The X-Rite i1Display Pro is a calibration and profiling system for a display / projector. It helps to make sure that the colors on your display match those in your original picture or file. The i1Display features i1Profiler software for calibrating and profiling all modern display and projector technologies, including LED and Wide Gamut LCDs. It's also spectrally calibrated, which makes it field-upgradeable to support future display technologies!

The system's ergonomic design incorporates 3 functions - ambient light measurement, monitor profiling, and projector profiling - into a very sleek, compact and fully integrated device with no parts to misplace. Experience speeds up to 5X faster than previous devices! A custom-designed RGB filter set provides accurate color measurements, while the optical design allows for high repetition on the same display and across different display types for more consistent color matching. There's even a rotating diffuser arm that can be used as a stand for table top projector profiling, ambient light measurement, or as a cover for instrument optics. The conveniently integrated tripod mount is great for projector profiling in larger venues.

The i1Display offers both 'Basic' and 'Advanced' modes, giving you the power to choose which one is best for you. Basic mode offers a wizard-driven interface with predefined options for the quickest path to professional on-screen color. Advanced mode offers user-defined options for more sophisticated profiling workflows, to deliver the highest quality color results on monitors and projectors, as well as display testing and quality assurance tools.

Enjoy virtually infinite control of white point, luminance, contrast ratio, gamma and more, as well as multiple monitor and workgroup profiling. Intelligent Iterative Profiling is an adaptive technology that measures and analyzes the color capabilities of each unique display for increased profile accuracy. Create unique patch sets for optimal results in your profiling. Ambient Light Measurement automatically determines the optimum display luminance for comparing prints to your display, based on a measurement of the lighting conditions where the prints will be viewed. Ambient Light Smart Control performs measurement, compensation and ongoing monitoring of ambient lighting conditions, letting you decide whether you want the i1Display system to automatically adjust your profile or simply notify you as ambient light conditions change.

Flare Correct measures and adjusts your display profile for reduced contrast ratios caused by flare light (or glare) falling on the surface of your display. By accurately measuring your effective display contrast ratio, you'll have a more precise display profile. 3 patch set sizes - small, medium, or large - allow you to increase your profile accuracy by measuring a higher number of patches. Choose your own combination of patch set size, extracted colors from specific images and/or PANTONE spot colors selected from the included PANTONE Color Manager software. The Automatic Display Control (ADC) technology automates the adjustment of your display's hardware, including brightness/backlight, contrast, and color temperature, in order to speed up the profiling process and eliminate manual adjustments--so there's less work for you!

You can re-use profile settings on multiple displays connected to the same computer or to multiple computers within a workgroup. Before and after images show instant results, and the handy profile reminder lets you know when it's time to re-profile your display. Easy-to-follow on-screen help guides and videos mean there are no extra manuals needed.

When it comes to display quality assurance, this system can perform visual validation using pre-defined and user defined images. It can also do measurement-based validation in 3 different ways: Using industry standard targets and reference data sets (like SWOP, Gracol and Fogra), using PANTONE color and libraries, or using colors extracted from user defined images. You can also take advantage of user defined PASS/FAIL deltaE tolerance for average and maximum values. Additionally, the i1Display Pro features color accuracy trending over time. For a display uniformity test, measure white point and luminance uniformity over 9 locations on your display, and take control with user defined PASS/FAIL tolerance.

    How I Use It.
I am an avid photographer and do my photo editing on a decent monitor (Asus PA248Q). But any monitor requires periodic adjustments to help ensure that prints match their on-screen display. A device like the i1Display Pro performs electronic monitor adjustments for white brightness and color temperature, and creates a software profile that precisely calibrates all colors. I need this device for longterm color accuracy.

    Usage and Results
The i1D Pro is physically easy to use. The device rests on the screen face with its permanently-attached cable draped over the top of the monitor. The other end of the cable plugs into a USB port. A counter-weight on the cable ensures that the device stays put. It takes about ten minutes to do a calibration. Doing this minor chore once a month is all that is needed to maintain a monitor in calibration, based on my experience.

In "Advanced" mode, my peference, the included software was confusing at first. (In "Basic" Mode several features are not available, and the calibrations cannot be as good.) For example, at one point the software instructed me to set the device in the "Ambient Measurement" mode, even though I had previously elected to not measure ambient light. Fortunately, the software issues are not major. I overcame them by viewing X-Rite's web videos, and utilizing the company's excellent telephone support on two occasions. Kudos to X-Rite for providing easy access to knowledgeable humans!

After a few practice runs I was able to get excellent calibrations. I set my target white color-temperature to 5500K and brightness to 110 cd/m2. For my first trials, I had chosen to let the i1 make all monitor adjustments automatically. That yielded good white point accuracy, but poor luminosity (95 vs. the 110 cd/m2 setpoint). On advice from X-Rite, I then elected "manual" brightness adjustment, where the user adjusts monitor brightness to match an on-screen pointer and target. Those calibrations were excellent in both luminosity and white-point color.

Color accuracy depends on how many color samples you choose as match points for developing the profile. The more the better, but the longer the process will take. X-Rite offers three built-in choices, ranging from 118 to 462 colors. There is also facility for the user to employ other sources of sample colors.

I tried the smallest sample set first with poor success. Black and white photographs showed color tints where there should have been none. The 462-color set fixed that very well. Using that, I could not detect any tinting in my black and white images. A tougher test, a 32-step black-to-white test pattern, revealed some grey shades with extremely faint tints of unidentifiable color--not actually color -- more of a very slightly warm or cool grey. Not likely to ever be a problem.

Using X-Rite's "Quality" tool, I measured the variation of standard colors from ideal. The results were excellent with a ΔE of 2.6, meaning the displayed colors were very close to what they should be. This was borne out by a few sets of eyeballs, whose owners concluded there was excellent agreement between my calibrated monitor and profiled printer (Epson 3880) output.

    Comparison with the Predecessor
I previously owned an i1Display 2, made obsolete by the advent of LED monitors. The current package, the i1Display Pro, works far better than the old one. It has more capabilities, including a Display Uniformity tool, and the already mentioned Quality function. It also calibrates projectors, according to the company. It's a worthwhile upgrade even if you are not using an LED monitor.

    Niggles
    • X-Rite should quietly lean over the shoulders of a few novices using the i1Display Pro software for the first time. It would help them get the interface in the next version right.

    • I wish the screen-contact padding on the device head were thicker.

    • The i1Display Pro includes the ability to measure ambient light and make adjustments to the monitor calibration accordingly on the fly. Honestly, this seems like a photo editor's nightmare, and so remains turned off in my instrument. (To be fair, it might be useful for watching videos or similar, but I think it is mostly gimmick.)

    • At the price I expected some kind of protective storage case or bag. One is needed.

    • The instrument looks and feels flimsy. It's "plasticky" and very lightweight. Hopefully, it will not prove fragile.

    • My kit shipped with version 1.1 software. Current version is 1.5. Save yourself a do-over by installing the latest version from the web, instead of an older version from the disk.

    Summary
This is a wonderfully useful tool! If you are motivated to spend the coin on this device, you'll probbaly put in the effort to learn to use it, and be rewarded with a color accurate display and excellent agreement between display and prints. But, if you expect an effortless experience from the start, better look for other solutions.

I didn't find this easy to use, unfortunately. I installed the software and connected the device to my computer as per the instructions, but the application refused to recognise the device and kept saying it was not connected - even though it was. There were little red question marks next to the notice that the device was not connected, and at various other places on the screen, but clicking on them didn't provide any information and nor was there any other clue in the instructions or elsewhere as to what might be wrong. The calibration could not proceed and it was very frustrating!!

I tried using different USB ports (all of which work fine for other gadgets), logging off and on and starting again from scratch - all no use. It was exasperating to think I may have to go through the hassle of packing up the device and all its accompaniments, explaining the problem and posting them back to the other side of the world. I just don't have time for this sort of &*^%$!!

I went online to find the Xrite website, and after reading the relevant help section I tried selecting a device option different to the default one on the calibration application home screen. I thought this should finally work, but no. Another suggested step on the help screen was to download the latest software, so I tried this but even then it wasn't entirely clear which was the correct choice for this particular device and my iMac so I took a guess from the list of options.

Finally after installing the software and selecting the non-default device option in the application the calibration process could begin. By this time though I was exasperated and fed up - these things really should be designed and properly tested with end users in mind so as not to waste people's time!

As for results, it dimmed my screen down quite a lot from its previous setting but apart from that I haven't noticed any major difference in the way Lightroom displays my photos. I haven't had any printed since calibrating my screen, but hopefully the results will be better than if I hadn't taken the trouble to buy and use this thing.

If I had to start from scratch again I'd definitely try a different brand and hope that installing and using it on my machine would be an easier process, with properly thought through prompts and clear suggestions about what to do if there are any hitches.

        Comments about X-Rite i1Display Pro:

I downloaded the software from the X-Rite website, installed the software (and restarted my machine), and with just a little trouble finding the app (titled i1Profiler.app), was able to open the program and perform a simple calibration on my Dell 2005FPW. I also tried to calibrate my iPhone 5 through the X-Rite app, and that worked successfully as well. I have not tested my devices against any prints, but the new monitor profile appears to have done about the same corrections that I have performed manually in the past.

Works great for calibrating monitors! I have a 24" AS PA248Q and a cheap Acer 23" monitor. It was driving me nuts as they looked completely different. After a quick install and running the x-rite on both displays, I have matching colors now.. awesome..

I've read many articles on monitor calibration that suggest calibrating your monitor is absolutely necessary for proper color and to insure that your photo adjustments are true. I also read many good things about this product mostly from the B & H review section and other on line places. I thought I had done the necessary homework on this subject and purchased this product. I guess I must just be an idiot, because I bought the product and don't understand what it is supposed to do and after several attempts I wouldn't be able to tell you whether my monitor is calibrated or not. Are my prints better, no they look terrible. do my photos look different on my monitor, yes, they look terrible. Does the product work? yes, I guess so. is it user error? probably. The instructions were pretty poor, but maybe that's my inexperience. Not sure where to go from here. After reading the reviews from other B & H reviewers, I thought the differences were going to be spectacular, but I can't see a thing. I think the product is functional, but I guess I don't know how to use it yet and need to spend more time understanding what my expectations should be.

Followed the basic directions from X-Rite and the calibrated color profile looked amazing in photoshop. but unfortunately the calibrated profile didn't work with Windows Photo Viewer as it made images look darker and heavily saturated.

I had to look online for guides that required an advanced setup and change from ICC profile v4 to v2 and re-calibrated for it.

I use the i1 Display Pro to calibrate my monitor. I have been using a ColorMunki Photo. In using the ColorMunki, I was noticing that prints were consistently warmer than what I was seeing on my screen. After calibrating with the i1Display, my screen instantly became slightly warmer. I believe that the i1Display is a more sophisticated monitor calibrator. It definitely uses more color swatches.

The i1Display Pro unit is easy to mount on the screen and small enough for convenience for testing. With the unit you can automatically check the ambient (room) light on a continuing basis and if there is a significant change it will create a new profile. In addition to profiling your monitor, the software can also create profiles for projector, printer, and scanner. I recently heard that it might also profile an iPad. You will have to check into that yourself. The software has 2 modes; basic and advance. Monitor calibration is a new area for me to learn so I watched the training videos. The Basic mode is easy enough but I think the interface could be improved slightly. I still don't have a grasp on all the capabilities it offers with the advanced mode. I have yet to understand how within the software I can change what ICC profile I want to use, so I can go back to an older profile. Perhaps that has to be done within the windows color management. The profile comparison does not seem to work for me. At least the way I understand the instructions. Nor do I understand how to use what is call patches, or the X-Rite passport. Which is something I hope to do in the future. Initially I was confused that my Windows Photo Viewer program was showing images too dark. But I found on the internet that this unit creates a new ICC v4 profile and the Windows Photo Viewer only can use ICC v2 profiles. So I am trying a new photo viewer program such as Irfanview. I suspect that is also the situation for most modern monitor calibrators. For simple calibration of a monitor the basic mode seem to work quite well. You would probably use the advanced mode if you worked in a print lab or an environment where you have to create profies for special commercial product photographs or were doing unique post process editing. I will say that my monitor does seem to be darker than I am use to. And that concerns me. I have run several profiles and it pretty much stays the same. Given enough time I will figure out if that is ok or if I will need to tweak things. Using the software does have a learning curve. With improvements in the interface that could be reduced. For me the final test of the X-Rite iDisplay Pro & iProfiler is how well the pictures look when they are printed.

What I was told by the manufacturer:

With a MAC it works at the system level.

For a PC it only works on a program by program basis. I was told that Adobe programs like Photoshop work, but Microsoft Office products don't.

Somewhat tricky to use and the screens aren't clear about when and how to save.

Not super sure its actually doing anything. I had assumed (probably naively) that it would result in some profiles that I would have to tell win7 to use, but i guess it updates the graphics card directly. Hard to really know if it did much, or not. Still, it was fairly easy to use, and quick. I'm not an expert on color profiles of course -- but I was starting to get concerned about RAW processing on an uncalibrated monitor. i decided to grab this one when it went on sale.

This was my first serious attempt at calibrating my monitor for photo editing. i1Display Pro made it very easy to do. The differences were not extreme, but enough that I am getting a better perspective on my edits now. I followed their video tutorial and redid my calibration using the advanced and more detailed methods and it changed things even a bit more from the "simple" method. It is easy to use and makes me feel that doing it frequently is not a laborious task.

I had to upgrade to a new calibration device because I got a new laptop. I bought the Spyder4Pro. No matter what I did, the screen was GLOWING when it came to greens. Luckily, my macbook pro was really, really close to my prints, so I took it back to factory settings. Jump forward a few months and I decide that my 40-year old eyes need a bigger screen, so I invested in a wide gamut external monitor. Out of the box, it needed to be calibrated, it was quite green. The Spyder did a terrible job on it, now matter how much I tinkered with it (and with SUPER great instructions that I found from the calibration guru). With his suggestion, I got rid of it and bought the x-rite. Following the guru's instructions left it a hair green... but when I tweaked it with his instructions (if first time wasn't perfect)... it got my monitor spot on!!! I think I almost cried tears of joy!!!! So, I'm not saying it's perfect to plug in and go... there might be some tweaking. BUT... you have the ability to, whereas I didn't have as much before.

I couldn't see a noticeable difference between screen and print after calibration, but there was a significant difference before. This seems to be a good solution for photographers, but I'm not sure about graphic design purposes.

I traded in my legacy Spyder 3 Pro for this one and immediately noticed the difference in calibration time. i1Display Pro was much faster. Also my monitor also support hardware calibration and it only takes i1Display Pro as the input device. The only problem preventing me from getting the i1Display Pro was its list price. With the rebate and trad-in offer, I paid 180 for it and I think it is a fair price. Also, unless you have two monitors of the same model, don't expect the i1Display Pro to help to match up the colors between monitors.

I did initially have some issues, where it was not recognizing my sysytem but after going to the website and uploading all the required files it worked like a charm.

                                                Comments about X-Rite i1Display Pro:

The i1Display Pro by X-Rite is a wonderful product that has improved the process of color calibration enormously. I used it to calibrate our iMac and Macbook Pro Retina with a little time spent on customization.
There are a few options to tweak, but mostly it concerns when you want it to alert you and whether you want it to stay plugged in to sense the ambient light levels. The product is expensive, but my wife is a photographer and it is important to us to deliver photos that are of a guaranteed quality.

                                                Comments about X-Rite i1Display Pro:

I'm fairly new to higher-end photography, but have jumped in with both feet (and sometimes feel a bit over my head). Color management is one of those areas that I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. So, as a newbie, the user interface and skimpy instructions with this product has left me with a little "am I doing this right?" queasiness.

That said, I've used it on my Dell laptop screen, two Dell monitors on my desktop, and my iPad. The Dell monitors are fairly new and higher end, and the profiles created made little appreciable difference. The laptop and iPad are a different story. Rendering on those are much changed. Since I am an adventure traveler and do a fair bit of editing on the road during my trips, it will be great to know that the images I'm posting along the way are a bit truer and that I won't be re-editing them for printing when I get home.

So, 5 stars for a device that works, but drop a star for less than adequate documentation and tutorials for the beginner.

The i1 seems to work fine. I found the software a little confusing after having used the Spyder products for many years. Also, if you are on Mac OS X 10.9+ you'll have to get a specific upgrade from their website. That too me some time to figure out as it wasn't clear from the get go.
