The Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives from Newer Technology is an extremely convenient way to access data on a SATA internal drive without having to install that drive into your computer. The Voyager Q can hold drives of either the 2.5" or 3.5" form factor that are no greater than 4TB in capacity and that are of any SATA standard, whether that's SATA 1.5Gbps, SATA 3Gbps, or SATA 6Gbps. Within those criteria, this dock supports hard drives and solid state drives.

For connecting the dock to your computer, you have a bounty of interfaces. The dock features a super-fast USB 3.0 port, one eSATA port, two FireWire 800 ports, and one FireWire 400 port. With the USB 3.0 interface, you can transfer data at a blazing maximum rate of 5Gbps. Plus, that interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1 connections. With all of these ports, you can connect the dock to your Mac or Windows computer and let the data flow!

Supports all SATA 1.5Gbps, 3Gbps, or 6Gbps drives that have a form factor of either 2.5" or 3.5" and that are no greater than 4.0TB in capacity. That means, you can connect hard disk drives (HDD) or solid state drives (SSD) to the dock
This dock features a "Quad Interface" that allows you to transfer data at super-fast rates. The four interfaces also give you enough flexibility to connect with a variety of computer systems
The dock supports a maximum data transfer rate of up to 5.0Gbps or 500MB/s via its fastest interface, USB 3.0
The push button drive eject button allows you to safely remove the drive
The dock includes a hinged flap for 3.5" drive access
Hot-Swap functionality allows you to quickly access multiple SATA drives by switching them in and out
The weighted base and non-skid rubber feet offer stable operation
The dock features a two color status LED. When the left side is blue, it indicates that the dock is powered on; when the right side is flashing red, it indicates "Disk Activity"
The dock features a compact design
The dock is whisper quiet to operate and does not require a cooling fan
The dock is plug-and-play with Mac and Windows computers via the USB or FireWire interfaces. Use of the eSATA interface requires a system reboot in order to recognize drive
All interface connection cables are included
The dock features a limited one-year warranty

I personally think this is one of the best back-up solutions for a photographer. I have 2 of these docks daisy-chained to my iMac via FW800, and I use Carbon Copy Cloner to continually back-up my RAW images. Being hot-swapable, one can pop out a drive and pop-in another drive, clone it and keep a copy of a hard drive at a friend's in case of a break-in, fire or flood. Also, if one of the drives becomes damaged or full, you just purchase another internal hard drive, and no need to get rid of the enclosure or have to try and open the enclosure of the typical external drives on the market. This is also a much cheaper solution, and you can choose WHICH brand of hard drive, speed and size you want and need.

My only complaint (minor) is that this dock look and feel a little cheap, and they could have made them more aesthtically pleasing.

Bought 1, then 2 more. Seemed like a good product. First one failed a few months after purchase. Then the other 2 did. After that, I've been returning them to the manufacturer. After owning 8 of them, I can assure you that if you use the Firewire 800 port, connected to a Mac, for any extended period of time, this unit will fail. By "fail", I mean that one day it just won't appear on your desktop. If you're unlucky enough to have it become intermittent before it fails completely, you'll probably lose some data. I lost an entire drive. After numerous returns, the manufacturer has issued me a credit statement for 1/3 of my cost. They're deducting a hefty restocking fee and charging for missing cables.

Great for connecting unused SATA drives and SSDs for log and capture. However, this product lacks a thunderbolt post and is therefor not the best option for use with the new Mac Pro

Purchased in 2012 from B&H. As have many users (check online) this unit failed completely after minimal use. Will not read drives (yes tested several that mounted using other SATA connectors) even though LED lights. Expensive paper weight. Excellent concept, very poor quality.

I am a systems Manager in a small firm. We backup our files to bare drives with docks for off-site storage & rotation. We have almost 4 million files to keep backed up. We had to move to 3&4 TB drives and then realized that if they are formatted on one computer, a different computer (same OS) sees the drive as blank. These docks (I bought 3) solved that problem. Worked perfectly out of the box and they are fast, using eSATA, FireWire 400 & 800 as well as USB3. We use esata & firewire so we can save our USB3 ports for less adaptable devices. I will be getting another one to carry with my Laptop which has an eSATA port.

It's a pricy product for being a piece of plastic that moves data around, but when your business, or art depends on uploading detailed, massive-sized imagery, this is worth every penny. I am a Blackmagic Production Camera 4K user, and I started out using a DIFFERENT dinky little SATA to USB 3.0 and it was slow, would crash often, and when it didn't crash, it would drop numerous frames randomly. The Voyager Q is pretty much the opposite of that. Uploads RAW and Prores files flawlessly fast, and more importantly, without dropping frames. Also, the interface is nice, with red and blue LED indicators that let you know if everything is A-ok, and the eject button is a small but valuable feature. Lastly, I haven't Overall worth the buy for any BM user (or any SSD video shooter) out there!

Worked sporadically then failed. Save your money and buy cheaper versions.

I was using a harness until this purchase, I really like the clean form factor and ease of accessibility of this unit.

These work great UNTIL you walk across the room and touch the drive with any level of static charge... then they are done. So set up a static free environment and you'll be fine... Company replaces, yes, but you're out a dock for several days. I talked to tech support and supposedly they are working on this issue... I have 4 other docks by 2 different companies that are still working after 4 years... and plenty of static.

Used to transfer SSD info to my computer.

I've got an older computer so i can't use this to it's fullest capability, but it works fine and it gets the job done.

It also came with a variety of cables, which is useful.
