This is my first external flash, so I am not the 'expert' in capabilities and uses of flash. I bought it to go with my Fujifilm HS20 EXR and this is one of two available flashes for that camera. I am happy that I bought this flash because it dramatically improves the low-light performance of the camera.Let me start with the flash itself. It has an LCD panel and four controls OFF/ON, TEST, MODE and SEL. using the MODE button is the way to navigate the functions and SEL is how you select within each mode. I suggest you consult the manual for enhanced detail before you use this flash with your Fujifilm Camera. TTL settings are 35mm and DIGITAL. They had little effect on behavior in my use of the flash. ZOOM mode settings are varied and have the most effect on the camera/flash interaction, in my view. There is an 'AUTO' setting wherein the flash tracks the zoom values of the HS20 and a manual mode wherein you can set the lighting to approximate the zoom setting. There are two exposure modes, '+' and '-' wherein you can increase/decrease the 'exposure level' generated by the flash. The manual settings on the flash are independent of the camera settings, as far as I experienced. Pulling out the diffuser in front of the flash causes the [WP] indicator to display in the center of the LCD panel and it changes the behavior of the flash. In my experience, it lowers the flash level considerably. I'll have to practice with it more extensively before commenting further. There is no true, documented description of the interaction of this flash with my HS20 EXR and behavior must be discovered through trial and effort. In most of the HS20's operating modes, the flash tracks the cameras focal length from 24mm to 105mm and flashes appropriately. In the camers's manual mode, the flash does not always flash brightly enough to illuminate more than the central area of the picture. if that is the desired effect then take note and practice. In AUTO and EXR modes, the camera behaves more consistently and with better illumination. It still tracks focal length, to a degree, but certainly produces more light and more importantly, better distribution on light. But there are some drawbacks. the AF-assist light does not work for this camera. I tried several modes, including EXR modes, AUTO and Manual. The AF-assist light never worked. There are no camera settings that make it work. In fact, if the camera detects the flash, it automatically sets itself to EXTERNAL flash mode. additionally, red-eye settings do not work and are unsettable on the camera when the flash is attached. as per my reading, this is a re-fit of the Sunpak PZ42x, which means little to me. Considering Fujifilm contracted this flash, I would have loved to see better interaction between the features of the camera and the capabilities of the flash. I have read that this flash also works with several other Fujifilm cameras. I wonder if they also suffer from the same drawbacks or have differing flaws, depending on the model. My best initial results came with the camera mode set to AUTO. I give this one three stars because it does have benefits and definitely improves my results with the Fujifilm HS20 EXR. It simply does not stand out as exceptionally featured or especially functional. Warning: be sure to turn the flash off manually because it will wake up occasionally even though it will automatically shut off after 5 minutes or so of non-use. I use Sanyo Eneloops and they last a very long time.

Comments about EF42 Shoe Mount Flash for FUJIFILM Cameras:
I purchased the HS 30 fugi camera about 3 months ago and have benn very pleased with the results. However, after noticing the limited capability of the on board flash it was time to upgrade to the EF 42 shoe mount. It truely is the missing link to this camera, it allows me to take so much better flash pictures. I went to a wedding recently and was able to capture large groups with no trouble. It also allows me to bounce the flash and be more creative, sometimes direct flash is too harsh. The EF 42 flash is lightweight and uses easily accessible AA batteries and gives a good amount of flashes per set. Do yourself a favor and get one, you won't be sorry and your pictures will be the talk of the town. Fugi always a great product.

I purchased the EF42 to compliment my Fugi HS30. This is definitely the missing link. I have a dslr but it's a pain in the neck literally to carry all that equipment around all day long especially in the amusement parks of florida. The flash lets you take some great pictures once the sun goes down. It has enough power to really get out there and runs on AA batteries. You really do need this to complete the outfit. It takes great group shots when you just don't have enough flash on the camera. A must for those family weddings. The price is really reasonable too. Fugi does make a nice product for those times when you just don't feel like dragging all your stuff around. Keep up the good work.

Comments about EF42 Shoe Mount Flash for FUJIFILM Cameras:
As a matter of background information, most of you may know that the Fuji EF-42 is actually a rebadged (and TTL dedicated for Fuji) Sunpak 42 version. I happen to have both and I must say that this Fuji version "bests" the Sunpak version in both power and versatility - now go figure.
Using this EF-42 on the likes of the X-10 can work wonders with indoor flash photography, in particular, the bounce type (which I mostly use).
In addition, this Fuji flash comes well packaged with a nice manual. It does not resemble the typical cheap "Chinese made" units that you often see on the market.
When conducting indoor flash photography, I need a powerful flash because as I mentioned above, I tend to use bounce flash techniques whenever possible. This particular Fuji flash unit is much more powerful than its size would indicate. As a result, I've been able to achieve superbly balanced (and powered) indoor flash results in a variety of conditions.
I highly recommend this flash and let's face it, Fuji used to be able to use Nikon dedicated units (for Fuji DSLR's, that is) - and for all other Fuji enthusiast models (that they used to make), you could only use a manual flash unit because nothing was dedicated (not even the hot shoe).
So it's nice to see that Fuji has decided to finally adopt a TTL unit for its own needs. I highly recommend this unit!

Comments about EF42 Shoe Mount Flash for FUJIFILM Cameras:
The flash operates very well with the fuji x10 which allowed me to shoot a wedding with lots of indoor distance shots that wouldn't have been impossible with a weaker flash.
The online manual,on the other hand, is pathetic.
It would be great if the flash head was removable from the sensor for the price point of the unit.
With the exception of the manual, I am very well pleased with the unit.

This flash has been used for corporate conference photography work, and it has surpassed expectations. For the price, this flash performance is fantastic, with great battery life, varied flash levels at your finger for different situations, and an easy to use digital menu onboard.
The only weakness is the battery door, but it doesn't really get noticed after battery insertion.

So far, this flash has yet to disappoint. The metering works well, as good as anything from Canon or Nikon. Its just as bright as their lower end flashes too. Its smaller, lighter, and easy to use. Button placement is a bit dated, but it works. Plastic mount is a bit of a downer, but it too works well. I gave it 4 stars because at the moment I cannot figure out why light is spilling from the flash when I bounce it.

This came with the special issue X100 but does not necessarily mate well with it. As the X100 has excellent low light performance and low noise levels the need is little for such a powerful torch. However the unit is very powerful and has an enormous reach. I have not used it much but find it difficult to get the low level fill I wish for. It is light but it is bigger than the camera itself which defeats the purpose of the X100 and main attraction.
In the context of X100 it is an overkill but I know the attraction of having that kind of power for photojournalism and possibly landscape photography and will pursue that line of thinking in the future.

I don't typically use shoe mount units commercially but felt I should have one for the Fuji X-Pro1 kit I'm currently working with. After looking at Metz, Sunpak and others I went for the Fuji unit and have no regrets. It works as it should, very simple controls, and accurate exposures. I'll be looking for an off camera cord for those times I need one.

I researched quite long and hard for a high powered flash for my Fujifilm HS30 camera.Guide numbers etc were hard to compare due to manufacturers stating numbers in feet or inches and at different focal lengths.Throughout my research this model kept comparing quite highly and including compatible TTL (Through The Lens Metering). In the end I bit the bullet and bought one from B&H Photo,Video and Pro Audio.I saved over [$] buying this at B&H Photo,Video and Pro Audio versus purchasing locally here in Australia (Tend to want too much proffit over here I think)The Flash arrived very quickly and is absolutely awsome.I wanted to really increas the range at which I could take flash photos at and this does just that. The built in flash is good for about 7 or 8 feet indoors , this one stretches to about 140 feet and with TTL on theres no calculating ,just point and shoot.Theres Manual mode also and the head rotates just about anywhere for bounce flash. It adjusts the strength of flash and zooms for long range all in auto and manual modes. My Photography has improved tremendously using this .Even outdoors during the day has seen great improvement reducing shadow areas in my pics.I highly recommend one of these. The only negative with this is the amount of photos that I now have on my computer :)
