent build quality. Quick turn on and easy menu system. It has a lot of features geared for the amateur shooter plus the ability to shoot manual. Would like to override the auto-focus occasionally.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
It is anything BUT a small point and shoot; it has more capability than my full size DSLR. After all, it's a Leica. The video recordings are sharp and can be zoomed while recording. The menu is intuitive and provides on screen descriptions. The 16X optical zoom is smooth, the GPS is totally automatic, face recognition is automatic, and the many scene modes do much of the work of PhotoShop in the camera. There are so many features that I may not ever lug my heavy DSLR around.

My first Leica and I was really looking forward to owning and using a brand known for its quality.
Opening the box with excited fingers - first sight made me think a plastic replica had been sent by mistake.
Out of the box - what a disapointment - it felt and looked cheap.
No more Leicas for me.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
The size, weight, image quality and features are outstanding. The camera is well designed and functional. The zoom range is spectacular as is the large display. We shot a wedding (as guests) and took it on a road trip. In both cases the camera performed flawlessly.
The camera has two flaws in my opinion: 1) the battery depleats fairly quickly. We turned off the GPS, but it's still drained after a few hundred images. 2) No viewfinder. Neither of these is a big problem. We bought a spare battery and the viewfinder is only an issue in extreme lighting conditions.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
So far I love it. I need more time with it to improve my low light skills. I'm looking forward to a guide book to give me tips & tricks. Great zoom. Tripod really helps while zoomed out, otherwise it's pretty shakey. Small in size is nice. Camera is very light, I'd prefer a more sustantial feel like the D LUX 4 has. The light weight made me instantly think negative before I even used it. I have gotten some excellent shots and am excited to learn the camera better, especially in low light. GPS function is cool, but really drains the battery, I'm using airplane mode now and am getting better life from a charge.

Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
I was brought up with Leica cameras, M2,3,4 35mm. When photography went digital, I went with it because of the ease of use. I used the older Leica's less and less, because they were so heavy to carry I have been wanting to get a Leica, but really wanted a simple, compact yet flexible camera. When the V-LUX came out, I got interested. My son bought the V-LUX 20 and I was really impressed with his photos. So I did it, when the 30 was announced I made the plunge. It feels so good in my hands, the pictures are amazing, in auto mode. I am anxious to learn all the attributes of this fine machine. Thank you for asking.

I am an amateur photographer, my last camera was a Cannon G11 which I love, but this one is smaller and easier to carry. I have taken a few sets and I like the results. Comments about Leica V-LUX 30 Digital Camera:
I work in media and entertainment so I'm always on the go. I shoot as a hobby and while I would love an SLR I often just don't have room to carry one along. I had the V-Lux 20 and find the 30 a noticeable improvement for stills and video. The CMOS sensor delivers very clear and naturally colorful shots. I find the focus faster and overall better performance in low light than the 20. I've noticed a less battery life (so I keep the GPS off) and the new touch screen feature can be a little awkward. But overall I'm happy I made a trade towards the VLux 30 at B&H! This little camera is quite a bit of power in my pocket!
