Comments about Toshiba Satellite L735-S3220 13.3" Notebook Computer (Matrix Graphite):
After my five-year old 15' Toshiba Qosmio went into the fritz I went to B&H's NYC store to sample their newest Blu-ray compatible laptops (BD on board is a must). I test-drove various notebooks including the S3320 (even brought a BD movie to see if it would load-up or if needed to buy playback software) and then ordered it over the phone. Had it since the 21st and so far I'm pleased as peach even though I still miss some features from my ol' '07 Qosmio model (as in 'the S3220 built-speakers are worthless, get some headphones pronto'). I have very basic needs: some multimedia apps (for my small business, Skyping with relatives overseas, etc.), lightweight enough to carry w/o hurting (my previous Qosmio was almost 7 lbs.!), with Blu-ray on board (for road trips or lazy afternoons at work), a decent-enough battery (the ol' Qosmio barely lasted a little over an hour) and the latest processor (2nd gen Core 5) so I don't have to worry about being outdated before year's end. So far so good with the S3330 (the battery lasted a little over four hours when watching back-to-back BD movies), although to be honest I'm not really pushing it as hard as I could or have customized it much outside of the out-of-the-box settings (i.e. deleted the bloatware). I used it for back-to-back 90 min. Skype sessions plus lots of after-hours web browsing last weekend, and except for the laptop's right corner (where the heat vent disperses MASSIVE amounts of hot air) the unit itself was cool. If you want to know how this laptop performs when pushed to the max (or games) you'll need someone else's opinion. For average use (few hours a day of web surfing, Blu-ray viewing, invoice typing, Mom Skyping, etc.) this one does the trick at under $800.One not-so-small caveat though is the reflective screen. It's no better or worse than most budget laptop LED screens (OK but not as 'poppy' as an ASUS or Mac screen) but the perfect viewing angle is either eluding me completely or at this small a size (never had a laptop below 15' before) it don't have one. Even in a dark room with the lights out and me moving (and/or positioning the screen in a dozen different positions) I was never able to achieve a 100% satisfying, perfect-view angle. I noticed this at the B&H showroom with their S3220 model and it didn't bother me (other 13' laptops I was looking at didn't have leap-out gorgeous screens either) but, at the office or at home, it's a small-but-consistent nuisance that is worth reducing the rating by a full star for.
