Product Highlights
  • Supercardioid Polar Pattern

The MKH 416 transformerless, RF condenser is designed as a combination of pressure gradient and interference tube microphones. Very good feedback rejection, low proximity effect, 130 dB/SPL. Rugged and resistant to changing climate conditions. Ideal for boom, fishpole, and camera mounting.

Its excellent directivity and compact design, high consonant articulation and feedback rejection make the MKH 416 a superb all-around microphone for film, radio and television, especially for outside broadcast applications.

Interference Tube Principle
Pressure gradient receiver with short interference tube
Employs RF-technology to control residual microphone noise. Optimizing the transducer's acoustic impedance results in a further improvement in low noise performance.
The RF-design yields exceptionally low noise levels and is virtually immune to humidity and moisture.
The comparatively low RF-voltage across the elements of the transducer also eliminates arcing and DC-bias creeping currents.
Hypercardioid at low and medium frequency, above 2kHz approaches lobar pattern
Very low inherent self-noise
High sensitivity
Transformerless and fully floating balanced output
Rugged, suitable for adverse climatic conditions
Matt black all-metal body
Increased directivity
Optimum S/N ratio
Lower gain on input channels required
Lowest noise and greatest signal stability
Highly immune to humidity in all conditions. Extremely stable.
Visually "low key"

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

We typically use a Lav mic for interviews, mainly because you can set it and forget it. If the subject moves around, great, just don't hit the mic. The sound quality is great. THEN, I bought this mic. We now use a boom stand or if the subject is moving, a boom pole. The tones are rich and true. Deep bass, clean highs and the mids are exactly where they should be. We plug this directly into an FS700. I know a PreMixer is optimal and maybe someday soon we'll step it up. The direction on this mic, if you're not used to a true shotgun mic, as I wasn't, is very narrow. You have to aim the mic in the exact direction of the voice source. Over the head or off to the side and you'll notice fair to poor quality. Hit the mouth, throat or chest region and it sounds simply amazing. We've used this indoors about a dozen times now and the quality was awesome, but just a little better than the lav mics we were using. Today we shot outside and it was windy. Cars whipping by in the background and ambient noise of lawnmowers, etc.. not a great scenario. The result was jaw dropping, as we properly positioned the shotgun, everything was pushed WAY back on the audio track and the voice came thru clean and rich. This was all with the stock windscreen that came with the mic. I know it'll sound even better with a dead cat.Strongly recommend this mic, it's built strong, has a flawless history and once you get used to positioning it, delivers the same sound you hear in TV shows and movies. I can't wait to see what it can do once I get a mixer.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

I use my 416 for Run and Gun, Studio, Interviews, TV. I have never found a reason to go to another mic unless I needed more than one mic; then I usually reach for another 416.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

I use the mic primarily for booming outdoors on Indy and student films. I was using the Rode short boom, but was not happy with the off axis noise rejection. I also thought I could do better on the overall sound quality. The Sennheiser has really delivered on both counts. It sounds great. I have not experienced any negatives. The cost is the cost: you get what you pay for.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

Great mic for the price but, with a few short commings. This mic more than any other I know of has the unique ability to make the subject sound closer than they are. This is partially accomplished by a 'rising' frequency response. While the sound of the mic is excellent, this response also results in undue sibilance in some vocals. Anther peculiarity is the unevenness of side pickup. So end result, you really need to be "on axis" to get the proper sound.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

As a videographer with 35+ years experience, I've tried just about every mic designed for professional boom operation, from the Neumann 82i to the Audio-Technica AT-897. For overall sound quality, dependability, affordability and service you just can't beat the MKH-416. The hyper-cardioid pattern is narrow but not too narrow. The noise is virtually non-existent. If you can only buy one mic for boom work, this should be it.

produces crystal clear sound. I use this mic for independent film and video. this microphone has never let me down. I used this in the Pittsburgh 48hr film festival last year and we won the award for best sound design. I run this mic into a Wendt X3 mixer and they make a fantastic combination. Highly recommended microphone.

I instantly recorded as much as I could when I got this. It's my first real shotgun after having a Rode NTG-2. No noise going through to my Zoom H6 either. I'm in love! Be careful about the size however. You need a small enough shock mount to work with this. I just adjusted mine with gaff tape and it works fine but don't be cheap like me!

Its either this or a U-87 for voice over recordings. And the 416 is a lot more forgiving.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

When I read that this Mic had the "film sound" I took it with a grain of salt, but after firing it up and using it on a dozen shoots, I can report that that is in fact the case. The sound is remarkably clear, and the mic requires terribly little babysitting. It even sounds awesome hooked up to a cheap zoom. I can't recommend it enough. I just want one more of these. The included wind screen isn't enough for adverse weather conditions, but under normal circumstances it's more than sufficient.

The other reviews are going to say everything you need to know, I'll just reiterate some of those points to make it extra clear that this is a great product. Sound is good all the time. Can sound great if you put effort into a proper audio environment. It's light. It has very little noise of its own. It's directional enough to make a significant difference but not the most directional mic. If you plan to own one microphone only, this is a great buy and your best bet.

I already had the ME67. I bought the 416 mic because I am looking for the most directional mic I can find to eliminate background noise. This mic is great, but to my ears no different than the ME67. The tonal quality was not exact, but similar to me as well. Definitely not $500 better.

I've been involved in music and film for close to 20 years. I'm not saying I have the best ears and am an authority, but again, if it's between those two mics, I'd go with the ME67 and save $500.

Comments about Sennheiser MKH-416 - Short Shotgun Interference Tube Mic:

I frequently add voiceovers to my videos, and the shotgun mic I was using, just didn't sound good. The Sennheiser MKH416 has a great voice response, and makes my voiceovers sound crisp and clean. I was recommended this mic by a friend who is a sound recordist in the TV/movie industry.
