The AudioStar Controller from Meade is the next generation of Meade's popular AutoStar. The AutoStar has morphed into the AudioStar by enhancing it with audio files and an internal speaker.
The AudioStar Controller is compatible with all Meade ETX-90 and 125 models, LXD-75 and LX90 series telescopes, and other "497" Autostar equipped models.
This computerized celestial object locating system plugs into the telescope's handbox port allowing a quick telescope alignment. It replaces the AutoStar Contoller with one that includes audio.
The AudioStar has over 30,000 celestial objects in its database. It has GOTO and tracking capability, multiple Guided Tours, digital positional readouts, a database of up to 200 user-defined objects, 9-Speed dual-axis movement, and the ability to link with a PC using optionally available software and cord. Coiled cord and instructions included.

This Audiostar replaces the original handheld Autostar. It is somewhat easier to use, and more user friendly. The system is complex, and for my money, it is more complex than it needs to be. It could be simplified without losing any detail, and it could be improved by common naming convension, such as using the word Utilities, or Overview, or Close Celestial Objects, instead of just Objects.
It takes a while to parse their language, and any interested person can do so, but it could be revised to reflect common language found in all computers.

As a long time heavy user (10 years) of the original 497 AUTOSTAR with my Meade LX90 scope, I was disappointed when the handbox failed. Research revealed that the old tried and true model had been replaced by an enhanced device, the AUDIOSTAR which comes complete with a voice and a process for determining the direction of north. Being an old pilot with hearing problems, I already know where north is and I wondered if I'd be plagued with a message such as "Recalculating!" in the same tone as my GPS. However, I was gratified to find that the thing was easy to configure, aligned quickly and accurately, and (so far) operates flawlessly.
Also the response to my purchase by B&H was amazingly quick, thorough, and efficient. The firm will have my business hereafter.
