The Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives from Newer Technology is an extremely convenient way to access data on a SATA internal drive without having to install that drive into your computer. The Voyager Q can hold drives of either the 2.5" or 3.5" form factor that are no greater than 4TB in capacity and that are of any SATA standard, whether that's SATA 1.5Gbps, SATA 3Gbps, or SATA 6Gbps. Within those criteria, this dock supports hard drives and solid state drives.
For connecting the dock to your computer, you have a bounty of interfaces. The dock features a super-fast USB 3.0 port, one eSATA port, two FireWire 800 ports, and one FireWire 400 port. With the USB 3.0 interface, you can transfer data at a blazing maximum rate of 5Gbps. Plus, that interface is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 or 1.1 connections. With all of these ports, you can connect the dock to your Mac or Windows computer and let the data flow!

I personally think this is one of the best back-up solutions for a photographer. I have 2 of these docks daisy-chained to my iMac via FW800, and I use Carbon Copy Cloner to continually back-up my RAW images. Being hot-swapable, one can pop out a drive and pop-in another drive, clone it and keep a copy of a hard drive at a friend's in case of a break-in, fire or flood. Also, if one of the drives becomes damaged or full, you just purchase another internal hard drive, and no need to get rid of the enclosure or have to try and open the enclosure of the typical external drives on the market. This is also a much cheaper solution, and you can choose WHICH brand of hard drive, speed and size you want and need.
My only complaint (minor) is that this dock look and feel a little cheap, and they could have made them more aesthtically pleasing.

Bought 1, then 2 more. Seemed like a good product. First one failed a few months after purchase. Then the other 2 did. After that, I've been returning them to the manufacturer. After owning 8 of them, I can assure you that if you use the Firewire 800 port, connected to a Mac, for any extended period of time, this unit will fail. By "fail", I mean that one day it just won't appear on your desktop. If you're unlucky enough to have it become intermittent before it fails completely, you'll probably lose some data. I lost an entire drive. After numerous returns, the manufacturer has issued me a credit statement for 1/3 of my cost. They're deducting a hefty restocking fee and charging for missing cables.

Easy. Just plugged it in and it worked. Bonus, it came with all of it's own connection cables: FIrewire, esata, etc. That is a huge value!

Just got a Blackmagic Cinema Camera and needed a method to import the files from SSD into my array on my Mac Pro.
The Voyager Dock provided SATA connectivity. I was thrilled with the speed of the files transfer. Highly recommended

I've been buying externals for years and have found that as long as you're able to maintain a clean environment for the internal drives this is a much more cost effective way of managing storage.

I purchased this hard drive dock and the first one was faulty. It wouldn't power up after the 2nd or 3rd time I used it. B&H was great about exchanging it and so far the 2nd one is working just fine. I'm hoping it was just a fluke. I love the multiple connection types to work with!

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
Ordered 2 because of other poor reviews I had read online. Got product in.
Lasted less than 12 hours before 1 of the 2 became unresponsive. Drives not accessible via Firewire, or USB. Sent the one back for a refund.
Must be on for passthru to work on Firewire, so best to have at the end of the chain.
Not hot-swapable, be very careful not to have the unit powered up when swapping drives, this is what I believe cause the first unit to become non-responsive. I have been much more careful with the second unit to not hot-swap, and this one remains working.
I believe that the unit is manufactured with inexpensive parts and therefore unreliable. I do not trust anything on the unit for backup purposes and use only for temporary working space. Keep backups elsewhere.
I wish another company made a more sturdy and reliable commercial version of this unit.

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
Bought 3, they all failed. Was able to exchange only 2, because I couldn't find the receipt for the 3rd. Within a month, the 2 replacements have failed. They power up, but the FW800 connection doesn't seem to work. It just stops working. I'm using them with an iMac, for editing with Final Cut. I'll try to return these 2 duds, but if the replacements fail, I'm going to stop, because each time I return, I have to pay postage. This is the worst product I've ever purchased from B&H, in 20 years.

Comments about Newer Technology Voyager Q Quad Interface Dock for 2.5" and 3.5" Serial ATA Drives:
I purchased this product specifically because it was described as bootable from the drive inserted. Well, it does not. The icon of the drive shows and it looks like you'll be able to boot from it, but then it doesn't. I have tried with several drives so I know the problem doesn't come from a drive but from this product.
I have tried USB3, Firewire800 and Firewire400 and neither of them worked for that purpose.
Since I have read that it is actually common that it doesn't boot.

I use this as part of a rotating backup scheme. It's connected to my Guardian Maximus as a third drive which I switch out once a week or so. Haven't had any issues to date.
