The rear panel features a stereo RCA input for wide compatibility with both consumer and professional devices. The front panel offers a 3.5mm aux input for connecting an MP3 player or CD player. OptImage III waveguides on the front baffles help to improve detail and clarity, as well as provide an accurate stereo image. A 3.5mm headphone jack offers private monitoring, while the front-panel volume control lets you make convenient adjustments. The speakers are magnetically shielded for use near video monitors.

A few years ago, I purchased several M-Audio AV-40 speakers for a school that I was working at, for use by the music teachers. The sound was incredible, and despite their small size, they easily filled an entire classroom with beautiful, smooth, accurate, and distortion free music. And best of all: no real need for a subwoofer.
I wanted a pair for myself, and even thought of using them in a satellite/subwoofer arrangement for my home stereo system. But I had other priorities at the time, and put the AV-40 ideas on the back burner, waiting for a more opportune time.
Fast forward to the present day: I'm now learning to edit HD video, and wanted a set of monitors that I could use for that purpose. The speakers on my iMac were OK, but I really wanted something better. Since I'm just a video hobbiest, I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but wanted good quality. Remembering my very good experience with the AV-40's, I decided to give the smaller AV-30's a try. The speakers sit only a mere 24" inches away on my desk, and because of that, along with very limited desk space, I thought the AV-40's would be over-kill.
Well, I'm very glad I went with the AV-30's--they are darn near perfect for my needs. Any audio stream you throw at them sounds incredible, whether it be music, video, or anything else. The sound is smooth, the bass is more than enough even without a subwoofer, and they are very easy to listen to for prolonged periods of time. Piano sounds especially nice. Vocals are incredible, though a touch too much low-mid for my tastes, but it makes Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet sound amazing. And you've never heard announcer Ted Williams, "The Golden Voice of Love" until you've heard him on M-Audo!
But most importantly, the sound is very accurate. Again, a bit too much low-midrange and mid-bass, but I have to admit it does add some richness to speakers that one would think would be very tinny sounding because of the small 3" woofer. But these don't sound tinny at all, but full, rich, and smooth.
When you first pull these out of the box and set them up, they are a bit muffled sounding, treble is somewhat weak. Like any good quality audio product, they will need break-in time, so it's best to give them a few weeks of constant use before judging them. They will sound better and better every day.
The magnetic shielding, though extremely common now-a-days, is very welcome on these speakers, as my right speaker is snuggled up between my iMac and a 2 TB external drive, but not causing any problems what-so-ever.
If anyone can find better speakers than these at such a low price (without having to resort to a subwoofer), please let me know...as I can't find anything better than these little guys.
I would also HIGHLY RECOMMEND these or the AV-40's as external speakers for iPod like devices, or any small audio device. Just connect connect a standard 1/8" male/male cord between the iPod and the Aux In on the speakers, and prepare to be AMAZED. A far better value than those fancier docking solutions that cost a lot more and deliver a lot less.
Highly recommended.

I use these as desktop monitors about once per week for background music at work.
The sound was great, and I was quite happy with my purchase. I actually bought another set for my garage at home.
After about a year or so, the left speaker stopped working. After reading the M-Audio community forums, this appears to be quite common with no real support from M-Audio.

I use these on mobile carts with LCD projectors and Blu ray players. They sounded great with plenty of volume for the meeting rooms they were used in. Unfortunately of the five pair purchased only one made it past 18 months of use. Four out of the five pair all had amp failure.

M-Audio speakers are a professional quality product and the sound is astounding. For the price it's the best deal you could get. This is the second pair, I have bought a pair for me before, this one is for my daughter's birthday. Great service from B&H, they were sent the next day and I got them in few days.

Comments about M-Audio AV 30 Active 2-Way Desktop Monitor Speakers (Pair):
Bought these monitors as part of my home video/photo editing PC workstation. I have purchased the AV30 & AV40's in the past for my church's editing workstations. The AV30 delivers excellent audio in a small footprint. The price was also a factor for my purchase. The Aux in/phones jack in the front is ideal for plugging in iPods, etc to listen to music while working. No problems or cons.

Comments about M-Audio AV 30 Active 2-Way Desktop Monitor Speakers (Pair):
I purchased this product having previously used a long line of m-audio items (usb recording interfaces, headphones, keyboards, larger ministers such as the bx8a and bx5a.)
In search for a home entertainment system for my girlfriend, it occurred to me that while many units with passive speaker boxes had some of the features I wanted for her but severely lacked in other areas. This unit in combination with a small Rolls RCA mixer make for a perfect solution for movies, device connection and turntable output.
I would highly recommend this product for the audiophile with limited space and a valued album collection.
I would give this product 5 stars if it were geared more toward small studio applications as the title suggests however, in a pinch or getting started with audio engineering, these will work.

The good: They sound great.
The bad: I've had two pair of these and both pair burnt out after a year or two. I think it may be an overheating problem, so make sure to turn off when not in use.

I recently purchased this speakers for mixing at home and they work perfectly. They give a nice crisped sound like no other, But for a little more bass i recommend a sub. So far I wouldn't choose nothing else but the M-Audio AV 30's and you wouldn't either...

as a music fanatic and college student, i successfully found speakers that have a nice crisp sound with a decent balance between bass and treble as well as a convenient size for my small college dorm. i am very happy with the sound quality; crisp, clear, and a small bass bang that adds great ambiance to any college party as well as good quality music for people just looking to listen to their music at home. It goes pretty loud as well, and have had a couple of complaints about it at my dorm :S haha

Hooked these speakers up to a tiny preamp unit with internal volume control I purchased from another source to use on my laptop at home. Get tons of distortion free bass and precise mid range with this setup. Not much treble, but that's just fine. Used a short RCA cord I had on hand even though a couple of nice 3.5 mm plug to RCA cord conversions were provided. The installation was a "piece of cake", even though I did check the instructions afterward to make sure I got it right.
