Works great with my 17" MBP from early 2012. Thunderbolt is available but only has USB2. This allows me to use USB3.0 - but has limited range. Portable HDDs are out unless additional power is provided and only some card readers and flash drives are support at the moment. Luckily the Lexar dual slot reader is supported and works fantastically. Usually about 3X as fast as in a USB2 slow. Just watch if you leave a device plugged in while the computer sleeps. Itll shut off power to the card reader, and OSX yells that they have been ejected improperly.

Despite various bad reviews I gave this adapter a shot since if it worked it would save me having to upgrade to a USB 3.0 Laptop. When the first adapter did not work I called Sonnet Tech's support and the support rep determined that the reader had not been programmed correctly. I exchanged it twice and all three had the identical problem so I returned the last one. Even if the adapter worked I would be leery of using it for large data transfers since it doesn't really lock into the PCI slot and could very easily bumped out while writing files.

Comments about Sonnet 2-Port USB 3.0 ExpressCard / 34 Expansion Card (Mac & Windows):

It has some problems. It's fragile. Easily gets disconnected from slot ejecting unexpectedly the devices connected to it. Doesn't power portable drives. Sometimes computer gets frozen when connecting the adapter, forcing to restart. Not sure about the transfer speed on the Mac.

Add USB 3 to old MacBook Pro 17".

              Need to install driver.

Some USB 3 hard disk need power adapter, and I believe the card not able to provide enough power to start the hard disk.

Not able to use USB 3 for those 2.5 external hard disk without power adapter.

Comments about Sonnet 2-Port USB 3.0 ExpressCard / 34 Expansion Card (Mac & Windows):

This card works on a MacBook Pro 17" with Lion 10.7.4, with the driver from the Sonnet web site, and also works in the Sonnet "Echo" Thunderbolt to ExpressCard adapter. I had tried other cards, with other drivers, which didn't work at all.

The speed I get is not great, but that may be a limitation of the disks or of the disk enclosure. It is still at least twice as fast as USB2.

Hotplugging is very unreliable. Sometimes I need to take out the card and push it back in for a new disk to be mounted. Sometimes even that didn't help and I needed to reboot. At other times, I can eject a disk, connect a new one, and it works. But eventually, with some patience, it does work.

(In Linux, the card works without any additional installs, but there is also a hotplugging problem, solved with boot parameters)

This card really doesn't work with most external powered drives. Using the 5v external power does not help. It's not worth the hassle, or guessing game. I have USB 3 on my other machines and every USB 3 drive I own works well with the 3rd party expansion cards. I was hoping to have USB 3 on my Mac laptops, but it looks like I wasted my money. B&H doesn't take computer hardware back. Don't make the same mistake.

Just got of the phone with tech support. Not only is the card locking up my 2009 17 Macbook Pro but will not recognize any of my portable 3.0 drives. It will recognize a powered drive if the card is placed in after boot up. Tech support cautioned it has minimum power capabilities for todays power hungry portable drives, so don't expect it to work with many.
