Once AAA battery was in and on the Kr, I took it outside and O-GPS1 showed '3D' mode quickly. ie Latitude Longitude Altitude of location.
'Precise calibration' for Astrotracer is a little strange; you don't know which axis (of 3) requires more turning if unsuccessful the first attempt - but I get there after repeating all 3 axes. (sometimes several goes were needed)
Using the Astrotracer is a bit tricky; I was left wondering were some blurry pics caused by (1) camera shake (2) poor focus (3) cloud/haze (4) Astrotracer error?
But some good long exposures were obtained; 1 to 30secs worked well for wide starry sky vistas, up to several minutes for individual plannets using extreme magnifications; 20X normal or more.
'Compass' is accurate enough for most tasks - like finding sun rise, moon rise, etc.
'Simple navigation', no maps - like a car GPS - limits use but still it works fine.
Best function, IMHO, is the photo tagging of lat long alt. Wondering "Where did I take THAT!" is avoided.
    Price/performance ratio is very good;
    good bang-for-buck.
    Overall a great unit.

I bought this unit for my Pentax K-5 so that when on trips, I could identify the places my pictures were taken. This Pentax module fills that need. It accurately gives the coordinates in the exif data embedded in every picture.

However, it shows the data in degrees and minutes. Most software today (including Google Earth) needs the data in decimal degrees - for example "33.2456 degrees." In order to convert to the more common format, the minutes have to be divided by 60. This is a pain, and the GPS software badly needs to be altered to give the user a choice of degrees & minutes OR decimal degrees.

The owner's manual says that every time the unit is turned off and removed from the camera, it must be recalibrated. This is a complex process involving selecting a menu item and then rotating the camera in 3 different planes. It takes about a minute, and if done without using a neck strap, subjects the camera to the danger of dropping. I'm told by other users this procedure is needed only to insure that the data regarding the direction in which the camera was pointed is accurate, not the GPS location coordinates. This could be clearer.

The manual is written in Japanese first - it should be a no-brainer to insure that units sent to English-speaking countries should be written in English first. Also, the manual could be more clearly written. I had to try four times to calibrate the unit right after receiving it; the manual failed to say that the "OK" button had to be pressed after selecting the calibration menu item before calibration would "take." Also, reference to colors on the LEDs on the unit was confusing - the manual reference to colors was in fact not the LEDs but the icons in the camera's display. A much better job could be done here.

Still, the unit works as intended and would be a useful accessory for giving a history of where pictures were taken. As a parting shot, it's pretty expensive - I think the retail price is excessive.

not that I know where to point my camera but I am very impressed with the exposure times I am getting with the 200mm kit lens....30~60 seconds depending which portion of the sky and how much I crop the picture (trailing becomes evident on heavy crops.....astrotracer is why I got this as I cannot afford an equatorial mount nor do I have to lug around that extra gear and spend an hour setting up...I visit a lot of different sites which is part of my adventure...i get set up in minutes!!!! calibration is simple and may take a time or 2 to get it done....it is a little pricey but i'm glad I got it......all the gps info shows up just fine on sony's play memories....my k-50 has the option of turning off the blue light at night....it does work but occasionally comes back on but that's after letting it sit too long without takin a picture

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

The K-3 does not support the Pentax GPS' simple navigation that existed in the K-5 (stated in K-3 manual, destination manager option gone from menu). Some K-5 users had complained that the LED on the GPS was too bright during astrophotography, there is now a K-3 menu option to turn the LEDs off in astrotracer mode.Turning on the compass is easier (press info button twice, to select what is displayed on rear LCD).Flash while using the O-GPS1: Several web pages discuss how to use cables to connect external flash with the hotshoe mounted GPS, using cables. With the K3 supporting manual power control of the popup flash, using fill flash is a bit easier (still using the Pentax hot shoe adapter "FG" with 5 pin cable and F adapter to GPS mounted on flash bracket).

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

The hotshoe attachment is straightforward and secure, plus this maintains weatherseals. It does mean you can't use a flash while using the GPS unless you mount and trigger remotely. That's the only star deduction I give it. Calibration is easy enough, and the manual is pretty good - giving instructions clearly.

The astrotrack function should be interesting to use, I have seen some stunning results online.

Seems to be quite accurate for a GPS. Sure, you could get that with your smartphone but it's nice to not use those batteries for extended trips. As for the astrotracer (the reason I got it).... well, let's just say the unit also seems to be a highly effective rainmaker. I suspect I'll have to wait for the summer months to find out how well it really works.

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

I use this with my K-5 for geotagging with a sister company of Google Earth, which lands my pictures in Google Earth when they get approved—sorry no coordinate format issues here. This unit works unbelievably well if you read the manual thoroughly and use it accordingly. I love the matching weather resistant attributes for what I do. It's important to note that the GPS should be left on the camera and just switch the camera on and off when you're not using it on a geotagging shoot, especially after you do a simple calibration of the unit to enable 3D tagging. This mode uses 4 satellites as opposed to the 2D mode, which only uses 3. This makes the unit much more accurate using this technique. Personally, I prefer the this kind of GPS unit in its external form, mounted atop of the camera. There are times when I don't want to have my D-BG4 grip or my external microphone on my camera just like my GPS. Perhaps if they could incorporate the GPS into the body—that would be a cool option, but I'm sure that would increase the size and price of the camera and not everyone needs this luxury to shoot portrait shots. Bottom line; awesome product and works without any issues that you otherwise would still have with a regular GPS reciever.

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

I have it attached to a K5 and have just returned from an extensive trip in the rural areas of Australia. It worked extremely well and was most useful in providing me data as to where my photographs were taken. I found it very easy to set up and calibrate and worked every time as long as you remember to hit the ok button at the end of the calibration. I had it turned on most of the time over a fortnight so i used about 3 batteries. It pays to carry spares with you (AAA). If you have been under cover (in a building or dense overhead cover) for a period give it a few seconds to get a reading once you come out. Does not require recalibration unless you have removed it from the camera or have had to change the battery.

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

I bought this to have automatic geotagging in picasa, and this module works well for that purpose.

It's well built, although I wish the K5 had a GPS built into it, since the module is fairly bulky sitting on top of the camera. I never use it for its astrotracing ability, and probably never will. For geotagging only, its a pricy accessory - but I'm sure it will pay for itself a year from now when I can go back and look where EVERY photo I've ever taken was from. So although Geosetter and an old GPS is a lower cost solution, it's a complicated one I rarely bothered to set up. The O-GPS1 module works for my purposes.

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

I am a rail travel writer and photograph from the train. The O-GPS1 has made my job a lot easier -- no longer must I jot down notes about where a shot was taken. The unit, when held against a train window in open country, picks up sufficient satellites within 40 seconds. In a city with tall buildings or in the mountains with beetling cliffs all around, the unit won't pick up so easily but retains locking surprisingly well. It is a great time-saver.

Once one has calibrated the camera a few times it becomes very easy.

                  It's good, but not perfect.

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

Comments about Pentax O-GPS1 GPS Module:

I have used the unit as a GPS and for astrophotography. Unit works as advertised. Menu's required to control the GPS and access its functions are alittle cumbersome. I'm hoping Pentax addresses this in a firmware update.
