The USB Cassette to MP3 Converter from GGI connects to your computer to create MP3 files out of cassettes, allowing you to dust off that box of tapes and revitalize your collection. All those great – yet outmoded and linear – Prince albums, Grateful Dead bootlegs, and ninth-grade mix tapes will find new life on your iPod, computer, or car stereo. Transfer the old classics to the current medium so you can load them on any device and share them with friends.

The plug-and-play USB Cassette to MP3 Converter comes with Windows software that walks you through the conversion process. There you can select the bit rate of the MP3 files you're creating.

Sporting the familiar shape of a portable cassette player, the USB Cassette to MP3 Converter includes all the standard playback-control buttons of a classic Walkman as well as a volume-control dial. There's a standard 3.5mm jack for your headphones and a slot for batteries in case you want to take those tapes out on a jog before you get around to converting them. Or just power the device via USB.

Note: Headphones and batteries not included.

Thanks for this opportunity to share my experience. This thing performs very easily, and I actually made a recording of a cassette the first try. However, not being familiar with Audacity, I failed to go any further with it. I was testing and trying to figure out the icons. After a few recordings, I soon learned what had to be done when a friend prompted me with a couple of basics.

I have done four CD's that play wonderfully in my Bose stereo car unit. I got this to preserve some of my own material from cassette and make some editions to play on the modern CD equipment.

It is as one reviewer said, built of plastic, but if handled carefully will perform quite well. I actually dropped it on the floor (accidently) but it survived to work great.

Why four stars? For me, it was the motor audio tone (+/- 800 Hz never measured) that was getting into the audio during times that it should have been quiet. I admit trying to correct the problem, but I could not get it apart. I got as far as peeking inside, but I was breaking tiny sections of plastic so I gave up. I thought that the motor should have a capacitor across the power wires. If it already does, then it could be the wrong value, or the motor buzz is inductively coupled by the play heads.

Tape play "wow" was within levels satisfying to me. The only thing I can suggest is to keep the waveform "tight" between songs using the audacity editing. I preferred as a beginner, to play the music back, stop playback at the songs conclusion, use the "I" edit bar, and place it just in front of the next song. Then, I would drag it back (highlight) to the time of the sound end of the previous selection. Then, I would press "delete" on the computer keyboard. My time lapse between songs was usually less than one second. If you keep the edit "tight", you will barely notice the motor buzz or tone.

I guess that just about covers my experience with this product. Upon checking, I did not export digital as MP3, I used MWAV (windows files). Maybe later.

I bought this product to play cassettes and also to transfer them to my computer. Right out of the box I was struck by how flimsy this product is. I used their batteries, and a number of new batteries, and at best it would rewind/fast forward *very slowly* and pressing PLAY did nothing or played super slowly. The battery compartment is INSIDE the tape player (i.e. you have to remove the tape to put the batteries in) and the whole thing felt like it was so poorly made. I returned it and bought a regular walkman-style player elsewhere. With a 3.5mm male-to-male cable (which you can buy for about $5) and Audacity (free s/w) I record my tapes to my mac easily. You don't need a special tape player (and definitely not THIS one!) This product is much cheaper than others like it -- there's a reason for that. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone.

Comments about GGI USB Cassette to MP3 Converter:

As usual these days, the enclosed hard copy instructions are of very little use. Ditto for the CD which provides a downloaded interface with the cassette player. Forget the CD. Its download doesn't work. Go immediately to the Audacity website and download the newest version of the interface which immediately recognizes the player and allows you to transfer your cassettes to .wav or Mp3 with little or no trouble at all. Since I have very little experience with audio engineering, I'm sure that I am (currently) unable to take full advantage of the capabilities of this nifty little program, as there seem to be many that I do not understand. That did not, however, deter me from easily and quickly downloading my precious cassette memories onto my computer. There are, no doubt, better, more professional setups, but for the novice, and especially for the price, I highly recommend this gadget.

Comments about GGI USB Cassette to MP3 Converter:

Buying this machine was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Through the use of this device, I was able to transfer all the tapes my later father recorded of my brother and me singing along to Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Perry Como at various Christmases in my childhood. On those tapes, my father says, "This tape will be listened to forever." He passed away 11 years ago in a car accident, but thanks to this tape converter, his promise still stands. I made CDs and MP3s for my mother and brother this Christmas and received a gift myself in the process--the realization that all of my father's favorite songs he used to sing, songs I thought I'd never hear again, can be accessed via my computer or CD player any time I want to. Forever.

Comments about GGI USB Cassette to MP3 Converter:

I plugged the cassette player into an iMac and was recording using GarageBand in 5 minutes. No extra setup needed. Unit worked flawlessly. Cassette looped (auto-reversed) per the setting on the case so recording was un-interupted for the entire lenght of the 90 minute tape.I recorded to a full-format file (not-mp3) for full fidelity with no problems. This is a $ solution to convert cassettes to digital format. My cassette was of a relatively low quaility to begin with so I can't say this is a 'high-fidelity' solutioon but it is afterall--a $ unit.

Just wanted to move some cassettes to my i-Tunes. Instructions talk about Audacity application but not where or how to use it. It ends up tbat all I needed was the cable from their cheap plastic cassette walkman and it worked, but only after wasting 2 hours trying to translate their instructions into "human". Very frustrating and it shouldn't be sold - especially since there is no website to contact for help. ALSO a noisy transfer.

Once I figured out how to use it the product functioned great. Initially could not get it to work because instruction book is so small and wrong--had to use magnifying glass and could barely read input but I don't think it was right. Fooled around and found correct input source and then it worked well. Has a bunch of other nice editing features such as clipping but no instructions as to how to use them.

When plugging the device into a computer, the USB drivers fail to load and it won't get recognized by the Audacity software, or the operating system. The tape player works fine and is quite audible with a headset. I simply can't use it for its intended purpose of recording to mp3. I would have to do it "over the air" which I could have done with any tape player. This was a waste of money.

Works great to transfer cassettes to MP3. Came with Audacity which has worked well to save and work with files. One thing that could improve this would be to run audio through a sound board to improve the depth of the audio while recording. Auto reverse on this will let you record both sides without intervention.....but set a timer if you walk away or you will have multiple copies! LOL. Connects with a USB cable, therefore, no batteries necessary. Ear phones included. Would recommend this to a friend.

I am a professional photographer and videographer. I used this for a client who asked me to convert a cassette recording of her wedding from 1971. It was very easy to use and the tape was not at all damaged (a concern of hers considering the age of the tape). My only complaint: it requires a specific software to edit the recording. And the disc it came with was not compatible with my mac. I had to find a website from which to download the software. But once that was done, it was smooth sailing. I was very pleased with how affordable the product was and how easy it was to use. I recommend this, especially for those working with a limited budget.

Hi. This product, which works if used correctly, leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to user friendly instructions, and I am a technology specialist. I did not like the software which came with the device, however, once I figured it out, it worked and I do recommend the product.

Comments about GGI USB Cassette to MP3 Converter:

I have now recorded 18 cassettes to MP3 and then to CD using the USB connection and all has gone well. The online video tutorial helped a lot as audacity is a complex program. Having fun adjusting the recordings using the tools in audacity. I generally need to increase the bass a bit for the recording to sound really good. All in all, I'm satisfied with my purchase.
