        Comments about Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper (8 x 10", 50 Sheets):

I print digital negatives with curves developed for this paper in a printing frame under the enlarger.

You must run this paper through the processes one sheet at a time. I start in the developer face down and then turn over to make sure the face is equally wet. Continue agitating the tray for the development time. Move to stop bath face down. Put into fixer face down and agitate for one full minute. Move to a quick water bath, then into a hypo clearing agent for 4 minutes. Then another quick wash and into the print washer for 30 minutes. If you try to do too much at once or don't keep this paper face down you may get brown spots. If you follow these instructions you won't. Doing multiple prints to save time can make a real mess!

        Final results are beautiful.

This is the most beautiful paper I've ever used. Subtle glimmer, super rich blacks, great weight. Pricy but worth it 100%.

        A beautiful tactile alternative.

        Comments about Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper (8 x 10", 50 Sheets):

So I think I have a new paper love: Ilford multigrade 300 Art.

It is a 100% cotton rag paper, and while I don't know that I'd go so far as to say it's like a cold press, it certainly feels like it belongs to the watercolor family. It has a very prominent, elegant tooth to it that has a fiberous quality that is almost felt-like with a beautiful eggshell sheen.

Most mat finishes lack the ability to produce dense, inky blacks due to the scattering effect (causing blacks to render more chalky/charcoaly), but even though the texture of this paper is not a gloss, surprisingly rich blacks are attainable. It has a beautiful, long toned emulsion without a baryta base that somehow makes it feel more integrated to the paper base. The base is slightly warm, but the emulsion is beautifully neutral... Not like that greenish cast you get with Ilford's MGIV. It almost looks gold toned right out of the box.

Also, another surprising thing given the prominence of the tooth of this paper is it's resolving power. I printed TMZ 3200 in Rodinal on it at a size less than 8x10 and the grain was still sharply articulated, meaning it wasn't swallowed up in surface texture. In fact it really integrated quite well. I didn't tone or bleach because I wanted to see how it dried down, and I am so happy with it that the only reason I would do either is to see how it would handle it. I don't think these prints need either process.

So I has a nice refined look that is somewhat romantic, but will work just as well with modern graphic approaches as well. I kinda love this stuff and see myself using it quite a bit. If you print in a darkroom I highly recommend picking some up, or even requesting it from a custom lab for exhibition prints. I doubt anyone would regret it.

          Comments about Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper (8 x 10", 50 Sheets):

Provides beautiful warm highlights. Great contrast range, able to hold detail in dense areas while still showing great highlights. I have used it for 2nd pass lith printing as well as traditional B&W. This paper has caused me to reprint significant portion fo my portfolio. I especially like it for old barns, churches where texture and warm tone add to overall feel.

            Comments about Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper (8 x 10", 50 Sheets):

I have been using Ilford FB and Warmtone papers and gave this new paper a try. It produces beautiful prints with real warmth and depth. I find it great for portraits, in particular. Once dry, the paper is easier to flatten than FB and has a beautiful, subtly textured surface that avoids strong reflections. It is more delicate that FB paper when wet but is less prone to creasing. It is more buoyant in water due to its lower density that FB, however the Art300 paper is thicker and feel high quality. I am now looking forward to trying larger sizes.

            Comments about Ilford Multigrade Art 300 Paper (8 x 10", 50 Sheets):

I hoped that Ilford Art 300 would be a suitable replacement for the last of my Art Document paper which is now about finished. It is twice as heavy, with great D-Max and wonderful overall tonality. Perhaps heavier than necessary, but it exudes quality. If you want textured paper, then you can't go wrong with this.
