The DKS-18 small black Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack from Vivitar is a triple threat when it comes to buying this type of pack. It can be worn in three different ways and therefore serves as a durable pack for both transport and shooting. It's made from tough Oxford Fabric 600D.

When worn as a traditional backpack, it carries more than its weight in equipment including a 14" (35.6cm) laptop. When worn as a shoulder bag, you have rapid access to your gear through the zippered lower half of the bag. When used as either a left or right sided sling-style bag, the quick access zippered side pockets (on either side) give you even faster access to your equipment. An additional mesh storage pocket is supplied for small accessories.

The bag is essentially divided in half with the top being used for personals and smaller items in their own foam-padded compartment. The lower half is the main compartment where your gear is safely stored within additional foam-padded, adjustable dividers. There's an additional zippered mesh accessory compartment for batteries, media cards, cleaning cloths, pens or even business cards.

Carrying a tripod is no problem since the bag comes with connecting straps on the back that will hold your pod securely. This is a relatively lightweight pack that is functional, durable and flexible for the shooter who likes to be outside and constantly on the move. It's carried by two wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps that are supported by an adjustable chest strap that helps keep the pack steady and centered on your back. The waist belt is also adjustable and helps prevent the pack from swaying while hiking or climbing. There's a comfortable back pad and easily removable and deployable rain cover for when the weather turns sour. Finally, if you're just trying to get the pack out of your car trunk, Vivitar has added a strong top carry handle.

Can be worn as a sling-style bag on either left or right side - accessory pockets on each side provide rapid access to equipment
Multiple versatile storage compartments - top and bottom halves separate personals and photo gear

Accessory mesh side pockets for small items like batteries

I purchased this to use with my Canon DSLR T2i and currently carry that camera with an 18-135 zoom kit lens, a 50 mm prime lens, my 13" macbook pro, and all of the assorted chargers and cords. I have yet to fill it up, but plan to purchase up to 2 additional lenses that I'll also carry in this bag. It is comfortable, easily accessible, and was a fantastic bag for the price.

First off, I like this pack. It's roomy, comfortable most of the time, and well thought out kit locations. But there are some issues. I'll get to those in a moment.

The materials are quite good, and it sits well upright or on it's back which is important to me. once you get the straps set up to your liking it's very comfortable, even when filled up good.

It includes a rainfly, which fits very well, a very thoughtful inclusion, which I use a lot (treat it with some NikWax though ;) and the tripod mounting system works well to medium sized tripods.

The pouches are movable, but I've got more to say on these.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase, but there are some issues for me.

First is the straps. Set up right they are comfortable, but to do this (unless you're 7feet tall that is) you'll likely need to shorten them as far as they can, and if your around 5'6" like me, you'll need to cinsh up the sternum strap fully as well. It's not bad as it sounds, as I said, once figured out it's very comfortable.

The internal dividers are another issue. They can be changed around, but they are too thin for my liking. They wont let your lenses get damaged, but I would go with something with big fluffy dividers next time for a better fit. Not a dealbreaker, but not exactly to my tastes either.

Lastly is the side-access camera area. DSLR bodies are getting smaller every year, and this one will accomodate a 2002 EOS 1D, so if your have a recent smaller bodied DSLR, you will need to move the leftmost divider panel to fit your camera body, or it will move around quite a bit without doing so.

All in all though, great bag. Would I buy it again? probably not, but I'm the picky sort, and love me some big fluffy dividers.

I have not had a chance to go hiking with the pack yet, but I have noticed it is a little tight. My GH4 has a hard time fitting into the camera section. Other than the small camera department, I like the bag. For the money it is a good pack.

        Comments about Vivitar DKS-18 Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack, Small (18 x 11.5 x 8", Black):

This is the perfect size bag to carry around a mid level DSLR with a couple of lenses, a lap top and room for accessories or other items as needed in the top compartment. I absolutely love the size, the layout, how accessible my camera is!

I used this bag for shooting a music festival, and the layout was perfect; quick access to my camera, room for personal affects and not too bulky to carry (I'm a petite 5'1 - so really big bags look & feel awkward on me). I had to zinch the straps almost all the way, and creatively secure the long loose straps with clips - but it worked and was comfortable even after 12+ hours of wear.

But after hard use over two festival weekends, you could definitely see some wear. Especially on the left shoulder strap (the side I used the most for quick access) - the threading has loosened. It's a shame, because this is the exact layout I was looking for in a camera bag. You do get what you pay for in the end.

Pros: easy camera access, great layout, lots of room (Nikon D7100 with 18-140 mm lens attached, 55-300 mm lens, 50 mm lens, 8 mm fisheye lens and still space for one more small to mid level lens!), lots of compartments in other spaces to keep accessories organized, easily fit my 13" MacBook Pro with room to spare (the bag does become incredibly heavy when completely loaded with camera, extra lenses & a laptop - and because it's not the highest quality, made me a bit nervous).

Cons: cheaply made, the dividers securing the lenses are flimsy and move around (I now keep my lenses in their protect bags so they are more secure), the pocket on the inside side flap when you take your camera out should be a zippered pocket instead of Velcro (lost a few things from this pocket - if it was a zipper it would be the perfect size for an iPhone), tight fit with a battery grip attached, not enough zippered pockets in the top compartment (the mesh pockets really don't secure items) and no water bottle holder (ended up clipping a collapsible bottle to the outside of the bag).

In the end, it's a great bag for the price. And for the price, you can't go wrong.

I use this bag almost every other day. So far it has held up to all of the abuse that I have put it through. It is a really great product that is versatile and customizable. Highly recommended for any photographer who carries moderate to small lenses. Another added feature that I really like is that you can put a strap over the lens to secure it. One thing that I did not like about the product is that it is occasionally hard to grab my camera because it gets caught (right before I plan to shoot I do take the lens strap off).

Great looking bag with great features and overall size. However, after about 5 days of use, little threads were starting to come out of random places all around the bag. The mesh pockets easy rip if you put anything more than a couple USB cables in them. Had I not gone to Europe for 2 weeks immediately after I bought this bag, I probably would have returned it within a week for poor construction but I got enough use out of it for what I paid. Getting one of the new Manfrotto sling bags when this finally falls apart completely.

Also, not really a con per se but if you're using a larger camera or a DSLR with a battery pack grip it's a bit difficult to get the camera in and out of the side access pocket.

This bag is well built and very comfortable. There's plenty of room for my nikon dslr, lens filters, extra lenses, GoPro and accessories. There is an additional pocket that folds out to secure the tripod. Fully loaded the bag can be a little heavy but the weight is distributed pretty well and still manages to remain comfortable. Good overall value.

The quality of the bag is very good and the accessibility of the gear inside is great. I am just learning to use my new DSLR camera. I have hiked with my point and shoot for years and will do so with my new camera. I am not ready to pack a lot of gear so I sent the bag back in exchange for something smaller.

Fits my T3i with 4 lenses (18-55, 55-250, nifty 50, and Sigma 18-35) with plenty of room to spare for accessories. I also carry my charger, Sigma dock, various cables, cards, and knick knacks. Still have room to fill this with more. The top compartment is a little smaller than I though, but I still haven't filled it up yet.

It easily holds my budget tripod. One caveat is that the bottom of the tripod mount is a pocket for a foot. So if your tripod doesn't have something to hook onto a small pocket when folded, it won't work. Mine also sticks out above the pack, so if ducking under things, make sure you don't snag it on anything.

The straps are pretty comfortable for a camera bag and extremely adjustable. Maybe too adjustable. The shoulder straps have at least 24" of tail after fitting to me. The chest strap and waist band are also comfortable. I plan on taking this on day hikes, so this is a plus.

The quick access side pocket is great for quickly grabbing the camera. But the fact that the camera sits sideways means it has a tendency to twist under its weight. The foam dividers aren't strong enough on their own to keep from collapsing. Maybe this will change if I pack more things into it to snug it up.

I use this bag to transport my camera, lenses and laptop. As I fly often, this bag is the perfect size to place underneath and airplane seat. It carries everything I need to film as well as an easily accessible compartment for items I need in flight.

Useful pockets and access to equipment, made of durable material , just the right size and price vs the competition , great for 1 body without a grip , but with a mid size tele attached. has space for a few other lenses and accessories and as a rain cover

I ordered this backpack for the easy access sides. It is quite comfortable and protects my gear. It even comes with a raincoat for the bag!
