I just received my Fuji EF-42 flash unit, and I have some random thoughts to share, in case anyone else is interested in it. First, some background: I have a lot of flash units, ranging from a dozen or so speedlights to various monolights to big studio pack and head systems. At work I tend to light a lot of different assignments, so working with on- and off-camera flash is something I do pretty much every day.

When I got the Fuji X system, I decided that the high-ISO capabilities were so good that I would not buy a flash to go with it. No need. And anyway I can always stick a Canon speedlight up there and use it on manual, right? Yeah, ok, so I've shot a couple of things recently where I could really have used a flash, and a TTL flash is just so much easier to use on-camera. So I ordered this one.

The EF-42 is about the same size as a Canon 430 EX II. It takes 4 AA batteries and has a guide number in the same range as any other 4-AA speedlight. Not wildly powerful, but not bad. The control interface is very simple -- an on/off switch, a charge lamp/test button, and two control buttons: Mode, and Select. The head is fully articulated and can be turned it almost any direction; there is no interlock on this movement.

Output can be varied with Exposure Compensation, 1.5 stops in either direction. Manual control is possible, too, from full to 1/64 power in full stops. The control interface is kludgy -- scroll through every setting using the MODE button until you reach the setting you want to change, then use the SEL button to change that setting, then wait several seconds for the unit to reset.

With fully charged NiMH batteries, recycle times were about twice as long as a Canon 430 II flash unit.

Performance: OK, this is what counts, right? TTL exposures seem very good, especially for bounced flash. The camera gives me perfect fill-flash from the EF42, and maintained the perfect overall exposure and color balance. Surprisingly, I can use this with my usual full-auto settings on my X Pro 1 and XE-1 cameras, including auto-ISO and auto white balance, and the camera and flash work very well together on the final exposure.

Overall impressions: Not bad. Construction and user interface aren't the same as the Canon speedlights. The size is just about right for an X Pro 1 -- it's large, but not overwhelming. It might be too large on an X100S, though. If one needs a fully capable TTL flash for the X series, this is probably the best choice.

This is my first external flash, so I am not the 'expert' in capabilities and uses of flash. I bought it to go with my Fujifilm HS20 EXR and this is one of two available flashes for that camera. I am happy that I bought this flash because it dramatically improves the low-light performance of the camera.Let me start with the flash itself. It has an LCD panel and four controls OFF/ON, TEST, MODE and SEL. using the MODE button is the way to navigate the functions and SEL is how you select within each mode. I suggest you consult the manual for enhanced detail before you use this flash with your Fujifilm Camera. TTL settings are 35mm and DIGITAL. They had little effect on behavior in my use of the flash. ZOOM mode settings are varied and have the most effect on the camera/flash interaction, in my view. There is an 'AUTO' setting wherein the flash tracks the zoom values of the HS20 and a manual mode wherein you can set the lighting to approximate the zoom setting. There are two exposure modes, '+' and '-' wherein you can increase/decrease the 'exposure level' generated by the flash. The manual settings on the flash are independent of the camera settings, as far as I experienced. Pulling out the diffuser in front of the flash causes the [WP] indicator to display in the center of the LCD panel and it changes the behavior of the flash. In my experience, it lowers the flash level considerably. I'll have to practice with it more extensively before commenting further. There is no true, documented description of the interaction of this flash with my HS20 EXR and behavior must be discovered through trial and effort. In most of the HS20's operating modes, the flash tracks the cameras focal length from 24mm to 105mm and flashes appropriately. In the camers's manual mode, the flash does not always flash brightly enough to illuminate more than the central area of the picture. if that is the desired effect then take note and practice. In AUTO and EXR modes, the camera behaves more consistently and with better illumination. It still tracks focal length, to a degree, but certainly produces more light and more importantly, better distribution on light. But there are some drawbacks. the AF-assist light does not work for this camera. I tried several modes, including EXR modes, AUTO and Manual. The AF-assist light never worked. There are no camera settings that make it work. In fact, if the camera detects the flash, it automatically sets itself to EXTERNAL flash mode. additionally, red-eye settings do not work and are unsettable on the camera when the flash is attached. as per my reading, this is a re-fit of the Sunpak PZ42x, which means little to me. Considering Fujifilm contracted this flash, I would have loved to see better interaction between the features of the camera and the capabilities of the flash. I have read that this flash also works with several other Fujifilm cameras. I wonder if they also suffer from the same drawbacks or have differing flaws, depending on the model. My best initial results came with the camera mode set to AUTO. I give this one three stars because it does have benefits and definitely improves my results with the Fujifilm HS20 EXR. It simply does not stand out as exceptionally featured or especially functional. Warning: be sure to turn the flash off manually because it will wake up occasionally even though it will automatically shut off after 5 minutes or so of non-use. I use Sanyo Eneloops and they last a very long time.

      Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

This flash does what it's supposed to. Only reason for 4 stars is because of the slight lack of sensitivity when it comes to the automatic / digital mode. Seems to me that the camera (X-T1) should communicate the slight differences and give a better lit final product. I seem to get more pictures that look like I used either a point & shoot or a cheaper flash. I've used both Nikon and Canon for my 35 year photographer career so I know what it is I'm talking about and what I see as lacking. HOWEVER - using this in manual mode (for me) works GREAT! Can pretty much illuminate a :ARGE area with no problems at all/

        Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

I bought this, because the built-in flash with my Fujifilm X-E2 is tiny and not adequate for what I need. This flash is almost as big as the X-E2 camera! Although there may be other, similar and less expensive units on the market, I chose the brand, because I wanted total compatibility with TTL flash, plug-and-play. The head can turn from side to side and from horizontal to vertical.I have had no problems using it with the XF18-55 lens, using bounce flash indoors or as fill-in light outdoors. It uses 4 AA size batteries, so that is not an issue. Recycling is fast enough for my use, but it is not as fast as a studio strobe system. For close-ups with the XF60 macro, I found it useful to place a white paper towel over the flash, held with a rubber band, to diffuse and to reduce the light on the subject., thereby reducing hard lighting and dark shadows. I shall continue to use this for close-ups until Fuji comes up with a twin light set-up like the Canon MT-24 EX on Canon MP-e65mm f/2.8 1X-5X special macro lens. When I need that system, I can use an inexpensive lens adapter, or my Canon 5D system.

Not so impressed with this unit. Worked ok at the start of the party, but started to act strange after 40 captures or so. Changed out the batteries but no improvement, flash would not sync, and I'm certain that wasn't due to slow recycle. It could use a more accurate ready light. It's no Canon Speedlight. I'll probably keep it though. It's better than nothing.I used it with my Fujifilm X-T1.It also would be nice if it had a high voltage connector on the unit. At least it would recycle faster.

          Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

As I have the Fuji XM1 mostly for personal family use and travel, this flash is useful when using the kit lens that came with the camera (not the same kit lens as other models) when light is very dim indoors. Fuji has some primes which I do not have yet, so adding this flash, lets me keep the iso lower and f-stop available on the kits lens without having to go to 3200 or 6400 iso in low light. 3200 iso can be impressive on the XM1 however, I do not always want to go there. This flash can be bounced to ceilings indoors for even lighting, and going back to 640 or 800 iso in a large room instead of having to go 3200 iso or higher and fills shadows with nice lighting in bounce mode, for very fine detail capture and better contrast and fill. Recommended when you really need that extra fill light. Keeping the camera compact, I store the flash along in the bag, and use only when I really need it. Next, which prime to get, I have to decide.

This Fuji flash is good for general photography. While I have 3 Nikon flashes, I did not always want to have to use triggers and use those flashes off camera with my new FUJI XE-2. Example: when we are at a party/social gathering! Do get TTL and that is what I was looking for. The flash takes a lot of time to recycle between shots (even with fresh, best batteries).

Solid little TTL speed light. Does what it says it does. Easy to read LCD controls for full auto TTL with plus and minus EV stops, and full manual control. Good out to forty ft. plus. I especially like the ability of this flash to pan from left to right and the multiple head angles. Makes for versatility for bounce situations.

I use this flash on camera currently but plan to use it and possibly another one for off-camera and remote slave applications for portraiture.

Good bang for the price. Only request I have would be an AC adaptor. Decent build quality. It's not a tank but then again, tanks cost much more. I'd give it a thumbs up recommendation. Oh yeah, this unit has a very quick recycle time.

At this point if you want fully-functional flash for Fuji with TTL this is your only choice. It works as advertised, of course there is not High Speed Sync with Fuji X system, unless you use it with X100/100s where the Flash Xsync is high. I knocked one star off because this is the only flash I have purchased in a long time that DID NOT come with a foot.

Works, and works well. Wish it was a tad more powerrful, but really haven't run into much of an issue yet. Would like to see a built in bounce card.

                        Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

My wife has not really had a chance to use it to any extent but it appears to be well made, light weight and very functional, not too complicated and has many settings you can use if you want to. Wish it would have come with a protective case like my Canon flash did.The flash is used mainly for vacation photography in churches, museums and etc

                        Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

Let me start by saying that I'm normally a Canon shooter and am used to their high quality speed lights. I got this light to complement my new Fuji x-t1 walk around camera.

Its a great, no bells, no whistles flash. It has TTL but not a lot more. It's controls are very basic but also easy to use. The housing feels a little flimsy compared to a Canon or Nikon but at 1/2 - 1/3 of the price it is good enough for me. It'll take some knocks into the wall but don't drop it.

If you have a fuji or just want an extra manual flash for use with RF triggers, this is a great choice.

                        Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

I have 3 of these flashes. One of them broke after a few months of low use. Fuji sent me a new one.

The flash does the job. But the way I configure my Fuji the flash wont fire. I've lost a few shots that way. By the time I reprogram everything the photo op is gone.

                          Comments about Fujifilm EF-42 Flash:

This flash performs well. It is powerful, fast to recharge, easy to use and works well in automatic mode. The price is low compared to that of other major camera manufactures. The only negative is that the display is a bit hard to read.

Small, powerfull, TTL works great on my Fuji cameras. Build is ok for the price, not as sturdy as other manufacturers.

Not as solidly built or as technically sophisticated as my Nikon speed lights were, but MUCH less expensive than they were. No wireless TTL but I'm using a relatively inexpensive 3rd party flash cable for off-camera TTL, and it seems to work fine. I'm confident this will meet my needs for those occasions when I want to add some light.
