The DKS-20 medium black Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack from Vivitar is a triple threat when it comes to buying this type of pack. It can be worn in three different ways and therefore serves as a durable pack for both transport and shooting. It's made from tough Oxford Fabric 600D.

When worn as a traditional backpack, it carries more than its weight in equipment including a 15.4" (39.1cm) laptop. When worn as a shoulder bag, you have rapid access to your gear through the zippered lower half of the bag. When used as either a left or right sided sling-style bag, the quick access zippered side pockets (on either side) give you even faster access to your equipment. An additional mesh storage pocket is supplied for small accessories.

The bag is essentially divided in half with the top being used for personals and smaller items in their own foam-padded compartment. The lower half is the main compartment where your gear is safely stored within additional foam-padded, adjustable dividers. There's an additional zippered mesh accessory compartment for batteries, media cards, cleaning cloths, pens or even business cards.

Carrying a tripod is no problem since the bag comes with connecting straps on the back that will hold your pod securely. This is a relatively lightweight pack that is functional, durable and flexible for the shooter who likes to be outside and constantly on the move. It's carried by two wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps that are supported by an adjustable chest strap that helps keep the pack steady and centered on your back. The waist belt is also adjustable and helps prevent the pack from swaying while hiking or climbing. There's a comfortable back pad and easily removable and deployable rain cover for when the weather turns sour. Finally, if you're just trying to get the pack out of your car trunk, Vivitar has added a strong top carry handle.

Can be worn as a sling-style bag on either left or right side - accessory pockets on each side provide rapid access to equipment

I have owned a bunch of camera bags from backpacks to messenger style bags and this one definitely suited what I need it for – bringing my camera and laptop in one comfy bag. The backpack features a roomy compartment above the camera compartment for all your miscellaneous stuff (portable external hd, bamboo medium pen tablet, MBP power adapter, etc). I can fit my Nikon D700 + 70-200 VR outfit with no problem. I was concerned at first that the Medium size won't be enough because the sample images of the bag only showed Canon gear and didn't mention Nikon or Nikkor gear. It's perfect for my everyday use since I usually carry my laptop to work, and my camera + 2 lenses for a random photo walk after the work day. The only gripe (as the other reviews have mentioned) is the lack of a water bottle pocket. Other than that, everything that I'm looking for in an everyday use camera backpack is found in this Vivitar Series 1 backpack. Did I mention, the price for this combo backpack is just amazing???

OK, I have not used it in the field yet. But I am a little disappointed already. The internal dividers are kind of floppy and the Velcro fixation is slack. And I still have not figured out how to arrange everything, so it fits properly my gear (3 lenses and DSLR body). Maybe the fact that as a backpack it holds the camera in a horizontal position, like you see on the illustration, is not a good thing. In real life, the dividers are not able to hold the weight of the body with a lens attached (e.g. 70-300). Well, they hold it, but the stuff sags totally, once you carry the backpack upright, which is what you do with a backpack...And the tripod holder is a joke. It does not cope with my Manfrotto 294 series. But it holds my monopod well...(though, not more). Other than that, it's a nice product. So, I am pondering to get a classic bag instead...

Works great. I especially like the side enterances for easy accessibility. The pack is made a little cheap. The seams arent the greatest, but it's what I expect for the price and will hold up for long often given the price.

Haven't field-tested this pack yet, but I'm happy that it fits my dslr and 70-200mm lens, with room for a few other things. There are tripod straps on the back, but I was able to fit a GorillaPod inside along the side as well. Wouldn't mind more room for non-camera things.

              Comments about Vivitar DKS-20 Photo/SLR/Laptop Sling Backpack, Medium (19 x 11.5 x 8", Black):

I love this backpack! My camera equipment rapidly outgrew my original camera bag, and I thus started looking into backpacks. This backpack is roomy enough to easily contain my DSLR, three lenses (18-55 mm, 70-300 mm, and 100-400 mm), and my GoPro (and accessories) in just the camera portion of the backpack alone. There is an upper pocket with room for personal gear/chargers/etc. The laptop pocket easily holds my ultrabook, and could definitely take a regular size laptop as well.

One can quickly access one's camera through pockets on either side of the backpack, or the back of the pack as well.

There is a tripod foot-holder that allows one to carry a tripod, centered on the outside of the backpack. The pack also includes a rain cover with elastic bands.

My only complaint about this bag is that there are no exterior side pockets that could hold a water bottle for easy access.

This bag has more features that fit what I wanted than some of the $ + ones that I saw. I am sure that it is not as durable material, but it feels sturdy and durable. My 15" macbook pro fits nicely in the laptop sleeve and my 5dmark iii fits snug with a 70-200 f2.8 attached, with room for more lenses. Comes with rain shield which is a plus. It seems like it will be perfect for my photography trip to the UK, lets hope that is true. The only downfall that I can see is that it does not have a water bottle holder. It just makes me nervous to put a drink inside the bag that is holding ALL of my equipment. Other than that it seems like a great bag so far. And you can't beet that price!

I think I spent two hours researching camera backpacks before I finally pulled the trigger on this one. I wanted a backpack to have my hands free when going to on-location shoots and I wanted something with a tripod loop. I finally got shopping fatigue and decided on Vivitar for the price.Things I like:-lots of zippered pockets in the inside compartments-hip and chest straps (hip straps can conveniently tuck up in the pocket at the bottom when you don't need them)-tripod loop (though, admittedly, I wish it was on the side)-wide open pocket when accessing camera/lensesThings I don't like:-Wish top pocket was a little larger-Wish there were more pockets overall and the side one was a little more secure-It's kind of bulky, but I'm already small to begin with and the medium might be slightly larger than I need... but I don't feel like going through the hassle of exchanging it. Better to have slightly more room than I need than slightly too little room.I haven't taken it into the field yet (shoot got postponed after buying it, naturally) but for now I'm happy. Maybe someday I'll be making the big bucks and can afford something pretty like the National Geographic bags, but for now I think this'll get the job done.

I'm going to be traveling a lot this summer and taking a sample trip this weekend. I've had this bag for about 1 month and it's perfect for what I need. The tripod harness is great as well :D. If you're looking for a bag and not sure what to get, I'd absolutely go for the DKS-20 again. I'm a big fan of all the extra and hidden features it comes with.

I am rating this based off of the fact that I am an amateurs photographers that does landscape photography when I travel/hike/explore. People who think their backpack may take a beating; buy at your own risk.

With that being said, I wanted the ability to do a sling backpack but also set it back to a regular backpack and it does the job. The straps seem quite durable and it has metal clips rather than plastic, makes me feel safer when switching up the way I wear the backpack.

There's quite a lot of big compartments/pockets but not many little ones for remotes and memory cards. The padding on the inside is not as soft and thick as my previous one but for the price, can't really ask for more. There's a medium size tripod holder and a dolly pocket to put it on your luggage. I feel spoiled and I'm using all these new functions the next time I'm traveling.

If you're looking for a camera bag that can hold bodies, lenses, accessories, and a computer, then look no further. This bag does a great job at those things, and is extremely inexpensive. I will say that one of my zipper taps already broke off, but I'll blame that on myself, not sure if it was my fault or not. Either way, it's a great price for a bag that does a good job.

Yes this item held it's share. On the downside it only lasted two days. I ordered this for a big trip. Given it was around $[$]us. The right strap ripped within the first two days of my trip. I had to triple stitch it back together to manage the rest. I'm not sure about you but I do not have the time to sew when i'm on the road. The fact I am still afraid my own stitches will tear should give you a good idea of the quality with this bag. Africa is not the place you want to have faulty equipment. Next time I will pay the extra $100 for the quality required to travel the world. Thank you for your time.

This bag is great for those looking for on the road compact and lightweight solutions for camera gear, 15inch laptop and accessories.

The compartments within are completely customizable. With access from both sides to the main compartment you are able to easily access an SLR with an attached lens.

The main dividers can also be completely removed, including the one separating the top section from the bottom section. When I'm not using this bag for camera gear I continually use it for regular commuting to and from work placing various things in the compartments such as shoes, food and other accessories.

The side pocket is great for storing keys, earbuds and other small items. There are numerous net pockets with zippers inside that offer secure storage of loose items. The bag itself is water resistant but not waterproof without the protective shield it comes with. During a rain storm leakage did occur into the inner compartments because I was not utilizing the shield.

The waist and chest straps are extremely useful when hiking or biking to support added weight. They also fold nicely into the bag when not in use. Love the exterior tripod strap as well.

                                Great bag, highly recommended.

I looked around for a bag that would be perfect during traveling with my camera gear and my laptop/netbook. I have a smaller DSLR (Canon T3) with two lenses, so I do not have a ton of gear. However, I really like all the extra room this bag has for the little stuff I collect in my travels. The opening for the laptop will hold either my laptop or my netbook with a few magazines. The top pocket has room for all sorts of items. And it is very comfortable on my back when loaded. It should be good as I get a flash and another lens.
